The next Skylanders game lets you trap and then play as the villains, including the vile Kaos.

The next Skylanders game, called Skylanders Trap Team, lets you play as the villains in addition to the heroes, adding more than 50 new characters.

Developed by series creators Toys for Bob and due out on Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and Wii on October 5, Trap Team is focused on the heroes called the Trap Masters. These characters have weapons made of traptanium that deal more damage and can be used to trap villains. Using Traps, which are empty plastic toys, players can capture any boss they face and then play as that boss in game. The Trap toy becomes that villain, using all of the abilities they had when you fought them. Activision's presentation on the game early today highlighted Kaos, Chomp Mage, Chill Bill, and Shreadnaught as bosses you could play as.

60 new Skylanders will be added, including Snap Shot, one of the Trap Masters. He is a blue lizard who uses arrows, a sword, and a water vortex.

For those interested in the Skylanders mythos, Trap Team begins with series villain Kaos unleashing all of Skylands' most wanted villains. In the process, he also wakes up the Trapmasters.

Like other sequels in the series, Trap Team will support all of the previous Skylanders figures.

Toys for Bob will be the main creative lead for the upcoming games working on the Wii version, but developer Beemox will also assist in some versions as well, creating the original 3DS version and the up-ported Wii U version.

Interesting that it's still coming to the Wii. I guess the Wii version of Swap Force still sold well enough, though I wonder how many stores will still have the Wii in October.

The bad thing is, the Wii version was sooooo buggy... and they've given that same company so much more to work with on this game. :(

Sad to see that n-Space isn't doing the 3DS version. :(

I'm out.  None of the games after the first set has really hooked my family and frankly that's just way to much money.

This is the first Skylanders game I feel nothing for. I enjoyed all of the three previous ones, but I just don't think I care much about this idea.

From a marketing/business perspective, I think Trap Team is a mistake. I'm super keyed in to this world and I don't really grasp how exactly it works. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think this is where Skylanders crashes. If Disney Infinity can't take advantage of this, the "toys-to-life" market will crash and burn. And Disney Infinity is going to have Marvel characters, so yea, Skylanders is boned.
