The Blue Bomber returns to his roots.

The latest issue of Nintendo Power has revealed that Mega Man is headed to WiiWare with a new iteration to the mainline series. It has been over eleven years since Mega Man 8 released on both the Sega Saturn and PlayStation, though the Blue Bomber and his accompanying characters have continued to stay relevant through a number of spin-off titles and re-releases.

Mega Man 9 will feature a graphical style similar to the NES titles of the past and will be entirely in 2D. Currently the details on the game are thin, but it is confirmed that the game will feature the first female robot master ever, Splash Woman. Along with Splash Woman, Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, and Tornado Man have been confirmed as robot masters.

No release date has been announced for Mega Man 9 at this time. We'll bring you more details as they develop.

I'm torn.  On one hand, I hate to see this equal opportunity garbage.  On the other, the idea of beating up a woman greatly excites me.

I think that may very well be my favorite part of all of this.

What do you expect from two Gamecubes taped together?

SKEET SKEET SKEET

Hey, question for you Mega-philes. When I pop Mega Man Anniversary Collection (or X Collection) into my Wii, it gets to the main game's internal menus just fine, but when I start one of the actual games, the screen goes black. I can hear the sound--I know the game is playing, but I can't see anything. Could this be caused by my component cables?

Halberd, did you try every game on the collection. For me theres like a 5 second black screen then everything loads up correctly.

Yeah but you watch women get beat up, you usually don't do it yourself. Anyway great to see a woman MM boss robot!

I'm all for the NES graphics.  It should be pretty awesome...

But wouldn't it be cool if they let you change the graphics to whatever gen you felt like?  I'm sure that won't be possible with the WiiWare size limit, but it's a cool thought.

"Splash Woman, Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, and Tornado Man"

What kind of sick depraved sex cult is this?

Magma (hot goo) Man
Galaxy (R. Jeremy as Mario) Man
Jewel (family-) Man
Concrete (gets hard) Man
Hornet (passionate stinger) Man
Plug (butt-) Man
Tornado (special whirling willy techniques) Man
SPLASH WOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you have a female robot master anyway?  They're robots.  They have no gender.  I find it irritating only in that it breaks with the traditional naming scheme.  Blah blah blah MAN just rolls off the tongue.  I love the idea of using NES graphics.  I was afraid we would get 2.5D or cell-shading or something equally gross.

I'm really surprised it has taken this long to come up with Tornado Man.  They came up with Pharaoh Man and Cloud Man before deciding on Tornados?

Magma Man sound like someone with a speech impediment mangling "Mega Man".  Just say "Mega Man vs. Magma Man" three times fast.

Great news. This is what Wiiware is for.

Well, to be fair, Air Man from Mega Man 2 shot out tornadoes.

NOT AS AMAZING AS CAPCOM'S RESIDENT EVIL 3D FIGHTER EXCLUSIVELY FOR Wii

TanookisuitJune 26, 2008

This is EXACTLY what I wanted out of WiiWare.  I would kill for an 8-bit style Mario side scroller as well.  YEs yes yes!

coming to wiiware this xmas: OLD Super Mario Bros 4

nickmitchJune 26, 2008

Is this news America? Because FUCK YEAH!

I just hope that the game features non-8 bit music.  Not because I think they had bad music in the old games, those games have good music.  However, if people were satisfied with the 8-bit versions of those songs we wouldn't have OC Remix.

GoldenPhoenixJune 26, 2008

I am kind of disapointed that the game has 8 bit graphics. It seems too restrictive.

Um, they had a girl robot in the old MM games, I forgot her name. Also Transformers got along fine with having female robots. Blackarachnia and Night Bird are two of the most popular female characters in the series not to mention Arcee. Oh and this game looks awesome guys so yeah.

Not so much the component cables if you can see the menu, but your LCD TV not understanding 240-line resolution.

The game MAY look 8-bit, but is NOT running on an 8-bit system. What I am saying is that while the game may look 8-bit since its running on an next gen console we could be seeing some mind blowing stuff using the classic style. Think of it as the NES being on super potent steroids.

I'm thinking something like Four Swords Adventures was on the GCN.  It really has the SNES feel, but has several effects that couldn't be done on the SNES...

You are probably right, but it would be hilarious (and sad) if it had 8-Bit only visuals combined with some of the slowdown found in the 8-Bit MM games. :)

I know they want to evoke memories of the early Mega Man games (2 to be specific).  However, 16-bit graphics could allow for a lot more artistic flourishes.

I've never played any of the 8,000 Mega Man games ever. I would buy one immediately if it came to the VC, but only Europe has gotten them so far. Even without having played them, I realize how huge this is and how big a win this is for Nintendo in hyping the WiiWare service.

TanookisuitJune 27, 2008

I think developers could thrive under the restrictions of what was possible on the NES.  My favorite Wii game- Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros 2.

MarioAllStarJune 27, 2008

Well the NES-style graphics (and probably sound) will make production quicker and keep costs down, which will result in higher profits. Keep in mind that this is sort of a risky release--it is tough to gauge the interest in a series whose core lineage has been done for over a decade. I think if MM9 is profitable enough, it will encourage Capcom (and other companies) to invest higher funds into these type of game revitalizations.

I personally love older technology (I was just cleaning up an Apple IIc earlier today and trying to find a compatible power supply) and find vintage gaming to have a special charm. I'm sure many game developers feel the same way, and this project will certainly be fun for them to work on.

I'm all for flash drive game saves, though.

I thought it would be totally retro with 8-bit style music. I wouldnt mind some non 8-bit versions in the game (like menus for instance) but the levels MUST have 8-bit music to me. Besides, if they tunes are good in 8-bit the great people behind OCRemixes have some new-older stuff to re-invent!

The remixes of the older stuff is the best they have, why would i want to hear remixed music of something from like GC era and up?

The interview in NP says it will have 8 bit style music.  Like the graphics, I think they can do things within that style that the original hardware couldn't actually do.  The simplest example would be not dropping instruments from the music to play sound effects, but they could also have more sound channels and fewer limitations on those channels.

8-bit was awesome.  After that they kiddified him and all the characters or give him the super Big Bobble Head ACTION...

I am sorry Golden Phoenix, I read your post but it wasn't clear you were replying to that, I forgot her name so I thought you were mentioning something about the tornado gun cuz you quoted that part of his post also.

KDR_11kJune 28, 2008

I wonder how much they'll really obey the 8bit restrictions. The Homestar Runner website has plenty of games that emulate an 8bit style but aren't entirely there since they add stuff like gradients and colors that weren't part of any 16 color pallette.

TanookisuitJune 28, 2008

The screens we've seen already look like they're pushing more colors at once than the NES games.  It's not showy, but there' more variation.
