Mario Kart 64 and Contra III may be a sign that the worst of the Virtual Console is behind us.

After last Monday's one-hit wonder, Nintendo comes out swinging again with a wonderful racing game from the N64 era. With promises of more Nintendo hits coming soon (Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country), have we seen the last of the cruddy release weeks?

Nintendo isn't the only company to bring their games to Virtual Console, of course. Today, Konami hits us with one of the games in the Contra series, and Sega makes up for last week's no-show by releasing two of the three games that were supposed to show up then.

Find out what we have planned for our seven-day celebration of the GameCube.

With the Wii currently experiencing a slight dip in new releases, it's the perfect time for us to set the record straight for a little game console that goes by the name of Nintendo GameCube. Its five year history had many ups, downs, twists and turns; so many, in fact, that it's going to take us a whole week to pay our respects to our fallen brother.

Since the GameCube was always all about the games, it should follow that this week be all about them, too. So, all week long we'll be taking a look back at the best GameCube games ever created with a feature appropriately entitled Nintendo World Report's Greatest GameCube Games. Every day this week at 12:00 Noon PT, we'll unveil a group of games that we consider to be the must-owns of the GameCube generation, along with some other stuff thrown in there for good measure. By this Friday, you'll know which GC games you absolutely, positively need to play. (If you haven't played them yet, shame on you. If you have, pull out your Wii and play them again!)

Several anticipated games have shown up on the ESRB ratings website.

Games often show up on the ESRB website before they are officially announced. With Virtual Console titles being rated, we can get a glimpse at upcoming titles. Not all games rated by the ESRB see releases, however. For example, the Bit Generations games were rated but never materialized in the US. Additionally, many Virtual Console titles have popped up on the site only to be removed later.

One upcoming Genesis game, Comix Zone, is listed with an E rating and was recently revealed by Nintendo Power. One NES game, Mighty Bomb Jack by Tecmo also has an E rating and is scheduled for release in Japan.

Mario's last hurrah on GameCube is now coming out in April -- for Wii.

Fans have been rabid for Super Paper Mario ever since it sneaked into Nintendo's press materials at E3 2006. The game is a new Mario platformer with 2.5D gameplay using the same flat paper style as the Paper Mario RPGs.

Though originally planned for GameCube, the title disappeared from release lists toward the end of 2006, and all signs pointed to it being ported over to Wii. Now, the April issue of Nintendo's official magazine, Nintendo Power, says the game will indeed debut on Wii in April 2007.
