We got a look at Wind Waker HD, but a sneak peek of Link's newest outing could have happened.

Nintendo had considered bringing Wii U's next Zelda game to E3 this year according to Shigeru Miyamoto while talking with Game Informer.

The idea of showing the game, which Miyamoto claims is further along in development than many thought, at E3 this year was being tossed around by Nintendo.

Miyamoto said "We're also working on a new Wii U Zelda game. Work on that is progressing fairly concretely. In fact, we were thinking about showing it here at E3 but decided to wait just a little bit longer before sharing it with everyone."

Although the game won't be shown this week, we can probably look forward to hearing about it in the near future.

My guess is that they will wait until after Wind Waker HD releases before showing it, so as to not take attention away from it.

Could the speedy development mean they're using skyward swords engine?

Everybody expects Zelda games to show up at three E3s anyway, why not stick it in there to be something new to excite people?

Isn't this how Pikmin 3 was announced way, way back?  Nintendo had a lukewarm E3 and quickly panicked and threw us another bone.

"Oh geez, they're not responding well to the Direct."
"Shit!  Tell them we could have shown Zelda!  That will put out the fire!"

They better not.  The Zelda demo with big spider was gorgeous and I'm not putting up with some upscaled Wii game after THAT.

Well, I can see why Nintendo decided to hold the game. It might actually make people want to buy Wii Us. Yeah, I get that Nintendo would be concerned about confusion with Wind Waker, but at this point, their only bastion of support is from the hardest of the hardcore: the people who would know the difference. I don't see what they would have lost throwing us a bone by showing an exciting first look at the game.

I'm pretty sure each new game is a modified version of the previous one's engine, though if you're saying that it'll have motion sword movement again, I'm all for that.

Engine =/= graphics

Even if Miyamoto says development is going smoothly, the 3D Zelda games always end up taking longer then Nintendo expects them to.  Wouldn't be surprised if it's still pretty early in development and they know there's a good chance it might not come out until Fall 2015 or even later.

A missed opportunity. It would have been okay to throw a tease for a far-off game at E3.

VahneJune 11, 2013

Perhaps they'll show it at the next Direct in a few months.

I expect Nintendo to release another Nintendo Direct in 3 weeks or so with new details on some other games much like they did last year after E3. They seem to have a new plan of how they want to disseminate information and I just have a feeling this may happen and they hold some things back in case they feel they need to make a further showing and keep the fanbase happy since it seems to have worked in the past to smooth out such ruffled feathers. So, not really surprised by this news and I think it explains why some other games were left missing as well such as Yarn Yoshi.

I agree.  For better or worse, it's pretty obvious that Nintendo is trying to decouple themselves from the large E3 event and instead focus on a number of smaller presentations throughout the year.

AdrockJune 12, 2013

I prefer that approach since we gets updates several times a year.

I'm glad Nintendo held off on the new Zelda. I don't need to hear about another game I won't play this year. I don't want to know anything about the game until Nintendo is sure it'll be released as scheduled.

not many people do there research there was a brand new engine built for zelda u that tech demo is a old engine. the new zelda will show the wii us true power.

Pixelated PixiesSeptember 21, 2013

Wow! It just happened!

I just realised that I don't care about Zelda anymore. When the hell did that happen?!

This realisation has kind of bummed me out guys.

nickmitchSeptember 21, 2013

Well, Nintendo's emphasis was on games coming "soon" or at least soon-ish, IIRC. So, this all makes sense. Still makes me wonder exactly how far along the new Zelda is. Also makes me think about what's Nintendo's strategy. Could the idea have been to push Mario 3D World to the Wii U this year because Zelda has to be the game? Was Zelda ready for the world, but not good enough yet?

What Nibblesnarf bumped this?!

You know im going to get A Link Between Worlds and what ever comes out for the Wii u but I too am feeling a bit indifferent with Zelda. Pokemon constantly reels me in and its changed far less over the years than Zelda. Funny how that works?

You know what though? I felt that way about 3D Land and Galaxy 2 thinking I was about to play the most basic of sequels and was absolutely blown away by the final products.

In the mean time Pikmin 3 and the W101 have been providing endless entertainment. So maybe when Zelda U comes out i'll be ready for that type of experience.

ThePermSeptember 23, 2013

maybe if nintend okept everybody excited then third parties would be excited and if third parties would be excited then we would get games.

but nintendo logic is...release dates...3rd parties can't compete with us...

of course they compete with rockstar no questions asked.
