I would not be surprised if they are already working on a Sixaxis controller with rumble. Actually, I expect it. Maybe a rumble'd version will be out for Xmas this year - who knows how long it takes to put back something that got pulled from initial development?

I have always felt that Sony is basically gambling this generation on Blu-ray.  Anyone have any idea how that's going? I've heard a couple of interesting tidbits...Blu-ray is supposedly outselling HD-DVD quite handily right now, and I guess Casino Royale was in the top 10 video sales in it's week...achieving sales records that took DVD a year or two, supposedly.

Outselling HD-DVD doesn't mean much on its own, maybe there were only 25 HD-DVD units sold last month.  The Casino Royale thing is more interesting: on the one hand, you could argue that it only sold so well because of the early PS3 adopters.  On the other hand, you could argue that PS3 promoting Blu-ray sales is exactly what Sony wanted.  At the end of the day, the big question is whether or not this will translate into success for the Blu-ray format as a whole.  If so, PS3 could stage a comeback eventually.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Last time I saw a report on the Blu Ray vs HDDVD, all the Blu Ray #'s were skewed cause PS3 games were being sold on the Disc.  You also have to remember that they gave away Casino Royale away for free with PS3's in Europe, and I'm pretty sure that those copies made thier way into that final sales figures and thats why they can't really be believed.

But Either way, BRD is releasing more movies than HDDVD since they have far more support for the moment, and I only see it not really mattering once WB's dual format disc hit the market and mpore studios just suppord the dual format disc, that will soon be playing in Toshiba's(?) dual format players.
Personally I hope both formats fail and make room for HVD since its far superior to either "next-gen" format and we would never need another disc format again.

The problem with the whole Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war is that no one cares and even if one format wins over the other it doesn't mean its going to be this big thing. Its a losing battle. All this format war is going to do is show the world who gets to be the next laserdisc.

PC gaming is already heading this way - I can certainly see consoles going this way as it allows developers to reduce publishing fees and increase profit margins. Look at the XBLA and VC and then tell me the concept cannot be implemented well. There's no concern here about "losing" the game as you can go and re-download the games that you purchased.

And people's attachment to the physical media indicates that people are stuck in the past, where something tangible was associated with the transaction. It will probably take time to convince the masses of the benefits of digital distribution, but it has the potential to make games cheaper for the user and improve the bottom line of developers.

I agree the winner of this new format war isn't going to be Blu-Ray or HD-DVD its going to be digital distribution.

The people who want a HD physical media are not in the same group who want (or even care about) Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
The group of people who are interested in HD movies are the same group who are excited and accepting digital distribution.

I would be more then willing to bet that if you were to look at how well AppleTV/iTunes and XboxLive Media is doing you would see that their movies are vastly outselling that of both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray put together.

Digital Distribution is the future, people who fear it most likely have no plans to part ways with their DVDs anyway.

I did a little research:

iTunes: 1.3 million feature-length films (Sept. 12, 2006 to Jan 10, 2007)
HD-DVD: 650,000 (March 31, 2006 to March 9, 2007)
Blu-Ray: 675,000 (March 3, 2003 to March 9, 2007)

Are those Blu-ray and HD-DVD numbers for units or movies sold during that period?

Also, the time frame for each medium is very different. Almost skewed, if you will. Perhaps they're lifetime sales, perhaps not. In either case I want more background information :P

The first date is when the format launched.
iTunes first started selling Movies on Sept. 12, 2006.

The second date is when the # of movies sold was published. I was able to find both the total # sold for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD on the same site. iTunes I got from Apple.

That I'm aware of the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are for just movies. The info came from Video Business but it does say "Total disc sales" so it could be including blank discs and Blu-Ray games. =/

Digital distribution definitely seems like the best bet vs. discs.  There is the group that wants something physical, and I fit into that group, but I also admit that the sheer convenience of having 100 movies on a harddrive instead of clogging up my living room sounds great.

That's my opinion, not yours.

I hope it will NEVER come to downloading games.
Call me old fashioned but I like having the disc, box and manual. It's good to have a hard copy.
What if your HDD fails and all of your games are gone?
I really think they should offer both alternatives.

I second that.
Yes, I would live to have all my movies and shows on 1 machine with full surround sound and HD resolution. But iTune doesn't offer that nor any other digital distributor last time I checked.  Also with iTunes the last I checked if where you where storing your music and videos became corrupted your S.O.L.

Thats my biggest problems.  DVD's have a shelf-life of 20-30 years considering the format and some other factors with common use.  Computer hardware stretching it has a max 10 years with common use.  Also they are individual pieces and not a part of a whole.  If I decide that I want to play Justice League Unlimited for 3 months non-stop.  I probably kill my DVD player and the Disc.  I just buy a new DVD player or use a computer and my wife be ready to go to watch My Little Pony.

If it was a computer that would not be the case because they share a disc then they would both be taken out at the same time.  If I'm lucky I have a digital content provider that will let me prove who I am and let me redownload all of my movies and shows.  Though that will take forever because they will be in HD quality with full surround sound (aka HD-DVD/BluRay equivalent.) Which makes for comparatively huge files.

In the future I'll probably be happy to jump onto the bandwagon but as of know no.  I also really doubt that the less technically inclined will fully embrace it either.

Actually if you lose your downloaded iTunes files all you have to do is contact Apple and they will tell you how to get it all back pretty easy. I did it recently since my downloaded music started spanning 4 different computers and I wanted to get them all on my new computer, I called Apple and within 5mins I was re-downloading all my music and videos I had purchased.

XboxLive Arcade allows you to redownload any games or TV shows you have purchased as long as your loged into your account. Which is something I wish Nintendo did with the VC.

I'm not to keen on the idea of doing away with VideoGames on Disc based media, but I do like the idea of doing away with disc based media for Movies and Music.

Umm....does Sony actually want to win this generation?  Sony has forfeited 2 Christmases now in a row.  At least Nintendo is throwning some of its biggest guns out there this Christmas.

And I hate the idea of digital distribution to movies.  Some of us like quality picture and audio...and don't like the idea of huge compression just to be able to send it quickly through a wire to my television.

Sony claims the PS3 will have a 10 year lifespan. If that is true then they are in it for the long haul and I guess they don't mind if it takes them 3-4 years to really get off the ground.

They probably think the 360 (and certainly the Wii) will have a much shorter span, so their initial gains are meaningless.

But then again, Sony is still very arrogant and perhaps still destined for a major fall.

That statement was made under the assumption they would trump this generation like last, and this was their way of convincing early adopters that it was worth the large investment. Sony majorly mispredicted the market, though, and I would be willing to bet money that we don't see support for the PS3 in 2016.

That is an excellent point, I believe they made similar statements about PS2 before it came out, but that was considering that they kicked butt. Sony is struggling alot with PS3, and it could easily have the SHORTEST lifespan of the other two systems if it doesn't pick up.

Destined for a major fall?

Sony has already fell. The PS3 wont be catching up and pretty much is offering absolutely nothing until 2008.

Plenty of time for both Nintendo and MS to scoop up plenty more sales. I'm afraid Sony would need a miracle at this point to regain the number one spot.

Even if the systems life spans were shorter than Sony's PS3, with the way the market share is going it wouldn't matter. If Nintendo keeps strong sales of the Wii going and 4 years from now they release a new system, what system do you think people would most likely get next? An aging PS3 or the next big thing from Nintendo? =)
