2007 NWR Awards

Best Use of Wii Controller

Nintendo World Report (finally) honors 2007's best games.

More than a few games have had their use of Wii's unique control scheme described as "waggle." However, when developers put real thought into how their game will use the Wii Remote it can be a thing of beauty.

Best Use of Wii Controller

The NWR Award

WarioWare: Smooth Moves

WarioWare: Smooth Moves instructs you as to how to hold the Wii Remote depending on the current micro-game. A voiceover and illustration outline grips such as “The Telephone” and “The Key”. These are incorporated into gameplay by having the player perform actions such as placing the Wii Remote in front of them and picking it up when it “rings”, or turning the controller in a circle to open a door. Grip styles change depending on which micro-game is presented, and grips must often be changed in an instant, creating a great multiplayer party atmosphere. Smooth Moves experiments with more ways to use the Wii Remote than any Wii title to date, and it still presents ideas that have yet to be fully explored. For its sheer creativity in Wii control, WarioWare: Smooth Moves wins our award for "Best Use of Wii Controller" for 2007.

Runner-up: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Translating the button-heavy control scheme of Metroid Prime to the simplistic Wii Remote might have seemed like a challenge, but Retro once again managed to raise the bar. Looking around with the Remote while moving with the Nunchuk may seem basic, but in practice it’s revolutionary. This control scheme tops even mouse-and-keyboard setups, ladies and germs. Using the Grapple Beam never felt as good as it does when mapped to the motion-sensing Nunchuk. The control scheme in Corruption, thanks to the unique qualities of the Wii Remote, could not have turned out better. Its level of immersion is largely unparalleled.
