Nah, it's simple! All Sony has to do is to persuade its two other competitors to delay their next-generation consoles another half decade, so that the PS3 doesn't look like an obsolescent train-wreck of a video game console for  half of its projected lifespan.

Once they take that simple little step, everything will fall into place.

Sony has already fell. The PS3 wont be catching up and pretty much is offering absolutely nothing until 2008.

Plenty of time for both Nintendo and MS to scoop up plenty more sales. I'm afraid Sony would need a miracle at this point to regain the number one spot.

Even if the systems life spans were shorter than Sony's PS3, with the way the market share is going it wouldn't matter. If Nintendo keeps strong sales of the Wii going and 4 years from now they release a new system, what system do you think people would most likely get next? An aging PS3 or the next big thing from Nintendo? =)

Last week's sales figures show that the PSP outsold the DS for the first time since like 2005 or something. Plus they've got the rumble problem fixed, and they are likely to drop the price of the PS3 soon.

All of those and more give me reason to believe they could still salvage the PS3. I hope they don't because I don't like the company for how it is dishonest and the way it makes shoddy products and tries to force things on consumers such as rootkits and all that. So I do hope the PS3 fails, but I am just saying that its failure isn't a certainty.

Lol @ UERD =)

@ Chozo Ghost, yeah I mean I think the PS3 is salvageable. It certainly wont go the way of the Dreamcast. But I don't think it's going to the be the market leader this gen if things keep up. Even with all their aces in the hole I don't think it'll make enough of a dent to both Xbox 360 and Wii to make PS3 the winner this gen.

I saw the PSP thing as well, didn't FFVII something-or-other come out this week to increase its sales? Which, if that's true, shows how much selling power FFVII has haha. But yeah anyway, one week of good sales compared to DS' pure domination isn't really a turning point. If it kept up where PSP and PS3 started doubling sales over Nintendo every week then maybe I would be more inclined to think things are changing.

I heard the PSP's success was due primarily to the release of Crisis Core. Sustained momentum will be the key to a comeback. But I agree with you. PS3 has some very anticipated releases coming up. They're not completely out for the count, and they have developer indifference/inertia on their side.

One thing I suspect that Sony's done is to heavily court both Squaresoft and Konami. I have a hunch that both of those companies are going to support Sony heavily with some key projects through the bad times, even though they may give some support as well to the other two consoles.

I mean... Geez... TWO final Fantasy XIII games for the PS3? An FF7 series game for the PS3? And Metal Gear Solid Online?

I always considered "10 year lifespan" to mean they'll keep selling the thing while the next one is out.

That advantage is shortlived though and the more time they waste the more developers will wake up and change their production. Sony's worst case scenario would be a highly anticipated game being released and not selling enough.

I hate to say it but outselling the DS for one freaken week is not what I call a positive trend, now if it continues that for a few months, I'd say yes. But one week? Also do you really believe rumble will really matter that much, every other console has it.

Lol she has a good point.

I doubt people who were on the fence about PS3 or say 360 (or maybe even Wii) would go "Man I couldn't decide before but that rumble controller . . . that's the deal breaker for me. PS3 it is!"

Very good points, but as we see there are developers that will support the PS3 even as it sinks to the bottom of the ocean, stubbornly clinging on to the decks as the ship goes bow-up and begins to disappear. Obviously a certain other game console developer has never had this luxury, and probably never will.

I'm sort of sad the new controller didn't go back to the boomerang design.  Though I will like the extra heft that the rumble will bring back and whats stopping a 3rd party from making a controller using the better Immersion Rumble?  I consider it to be like a steering wheel or dance pad.  Not all games would use it but it's there for the people who would want it.

I think it's very unlikely that Sony will claim the first spot this generation but that doesn't mean it couldn't pull out of it's rut.  The worst thing that could happen is that Nintendo or MS get concieted.  They have a sizeable lead and the bigger they can make it the better chance more developers will jump ship.  No doubt MGS and FF will increase sales and they will be able to wriggle more support from developers.  To see Sony completly fail MGS and FF would have to fail. Why?  Because if MGS fails most people would chalk it up to bad luck and say "At least we have Final Fantasy"

Metal Gear Solid is seriously a niche title that has a hardcore base that most likely already have a PS3, and Final Fantasy won't do a thing once it finally comes out at the end of next year...By then you having Mario, Smash Brothers, WiiFit, Mario Kart, and God knows what else Ninty has planned all out and selling systems, pulling Ninty even farther into the lead...

BTW, does the new Final Fantasy main male character look like a girl, too?

Or is it actually a girl this time?

Surprisingly, I haven't heard much about this game so far.  I don't think I've been excited for a FF game since X.

From this interview:

EGM:  What can you tell us about the heroine of FFXIII?
Motomu Toriyama: We can't tell you all the details, unfortunately. Looking at the history of the FF series, there were already female main characters, like in FFVI, FFX, and FFX-2. This time, one of the characteristics of this heroine is that she's not that feminine. I tried to make her someone very strong, independent. When I asked Mr. Nomura to design this character, I requested someone like a female version of Cloud from FFVII.

Wait... so they purposely choose to make their male characters feminine and female characters masculine?  Is this some sort of subtle political statement? :-P
