Have you heard the news? Sony Settled the lawsuit against them by Immersion.

And since that's what everyone thought was the reason behind no rumble in PS3 controllers... could Sony have a Rumble PS3 controller by Fall '07, just in time for MGS4? They've done such mid lifestyle controller switches before (dual analog) so don't give me this "no one will support it" stuff, Rumble is BACK in Sony's camp.

Also, they're out to steal Nintendo's Miis and Microsoft's Xbox Live Achievements, according to this rumor that was later proved pretty much true.

Sony is basically going to take Nintendo's Mii concept and make them 3D avatars. They're going to take MS' achievement's concept and make them tropies. They're gonna provide their users with a "home" (I imagine they're stealing this from Animal Crossing) where their avatars can decorate the place with their trophies. Sony's out to steal, and steal bigtime.

So what do you guys say... has the giant finally woken up???

Looks like this round of Hell-freezes-over announcements have begun!

It'd be best if SCEA fires Jack Tretton. Or do the right thing and resign. The very least, say he's dumb stupid moron with a #$#@ grin. He owes the gaming community hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of unsold Playstation product. He said that Rumble is so last generation. If it was so last generation, how come Sony and Immersion kissed and made-up? Huh?

I wouldn't be surprised if they introduced Sixaxis with rumble at this year's at e3. And they'll expect the Sony faithful to pony up the cash for it...

Sony should have Sly Cooper as their mascot for obvious reasons. Can someone make an avatar like that? Have Sly with a Sony logo on their forehead?

I called this (time to pay up!).  Almost makes me feel sorry for the people who have the launch controllers.  Almost.

As for the "Mii ripoff."
Think about the target audience this system is going to.  At $600 (the $500 doesn't exist) right now it most certainly isn't average Joe, Jane, her kids, or their grandparents.   Some of the audience might like it, but I can guarantee you this will blow up in their faces from the venom that the majority hardcore gamer group are damn well gonna spew.  It completely goes against the whole "cinematic force" that they are continually playing up right now.  Now I REALLY do have to wonder what's going on over at Sony right now.  For them to do something like this (if true) really has to mean something is terribly wrong over there.

I'm assuming he's being sarcastic about this. But if you read the comments on the Kotaku article Sony fans are going ape crap over this.

If Sony does release a new controller with rumble, they expose themselves as hypocrites because they have made it clear in the past the lack of rumble has nothing to do with Immersion and everything to do with the motion and rumble not working together (yet Nintendo doesn't have a problem.)

And second they will likely piss more people off then make them happy, because Sony could have done this before the launch of the PS3 and reigned in that jerkass who keeps running his mouth at houw rumble is old news.

The Mii/Achievments things just reeks of desperation, why can't Sony ever do anything on their own without having to resort to outright copying?

I really don't like Sony. Here's a short list of ideas they have "borrowed" from others since the PS/N64 generation...

Motion sensing
Achievement points
Console-wide avatars
Analog sticks
Rumble pack

I guess analog sticks can be considered a natural progression of technology, not a radical new direction, but I am trying to make the point that Sony never seems to the driving force of the industry. If anyone would like to point out original ideas from Sony, I would truly like to hear them. The only thing I can think of now is the EyeToy. Even though the Dreamcast did have the Dreameye in Japan, it didn't play any games, making the EyeToy is the best use of a webcam for video games so far.
Thanks for listening.

I do have to say that:

Achievements seem to work.
Miis also seem to work.

Having both sounds like a good idea to me.  Plus in the Kotaku article it was pretty clear rumor wise that they are going to go for more realistic 3D avatars.  Be neat if the expanded this and let people visit others house on the web.

(To answer the next question:  Yes I do sort of wish the Wii had achievements.)

OK, thinking about it, this isn't as bad as I thought it was.

3D avatars have been around way before consoles implemented them and achievements have been around, so Sony doing them isn't that surprising.

HOWEVER, its hard to deny that this is Sony playing follow the leader (or in this case the leaders) instead of trying to do something new that sets them apart. And Sony DOES have the tendency of copying ideas from other companies.

In fact, I see Sony as the poser kid in school. The minute he sees someone with an unique style he will go his way to copy it. Some like him better than the original, others shrug it off.

In all honesty, what annoyed me was Sony's comment that Miis don't work because gamers want 3D realistic avatars. Way to generalize the whole world, Sony!

And finally, Sony is so deep in crap right now cute ideas will not help it now.

Thats ok.  With F-Zero GX I wish I had the stat for how many times it restarted my Cube.

Also, on what Pap said, the devil is in the details.  I'm sort of wait and see on this.  The concept is pretty obvious but, if it comes out to look just like a GamerTag.   That be terrible.  Though if you could have an expansive house with stuff custom arranged.  Maybe even pictures of your achievement it could be quiet cool.

Sony is in a dilemma with the "piis", if they style them like the Miis their users won't be happy with the lack of "next gen", if they style them realistically there is too little room left for interpretation and people will have a hard time making an avatar that they think looks like them (with Miis you make a caricature of yourself which doesn't need to look that close). Either way they lose.

freakyguy666: Has anyone else heard the rumors of a major Sony Online upgrade? Apparently the update will make the Xbox LIVE interface look antiquated in comparison. Apparently the interface is set up like a Virtual Town where each user has their own virtual apartment. Within your apartment you store your collection of acheivements and virtual trophies to show off to any "visitors" (i.e. people on your Friends list). Your friends could visit you if you are "home" (i.e. online)and once inside they could "walk around" your apartment and view how you've decorated your place. But more importantly, they could listen to any music or watch videos that you've got in your place (i.e. content you've stored on your PS3). Furthermore, your friends could join you for a game of cards or other simple games while listening to your music or even running a movie on your virtual TV (again using data on your PS3 HD). Once outside of your apartment you could visit the virtual Movie Theater to download--what else?--video content, visit the virtual Arcade, and other more exciting areas that I'm not at liberty to discuss yet...

The bottomline is that the interface is going to get a major overhaul and it's supposed to be very slick and user friendly. It will make apparent the advantages of the PS3 hardware and--dare I say--the new Sony Online Network.

If this has already been posted I apologise in advance! Otherwise, you heard it here....FIRST!

Update: There's good news and some bad news.

Good news: Beta is up and running...looking fantastic!
Bad news: Release has been pushed back to the Fall.

Feel free to chalk this up as another unsubstantiated rumour...

Quote

"Rumour has it" that part of the delay has to do with the extent of the overhaul required to support such a vibrant online experience.

There is one additional benefit to the delay; Sony is aware of this space and you should feel free to post creative ideas in this space with the knowledge that there is still time to implement them into the final version.

Quote

don't intend to get too technical but here's a hint...the PS3 reserves 96MB for its OS (operating system). The XB360? A mere 32MB. Why does Sony need THREE TIMES the resources?!? Most programmers were perplexed at this decision, but it will all become clear this Fall. One look at the Virtual Town, complete with your Virtual Apartments, with streaming video and music in your apartment for all friends to share and you too will be a believer.

All in the fullness of time!

Cheers!

Quote

The Beta version of the new online interface will be shown behind closed doors at GDC. Sony is very interested in getting 3rd parties on board to one-up the acheivement system of LIVE.

Sounds good. Sounds exactly like what I was hoping Nintendo was gonna do after I found out about Miis and Nintendo wanting to go after a Myspace like setup for online community. If this is indeed what Sony is doing, then I hope it turns out just as good as it sounds.
If your gonna bring it late, then you better bring it better.

So... Sony is basically giving us a Sims Online version of Myspace? Or are they just trying to emulate Second Life, but restrict it to apartments?

Either way, I'll prefer Animal Crossing, I'm sure.

Oh, and it'd probably just be called Play. After all, the word IS in their brand...

I guess we'll see how much of a threat PSMiichievements will turn out to be soon enough. And how soon they're gonna shove rumble out the door too.

Actually... why am I pensive? I should be happy: I used to worry that Sony would die waaay too fast, that MS would wipe the floor with them, and that the resulting scenario would be bad for Nintendo. I've always believed that we need both Sony and MS to be locked in an eternal struggle so that Nintendo doesn't get to the top of anyone's "to kill" list... these events just make Sony more competitive and staves off the inevitable MS complete victory.
