Proving you're a man has nothing to do with it. I find that I don't over drink when I drink it straight. Unlike most people, I don't go out to drink or to get hammered; I go out to socialize. And when I reach the peak where I can socialize and articulate the best, having straight liquor in a glass to sip on plateaus that peak. In other words, it helps me catch a buzz and coast.
Oh i see. Its the opposite for me, because I'd rather have some mixed drink that no ones ever heard of (conversation starter) and sip on that because :
a. depending on the type of mixed drink I'm having, its MUCH cheaper to have the ONE mixed drink to get/start the buzz than it is to have several straight drinks.*
b. I'd rather spend my money on something I'd enjoy; ie I'm secure enough with my sexuality to order up a "fruity" drink (as one would say it in the derogatory sense) and not something that someone else would order to look tough, because i don't need my throat to be on fire when I'm out trying to have fun.
c. did i mention its more social? girls flock to a crazy looking drink and just HAVE to ask whats in it, and eventually taste it. When they say it doesn't even taste alcoholic, you've got yourself a new friend for the night

I hate mixing liquor, especially with sweet sugary stuff. That's just asking for a headache and a hangover.
probably because you're having too much of it? I know I've mentioned this before on the forums but here it goes again:
a sweet sugary drink will get you drunk quicker than drinking something straight, because of the sugar. according to my teachers in the bartending course i took, drinking from a straw seems to get it done EVEN quicker but i don't like straws so i can't say.
Anyway, unless your local bartenders are ripping you off, you get the same amount of alcohol in a mixed drink as you do if you ask for it straight so whatever the balance is, you're not diluting the effects of the alcohol just the flavor.
As someone who just recently turned 21 who has plans to go out Friday night I feel like I should be taking notes on this thread.
Congrats! PM me if you have any questions
