As a fond farewell to 2011, the whole original Famicast crew of JC, Danny and Matt team up with Japan gaming aficionado 'NintenDaan' Koopman for an epic 3-hour Famicast!

First off is a taste of a traditional Japanese Christmas, listen and learn exactly how Santa AKA 'Annual Gift Man' enters the houses of Japanese children, despite the lack of chimneys.

New business covers all the big games you'd expect, plus Danny earns his middle name by spilling the beans on his latest eShop endevour, Sakura Samurai.

Daan gives the details on the lastest Taiko drum game, a Wii game that no one outside of Japan will be playing, despite the enticing commercials it has.

In Japan news, that Miyamoto thing, the Circle Pad Pro and the 3DS system update all get a look in - just how many new hats and puzzle pieces do the guys have already?

Moving into the final hour of the podcast, JC tries to emulate TYP with his version of Radio Trivia, a segment that was planned as a backup for the live Telethon hour but was never used - until now!

Wrapping up, all remaining listener mail from the previous show is answered, topics include Animal Crossing, the future of Metroid, dual audio tracks and real live Tanukis!

Surprisingly, onsens are barely mentioned at all!

As always please send us interesting questions in preparation for the next show in the new year to famicast@nintendoworldreport.com

We'd like to apologise for the less-than-great quality of Matt Walker's audio track. A lot of time was put into improving it as best we could, and we will strive to make improvements for the next episode. We sincerely hope it doesn't affect your enjoyment of the show.

Just started listening to this ep now!!!! 3HRS  ;D ;D Nice!

Can you tell me where you guys get the Intro music from? Really like it!

Happy Xmas and New Years to ya's!!!!!!

CericDecember 20, 2011

Well I super failed the 8-bit quiz.

noname2200December 20, 2011

Glad to have Matt back on board! Thanks for the epic-length podcast everyone: I know that must have been draining to go through, but the content was especially amazing this time around. I never knew about the link between Japan and KFC...

As for the music quiz segment, I liked it a lot, especially with the twist, but I think I'd prefer if the tracks were all revealed shortly after we hear them, since by the time they're revealed (on the next show?) I'll have forgotten all the ones I didn't get! The fact that I usually have to listen several days after the podcast airs, and thus can't compete, certainly has nothing to do with this at all. >_>

P.S. Love the episode title too. I can't be the only one who thinks Annual Gift Man belongs in Mega Man 11.

I wouldn't worry about the music quiz, I'd say if you entered now, you'd have a good chance of winning... :-)

Really?  Darn. The only one I knew was the final song - couldn't even guess about the others, although I rather enjoyed the segment.  (Edit: Actually, rather enjoyed the entire show... the music bits were just one of many highlights.)

Question for you guys: my wife (who doesn't speak a lick of Japanese) swore to me that the FreakyForms voices are simple Japanese phrases and that sound options mainly just adjust the pitch/frequency. Is she right, or is it just gibberish?

Question about the limited demos: Can you backup your SD card data, play the game 30 times, and then restore the data and play another 30 times?

It would be funny if purple pieces only originate from Nintendo employees and have to virally spread from them. The only ones I've gotten have come from StreetPassing NOA employees, though they didn't have complete sets either.

Daan, SpotPass ghosts are updated based on your own time trial records (it seems like one cup per day). You can go back and race them anytime by selecting 7 Ghosts from the individual track in time trial mode after it disappears from the Channel menu.

RE: Music Quiz answers.
We still don't have a winner, so I will reveal the answers the first week of 2012 either way.

Mario Kart ghosts in 7 don't seem to be as well implemented as Mkart Wii.
I liked how you could view ghosts without having to race against them, that way you could see what techniques the Pros were using.
Also what's the deal with StreetPass ghosts offering Grand Prix races? Why would I want to go through an entire GP with some random guy's Mii? Weird.
I've S'Passed a few people now, it is fun racing against them in TT mode, I've yet to challenge any online though.
I see the option, but it is always greyed out, maybe they have to be online at that time?

As for purple puzzle pieces, I have almost all of them now, they seem to be getting more common with each passing week.
I still have all the non-purple pieces to get though!

CericDecember 29, 2011

I'm going to compile my answers and give that a re-listen.

noname2200December 29, 2011

I've relistened twice, and even if I'm 100% accurate I only get five points. :(

The answers to my question was well worth the wait. Looks like a good portion of the savings was made industrially, but setting those air conditioners to 30c meant they were effectively off which no doubt saved a lot of power seeing how modest the residential power saving goals were. I am not sure right now, but I think that TV in Ikebukuro ran on LEDs, so the power drain would have been relatively small given the size of the screen, but then the whole thing is a similar excise to an "Everything is ok alarm". Mind you, when ever I was there I never paid any attention to that screen. I was either passing through or getting drunk.

Radio Music trivia is driving me up the wall. I got 5 points easy and a 6th if I hunt down the track to confirm, but the remaining 3 tracks is just taunting me. the first I know isn't just game music, but I just can't place it. The middle is a game I more than likely haven't played before, but it has generic RPG stylings. The last escapes me and comes off a little too mangled getting chip tuned. You gave it a away a little too much with the second track, time period and the tie in?!

Oh well, at this rate I guess it will jackpot.

EDIT: Mankini, pics or it didn't happen.

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)January 06, 2012

OK you guys have had a LONG time to answer and no one can beat Daan's modest score, so lets call it a rollover to the next episode (whenever that may be!)

ANSWERS PEOPLE:

1- Portal - Still Alive

2- Robocop theme

3- Super Mario Galaxy 1 - Melty Molten Galaxy

4- The Legend of Zelda Majoras Mask - Clock tower Theme

5- Mario Kart DS - Waluigi Pinball

6-Eminem - Lose Yourself

Let the facepalming begin!  ;D

oohhboyHong Hang Ho, Staff AlumnusJanuary 06, 2012

*Facepalm completed*

1. No wonder it felt so close. Played that game over a year ago, but since it had became such an obnoxious Meme, I tend to filter it out like a perception field in Doctor Who.

2. Laser guided.

3. Never played it and the general epicness of the soundtrack gets lost in translation, platformers just dont' normally have a soundtrack that orchestral.

4. Pin pointing the exact track would have been the hard part, but the melancholy gave away that it was Majoras Mask.

5. Unmistakeable.

6. Ok, who listens to Eminem anymore unless your doing it ironically.

Oh well, that was amusing, nothing to get into a time machine over.

CericJanuary 06, 2012

I actually think I got 4 of those. 2 and 4 I know I didn't get.

noname2200January 06, 2012

1, 3, and 4 were correct, the rest I was completely clueless on. Right now I feel bad about myself. Which admittedly is how I felt before reading the list, and will after, but...

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)January 12, 2012

OK if we do that again, I'll try and make it a bit easier!

By the way, have you joined the FC MarioKart7 communities yet?
I'm on pretty much every (Japan) night!

The pre-pre-planning stages of FC-8 are in pre-pre-thinking-about-it stages, and if things work out, it could be pretty cool and unique podcast.
That's all I'll say about that anyway!  :-X

Fatty The HuttJanuary 12, 2012

Great, great episode. Thanks guys.
The Japan Christmas discussion was amazing.
Annual Gift Man removing his shoes and announcing himself: this image will stay with me for all time.
And KFC, who knew, right?
