Best Virtual Console Game: Other Console

by James Jones - March 7, 2008, 12:22 am EST

Nintendo World Report (finally) honors 2007's best games.

The Virtual Console doesn't just give Nintendo fans the ability to replay childhood favorites. It also gives them the chance to play the titles those poor misguided Sega fanboys raved about on playgrounds all over America. The Virtual Console also lets people play games from the TurboGrafx-16, which many are still convinced didn't actually exist.

Here's our call for the best Virtual Console games on Non-Nintendo Systems.

Best Virtual Console Game: Other Console

The NWR Award

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Call us old-fashioned, but we're suckers for this classic Sonic game. While the original introduced Sega's blue mascot to the world, it was its sequel that really defined the essence of a good Sonic game: fast pacing, branched level design, awesome tunes, and Super Sonic. Sure, a few of Sonic 2's spiked pits are a bit cruel, but many of 2007's better VC releases have similar quirks. And while some fans might argue that the next entry is better, Sonic 3 cannot be crowned king without its MIA expansion pack, Sonic & Knuckles. Not even Sonic's recent handheld exploits can hold a candle to this classic 2D adventure. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remains thoroughly enjoyable, three generations later.

Runner-up: Streets of Rage 2

There was a lot of good non-Nintendo console VC material. The 1993 entry into the Streets of Rage series, Streets of Rage 2, beat its way into our hearts. One of the most polished beat-em-ups, Streets of Rage 2 is widely regarded as the highpoint of the franchise. New characters, new modes, and refined gameplay took the already fun Streets of Rage and made it phenomenal. Despite the winning formula, Streets of Rage 2 just couldn't "beat" out Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
