Wii Sales Cross 10 Million Mark in Japan

The little white box has tightened its grip on the Japanese market.

Nintendo has sold their ten millionth Wii in Japan, according to Enterbrain (via Kotaku). The Famitsu publisher has released figures showing that Wii sales in the territory standing at 10,009,736. The system has been on store shelves for 170 weeks..

In comparison, the PlayStation 2 reached the same mark in only 131 weeks. However, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 lag far behind, sitting at 4,766,408 and 1,235,049 consoles sold respectively.

At their recent Media Summit, Nintendo announced that 76 Wii games have sold more than 1,000,000 units globally, 54 of which are third-party titles.

Too be fair, the PS2 faced a lot less competition in its first few years. There was the Dreamcast and the remnants of the N64 market, but that's about it. The PS2 was basically in a competitionless vacuum so it could have explosive growth with nothing to stand in its way, and when the xbox/gc came out several years later the PS2 had already gained too much ground to be beaten.

The Wii was actually the last console on the market for this generation, so it had competition right from the beginning. I think that might make its success all the more impressive, because the PS2's success was like taking candy from a baby that hadn't even been born.

Times change though, if you look at sales most of Japan is on the move, so the handhelds gaming is huge.  Even the PSP is still alive and kicking over there.



Quite tellingly, it's the DS that is at or has surpassed the PS2's LTD install base in Japan.
