Nintendo World Report (finally) honors 2007's best games.

Every year there's a game that everybody sees and says "man, that would be great on..." There's likely going to be a lot of games people think would be great on the Wii in the future. 2007 had one title that really seemed as if it were designed for the Wii.

Non-Wii Game We'd Most Like to See on the Wii

The NWR Award

Portal

When it was first announced, Portal was billed as a First Person Shooter without the shooting. It evolved from a student project at DigiPen University. The title forces the player to "think laterally" in order to solve a series of puzzles by using the "Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device." These puzzles are solved by moving the player, or some other object, from A to B by having the player shoot portals onto flat surfaces. The creative puzzle layout, strong physics interaction, and great design make Portal a science test worth taking over and over.

Because the title was built with a version of Valve's Source Engine, a Wii port probably wouldn't suffer much of a graphical downgrade. The Source Engine is already a few years old, having been designed for Half-Life 2. Since the original Xbox was capable of playing a version of Half Life 2, the Wii should be up to the task of running a modified version of the Source Engine.

However, the real reason why Portal would be great on the Wii has nothing to do with the graphical capabilities of Source. Despite its reputation as a "puzzle" game, Portal is still an FPS. The Wii Remote is custom-made for FPS games. The ability to manually aim where the portal should go would make Portal an even more immersive experience. Besides, a non-violent (albeit somewhat disturbing) FPS could be a good fit with the younger-skewing Wii audience.

Portal is a fantastic game that would be a great fit for Wii. The console has the horsepower to run the engine, and the control scheme to really make the game a blast. Portal's creative design and fantastic environment make it an immersive title, and the addition of Wii controls could really put it over the top. That is why Portal wins our award for "Non-Wii Game We'd Most Like to See on the Wii" for 2007.
