2007 NWR Awards

Biggest Disappointment

Nintendo World Report (finally) honors 2007's best games.

Every industry has its ups and downs, and sometimes the downs hurt so much. 2007 had more than a few moments that hurt so bad.

Biggest Disappointment

The NWR Award

Brawl Delayed to 2008

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has been leaving Nintendo fans salivating since its first trailer, released way back at E3 2005. Solid Snake AND opera music in Brawl? Utterly delightful. The excitement surrounding Nintendo taking their ultimate fan service title online was palpable. For a full year that excitement was stoked every night by the methodical updates to the official Smash Bros. Dojo website. With every "megaton" announcement the wait became more and more agonizing. When Brawl's release was confirmed as being delayed to 2008, Nintendo fans across the Internet wept openly. For that reason the delay is unquestionably our biggest disappointment of 2007.

Runner-up: Lack of quality in 3rd party support

So 2007 has come and gone... and we're still waiting. Oh sure, we got a slew of PS2 ports, we got some multi-platform titles, but what do third parties really have to be proud of on the Wii? There were several notable titles from third parties, but no actual breakout hits.

Nintendo fans wanted to see ambitious third party titles. They wanted to see traditional games that offered a flavor different from Nintendo's own titles. They wanted to feel like they owned the dominant console, and have that fact reflected in visible advertising campaigns and a certainty that they would be able to play Rock Band on the Wii now, not sometime in the foreseeable future.

There were several significant announcements in 2007 of future third-party support, but 2007 was a year of carrot-on-a-stick. It's unsettling to not know if 2008 will be a repeat performance.
