TalkBack / Tank Troopers (3DS) Review
« on: February 17, 2017, 04:53:00 AM »

No online is baffling, but Tank Troopers is still a fun 3DS eShop experience.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/44127/tank-troopers-3ds-review

It’s been a while since Nintendo trotted out a brand eShop game, and this time they’re bringing about Tank Troopers, a third-person shooter where you play as a tank. The primary focus of the game is on local multiplayer,  and fortunately Nintendo delivered a fun little experience ready to be enjoyed on 3DS if you can get some friends together.

Tank Troopers has three core modes: Multiplayer, Single Player, and Download Play. The multiplayer mode seems to be the main feature in the game, but luckily it also has a fairly robust and fun single-player campaign composed of 30 missions. Each mission can be played in two modes. One is called Custom Tank, where you can use your own custom tank and characters (or ”Troopers”). The other mode is called Take Orders, where you have to use predetermined tanks and troopers. Taking around five hours to complete all the way through, each set of 30 missions include goals like "Kill X Amount of Enemies" or "Race to the End." A few missions are even reminiscent of Metroid Prime: Federation Force’s Blast Ball mode, as you have to shoot different balls down paths and/or into targets. Difficulty spikes pop up during the missions, especially since you have to complete each mission in a linear order. This forces you to get good at the game, which was actually a welcome surprise. Many of the challenges made me frustrated, but after a few plays, I came away victorious, fully mastering the controls and using the game mechanics to my advantage. This is what turned out to be the best feature of the single-player: teaching you to play and learn all of the controls and nuances. The game also has a great stereoscopic 3D feature that helps you judge distance a little better, very similar to other 3DS games (like developer Vitei’s previous work on the Steel Diver series).

Unfortunately, the campaign offers nothing in the way of a story to really develop the crazy and dynamic characters included in Tank Troopers. You just go from mission to mission, getting graded as you move along. You can replay missions for higher grade, helping to add a fair bit of replayability. Going for the S Rank on all 30 would prove you to be a worthy trooper indeed. Conquering each mission also gives you currency to spend in the Garage on buying Troopers, Tanks, and paint jobs for your tanks, for use in multiplayer and Custom Tank.

The controls in Tank Troopers feel like a great combination of controlling a Landmaster from Star Fox 64 and piloting a mech suit from the aforementioned Metroid Prime: Federation Force. Driving around in your tank feels good, even without having a dual analog setup. While using the Circle Pad to steer, you use the A button to push you forward, and the B button to make you reverse. Also, if you hit up or down on the D-Pad, the tank will hold a continuous movement back or forward, and at any time you can press the X button to bring up a scope that allows you to see further and aim easier. The hook is that when you press the L button the tank goes into Artillery Mode. This limits your movement to forward and backward, but let's you move your turret in 360 degrees. Along with the Artillery Mode, the 3DS gyroscope also lets you fine-tune your shots. This allows the player extra precision in aiming to help hit the enemies while they flee away. When you master this mechanic, you get the feeling that you truly are a real tank trooper, roaming the lands and blasting away other tanks like it's no one's business. (You also have the choice to turn motion controls off and/or invert the camera controls.)

Controlling the tank is frustrating at times, but honestly, I think that it can add to the difficulty and challenge in a very good way. Being in a tank obviously doesn't feel as loose and agile as being on foot, so it makes close combat occasionally awkward. Sometimes the tank controls can feel constricting and difficult when getting into tight skirmishes, but this teaches you that maybe sitting away from the targets has its benefits.

During your tank trooping adventures, you can select various Troopers located on the touch screen that can give you a special boost or power. Each character has a different ability that activates when you touch their picture. The abilities vary from offensive boosts like stronger bullets and ramming power to defensive ones such as a speed boost or a shield. Once you've tapped a character, their ability begins and starts to drain their power meter. You can use them until the meter is drained or you can use them for a quick moment and tap them again to save power and start to recharge. You can only use one character at a time, so this becomes a fun and challenging (but simple) balance of using them for your full advantage.

There's nothing too surprising when playing in the multiplayer modes. You can choose your own custom tanks to use from your garage and battle in five aesthetically different maps. The goal is to do the most damage during these matches in the pre-determined amount of time.  There are 3 different sets of rules to play with: Free-for-All, Team Battle and Bomb Battle.  Bomb battle puts a gigantic blue bomb in the middle of the map, and you can use it to deal great damage on the other teams' base.

These modes are tried and true, and work better the more people you have to play with. Luckily there is a Download Play option if only one of you has the game. Although all modes are still playable in this option, the caveat is that everyone has to play with the same tank and Troopers. On top of that, there is only one level to choose from. By now this has become the standard for Download Play features in games, but it still stinks to not have these options, especially when there isn't any online multiplayer.

Yes, Nintendo decided to release a multiplayer focused game in 2017 without online play. Instead they did their thing and made it a "local multiplayer-only experience." This is a darn shame, because this could be the perfect quick eShop game to play with my friends when I have a couple of minutes to spare.

The good news is that even though Tank Troopers doesn't feature online play, it does feature very fun local multiplayer and super fun single-player modes. With all of the missions to master, Tanks and Troopers to collect, and good selection of modes to play with your friends, Tank Troopers is a great little game packed with content that would be a great addition to your 3DS library.

TalkBack / Scribble (Wii U) Review
« on: February 14, 2017, 01:33:26 AM »

A fun party game that brings Pictionary-style fun to Wii U with tons of options.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/44109/scribble-wii-u-review

You know when you have a bunch of people over and you need a game for all of them to play? One that's also simple enough for everyone to understand and play instantly? Bear Box Media's Scribble could be the Wii U eShop game to help you out. It's a pictionary-like game that features five game modes, more than 1,500 words, and a unique feature called "Mutators." Although awkward stumbles crop up along the way, Scribble proves to be a successful party game that is fun for all ages.

The Versus Mode is your standard pictionary game. In this mode, you can have up to eight different players and set up your game in many customizable ways. When you draw your sketches. you have the option to use different colors and three different pen thicknesses, which are nice to have to aid you while you draw.

Fortunately, if you are playing with a youngster, you can enable an Easy Mode for their turn. This will make simple words appear for them to draw. Even when playing with adults only, I turned the Easy Mode on for all of the players and the game turned into a fast-paced frenzy.  Other customizable options include how long each player gets at drawing (ranging from 15 Seconds to 3 Minutes), how many turns (or rounds) each player gets, and finally the options to enable Custom Words and/or Mutators.

There are some little annoyances while playing Scribble that can cause some frustration. For one, after someone has guessed the correct answer and you have selected their name on the GamePad, there is a five-second delay before your next word appears, all while your precious drawing time is dwindling.  This might not seem like a lot on paper, but when you are determined to win as many points as you can, that five seconds can seem like a long time.  You can give yourself more time with the customizable options, but the problem still persists.  This is not a deal breaker by any means, but it stuck out during my game sessions.  Another issue that came up is the word library.  There are over 1,500 words, but they range from "Frog" to "Psychiatrist" to "Mud Running."  Guessing words may be easier for others, but I did frequently hear "I don't even know what this word is."  A good solution to this problem is either using Easy Mode or making your own words with the Custom Words feature.

You can add Custom Words directly from the menu in the Word Creator.  It's as simple as it sounds, any word up to 13 characters using letters and numbers.  This gives you the ability to add silly words like "Propane" or "Uncle Frank" to the mix, and let you really mold the game to the company you have.  Custom Words ends up being a practical feature that is very easy to implement.

More fun twists to the mix are the Mutators.  These are little distractions (five in total) that you can add to any game mode.  "Blackout" puts a big ink blot only on the GamePad's screen, making it hard to draw without looking at the television's screen.  Another Mutator called "Flip" really throws the sketch artist off by making them draw backwards.  This is definitely a fun little mechanic. There really is something magical when you watch someone concentrate extremely hard on drawing words that turn out to be "cake" or "triangle".  The other Mutators are also a blast, and can really switch things up after playing a certain mode one way for some time.

The other main game modes offer some fun variations to the normal Versus game.  You can also play with Teams, giving you the chance to pit one side of the room against the other.  The Tug 'O' Draw mode lets you play on Teams, but with a twist: both sides can guess for points.  Barricade is a Mode that pits one team against the other on the top and bottom of a checkered screen.  You win by making your way to the other team’s goal line by getting correct guesses with your team.  The Elimination Mode makes things simple, if no one guesses your word you are out of the game. The last mode is called Just Doodle.  This is a great feature in Scribble that lets you make your own rules by not having any timer or point system.  If you want to just sit there with your friends and draw funny things on the TV, this is the mode for you.  This could also be great for playing with young children by letting them go at their own pace.

Overall, Scribble hits all of the marks of a solid multiplayer party game.  It knows what it wants to do and executes well on it.  So if you have a bunch people over and want a simple game for an enjoyable time, consider downloading Scribble.  Anyone can play it, and everyone will enjoy it.

Starting where we left off, Perry continues his quest to beat every classic Capcom game and in doing so he can check Demon's Crest off the list. Having now finished the Firebrand trilogy, where does it rank on his list of the best in the series? Jumping from classic games to mobile games Casey got his hands on Nintendo's newest release on the platform, Fire Emblem Heroes. Unlike Mario Run this is a free to play standard mobile experience and quite frankly, it left much to be desired. Moving along to another fresh release, Perry's been playing Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World. He has been adoring the port of this Wii U classic thus far and as a bonus it came bundled with the cutest amiibo of all time! To wrap up "What We've Been Playing" Casey talks about the NES Classic Edition after he was lucky enough to nab one from Best Buy. He's been playing it a lot more than he had anticipated and put his skills up against Double Dragon II. Was he able to make it through without abusing the save state feature?

After a short break we dive into the eShop and Virtual Console releases, it turned out to be a pretty good looking week and we'll 100% be talking about at least one of the new games next episode. We get into the news and got some information about Switchs online pricing, some interesting Google Trends with Nintendo pre ordering and got to see a bunch of Jool's new game Chicken Wiggle.

It only took 19 episodes, but we've finally got enough questions to do a full fledged Mail Bag segment! We're asked about our most preferred way to play 3DS, our most disappointing Wii U game and even our very early predictions for what our top 5 games of 2017 will look like. Thanks to Jonathan, Joe and (Good Ol') Dan for writing in! We wrap up the show as we always do with some Craiglist Round Up. Perry's been wheeling and dealing like always, but is it another week of Keepsy Weepsy?

IT'S GIVEAWAY TIME! It's been too long since our last giveaway so here we are. Since we enjoyed answering your questions so much we want even more! We want you to email or tweet us a question you'd like us to answer on the show. Also follow, Like and Retweet the tweet below for up to four entries. The grand prize winner will take home a $20 eShop Gift Card and 7 others will get a Wii U game! Check the tweet below for all the details.

We introduce a new segment, Compatible, where we look back at different Nintendo peripherals.

We kick off What We’ve Been Playing with the conclusion of a pair of Capcom games we’ve recently talked about. For Casey it took nearly a six hour marathon, but he was able to see the credits role on Resident Evil VII. Perry on the other hand didn’t quite need six hours to beat Gargoyles Quest II, but the end result was the same. The boys thoroughly enjoyed what Capcom had to offer in these drastically different franchises. It was a busy week for Casey so he didn’t get a chance to play too many games (outside of chugging along SMTIVA), but he did find time to volunteer with his local Retro Gaming Group. The group put on a Mario Kart 64 tournament and put Casey in charge of refereeing. After the conclusion of the tournament he got to scope out the arcade area and got his hands on some old classics, including another Capcom developed game.

A light week for the eShop Round Up was made up by a big week in news! Nintendo had an investor meeting and naturally a lot info came out along with it. We go over some numbers and plenty of mobile talk. Oh yeah it only took 17 years, but someone finally found that hidden rainbow coin in Donkey Kong 64!

We are happy to introduce a new recurring segment, Compatible. In this segment we take a look back at different peripherals from Nintendo’s past, give a brief history, our experiences with it, how it shaped future endeavors for Nintendo and ultimately if it was a failure or success. For the inaugural segment we will take a look back to the Gamecube Gameboy Advance Link Cable and see what it had to offer in the terms of new features and connectivity.

Wrapping up the show is the return of Craiglist Roundup! It’s been a few episodes since Perry has told us of his spoils and to make up for it he’s returned with vengeance. He’s been wheeling and dealing, but it seems like with the jam packed segment came a whole lot of Keepsy Weepsy.

Switch madness has subsided for the time being and we can finally return to a normal episode of the Talk Nintendo Podcast. So what better way to do so than talk about a Playstation 4 game? Casey kicks off the show with his very premature impressions of Resident Evil 7 before diving into a game he recently returned to, Fire Emblem Fates. After steamrolling Birthright and Conquest he took nearly a year break before getting into Revelations, but did it stand out from the others? Speaking of returning to a game after a long hiatus, Perry is back to take another crack at Gargoyles Quest. He’s had some practice in the previous weeks with some other Capcom classics, but did it prepare him enough to get Firebrand through his quest? Next on the docket for Casey is Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse, another game he’s been meaning to get around to playing.  It feels like home after playing through SMTIV, but that's not a bad thing at all. Rounding out What We’ve Been Playing, Perry checks out the demo for the soon to be release Yoshi Woolly World for 3DS. Needless to say it has him excited to get back into more Yoshi goodness.

It was stated that Switch madness had subsided, but it’s not completely gone and given the console is due to release in just five weeks, that’s a good thing. This extra long newly titled news segment is filled with not only Switch offerings, but plenty of great stuff coming the 3DS’ way. Starting with all the information out of the Fire Emblem Direct the boys cover more Switch launch titles, new Nintendo selects and a complete remake from the ground up of Elliot Quest!

After a very jam packed news segment we get into our topic of the show, Wii Demand Wii. Somehow Casey and Perry both managed to miss Wario Land Shake It! and felt a disservice was at hand. Recently released on the Wii U virtual console, both the guys opted to pick up the original and fire up Wii mode and tackle this hidden gem. Casey and Perry take a deep dive into everything Wario starting with a brief history and talking about level design, presentation, music and much more in first installment of Wii Demand Wii!

The Switch Presentation has come and gone and we had some time to let it marinade, but before the boys get into all of that we welcome special guest host Alex Osborn! Alex is a free lance writer for IGN, a big time Nintendo fan and he makes videos on his Youtube channel and we were so honored to have him as our guest!

It’s been a few weeks since we talked about games we’ve actually played, so we jump into an abbreviated We We’ve Been Playing segment before getting into the meat and potatoes of the Treehouse stream. Perry kicks us off with his wrap up of Bionic Commando: Elite Forces. He enjoyed that game so much what did he do? Well he dove right back into the series, but this time with the original Bionic Commando for the Game Boy. The real question at hand is did it stack up to Elite Forces? Well if this was any indicator, he played through Bionic Commando twice. Alex is a busy man and hasn’t had the chance to play many games as of late, so what better way to get him involved than a team Mystery History! A first for the Talk Nintendo Podcast, Alex and Perry join forces to see if they can guess what game Casey’s been playing.

After a quick break, we break down the entire Treehouse Stream that followed the Switch Presentation. Well... almost the entire thing. Sadly, we lost the first twenty minutes or so after we came back. Luckily we didn’t lose anything too important, only our Zelda talk. Although mostly it turned into amiibo talk since that’s the majority of what the segment was highlighting. To fill you in Casey has ‘em all preordered, Perry has one of them on order and Alex doesn’t have a single amiibo, ever! Despite the hiccup we go on to have our longest episode yet clocking in around two hours and forty five minutes with comprehensive discuss on the rest of the stream and we finish with Alex’s thoughts on the presentation.

Again we want to thank Alex for coming on and we want you guys to check out his stuff, it’s really great! You can find Alex on twitter and don’t forget to check out his Youtube Channel and give him a subscription!

Check out Alex's YouTube!

Next week is our “Wii Demand Wii” where we will be diving head first into Shake Land to discuss a game neither of us have played, Wario Land Shake It! for the Wii. Remember, you still have time to send in an email with your thoughts and impressions! We will be reading your submissions on air to add to the conversation.

NINTENDO SWITCH! After months of waiting Nintendo has finally pulled back the curtains to give us a look at all things Switch. Just a reminder that to everyone, we will be playing Wario Land Shake It for our "Wii demand Wii" segment. We'll be playing through the game and having an in depth convo about our time with the game. We'd love to hear from you guys if you decide to play along with us or if you've played it in the past. Want to get your opinions read out on the show? Thanks to those who participated in our 2016 Game of the Year poll we can officially say Paper Mario Color Splash is Talk Nintendo Podcast's Game of the Year! Also congratulations to Rudy (@Guywiththetaco) for winning a $10 eShop card for casting his vote.

It’s a new year, so what does that mean? Time to play some old games! This week’s what we’ve been playing segment is chuck full of virtual console titles and Perry kicks it off with the newly released Mario Kart 64 on the Wii U VC. It’s been so long since he’s sat behind the wheel he forgot how slippery the controls were. Are the loose controls something that he found refreshing or does he prefer the tighter controls of more recent Mario Kart titles? Casey keeps the newly released virtual console theme going with Castlevania Dracula X. It took the title a few weeks to finally appear on the eShop, but was it worth the wait? Next up, Perry plays plays an old Game Boy Color classic.  Have you ever wanted to play a platformer where you couldn’t jump? Well if that’s the case then Bionic Commando: Elite Forces is for you! Perry takes this game for a spin and found that grappling is pretty sweet. Who needs jumping, anyway? After that, Casey bucks the trend of virtual console games and talks about a game he bought during the show last week, Mini Golf Resort. Visually the game looks great, but unfortunately he wishes he could find something else nice to say about the game.

After the shows longest eShop Round Up ever, the boys discuss some of the latest Switch rumors (as is tradition). But don’t worry! All this rumor talk will finally become fact or fiction after next week’s presentation, which happens to be the subject of this week's main topic.  Casey and Perry drop some hot predictions for the event, nineteen each to be exact. Ranging from realistic to pie in the sky, you won’t want to miss how wrong the guys are when we come together next week and tally up to see just how bad they did.

Since the presentation is on Thursday instead of recording on Tuesday like we normally would we will be recording immediately after the presentation Thursday evening. This way we can give you our hot off the stove impressions of all the craziness that is likely to ensue. Due to this we will post the episode early Friday morning instead of Thursday nights as usual.  We’re almost there people, only one more week to go!

Happy Holidays from us to you! It’s the holiday season and since Nintendo doesn’t have Zelda for us we take a dive back into familiar waters. Nothing warms the soul like some good ol’ fashioned comfort food, The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It’s been a few years since Casey's last replay, but the wave of nostalgia is too good not to talk about. Perry’s also been playing Zelda, and gives his final thoughts on Twilight Princess HD after freshly finishing it.  How does it stack up in his eyes with other Zeldas?  Continuing the thread of final thoughts, Casey gives us final impressions on Pokemon Moon. It’s great, but is it the best Pokemon game ever?  Then, it's the return of everyone’s favorite segment: Mystery History!  Perry puts Casey through the ringer, but can Casey finally get one right?  We wrap up this extra long what we’ve been playing with Nintendo’s first true mobile game. We both were eager to try Super Mario Run, and boy did it really knock our socks off.

After the break we crunch some numbers as we take a look at Super Mario Run’s historic launch on iOS. It smashed the record for most downloads on day one (sorry Pokemon Go) and looks to be climbing. What should really turn into its own segment at this point, we talk about more Switch leaks and this time it’s digging through patents and rumors of how powerful the system is.

Since it’s almost Christmas we read out some holiday Nintendo memories we received during the contest from Reddit. Some are heartwarming and some are funny, but it’s always great to hear people enjoying Nintendo at the holidays. Casey even shares the story of the Christmas he got the Gamecube. Perry also has a surprise in store for Casey as he sent him a Christmas package. Listen as he reads out some hints and takes a stab at what each individually wrapped gift could be. Casey had a gift for Perry, but it didn’t get to him yet. (No really, I swear I sent one! - Casey)

Another week, another Switch leak. This time we have on good authority to believe that the recent Gamecube virtual console leak is true. We talk about some games we hear are coming, what we hope might be coming and what this could mean for different joy-cons. That’s not the only thing Switch related, Nintendo is sending out emails for a chance to play the Switch early! Casey got one, but did he get the follow up email or did they give him the ol’ bait and switch?! (Spoiler, he got baited.)

We forego what we’ve been playing this week because there was a task at hand. A few episodes back it was DEMANDED a pair of games be played! These games are favorites of one person, but criminally overlooked by the other. Nearly twenty years late to the party, Perry finally gets to experience the greatest kart racer of all time: Diddy Kong Racing (Casey's words). But as a man who doesn’t love Rare … could it possibly live up to the billing? After a short break we turn in our karts, hovercrafts and planes for a cape and glide into the dark gritty world of Arkham Origins. Perry fell in love with the combat in this stealth filled action game, but does it do enough to hook Casey? Find out what the guys thought about each other’s games in the first of what will be many “I Demand You” segments!

After finding a new love for classic Castlevania while playing Super Castlevania IV, Casey decided to pick up the Wii U exclusive Citadale: Gate of Souls and give it a go. The game certainly has a handful of technical problems, but was it enough to spoil the experience? No 3D and no online sharing was enough to have Perry take a hard pass on Super Mario Maker 3DS ... or so he thought. Turns out he got a heck of a deal and is darn glad he picked up the portable version! Speaking of new found loves, Casey might have found another series he has fallen head over heels for, Pilotwings. The SNES launch title still holds up and is a ton of fun, plus you can't beat SNES games on the go. Wrapping up what we've been playing Perry finishes with the darker-toned Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess HD. Is there much more needed to be said about this classic reborn? Well yes, yes there is and the boys do just that as they gush over this great entry.

After a short break Casey and Perry come back to talk about all the latest releases and jump into some juicy Switch leaks. As we get closer and closer to the January 12th unveiling it seems very likely the rumors will continue picking up steam and we'll be right here talking about 'em. Star Fox Warriors?!

'Tis the holiday season and to celebrate we're giving away our Donkey Kong Holiday Bundle! We're giving away both Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze for the Wii U to one lucky winner! To enter check out our twitter below for up to three chances to enter! We will randomly select a winner on Tuesday December 13th at 8pm EST.

Mystery History! We welcome back round three of Mystery History and this time we get to watch Casey squirm again as he tries to figure out what Perry’s been playing. He gets off to a hot start, but is it all for naught? Jumping from mystery history to a pair of games that just made Nintendo history, Casey gives us the run down on Pokemon Moon. Continuing his theme of retro games, Perry explores the wonders of the Mega Man Legacy Collection by playing the classic Mega Man 2. (Little does Perry know Casey is purchasing the collection for a second time while he sings its praises.) The boys wrap up what they’ve been playing with the Nintendo eShop exclusive Swap Fire. The game has a lot of unique and fun ideas, but is the overall package worth the price of admission?

Happy 10 year anniversary Wii! It’s hard to believe, but the Wii is officially over a decade old. Casey and Perry take a look back at the Wii including the Revolution, the controller and the name reveal as well as reminisce about their experiences with acquiring and playing the console. The retrospective comes to a close talking about software. Which are Casey and Perry's favorite Wii games?

TalkBack / Twisted Fusion (Wii U) Review
« on: November 26, 2016, 03:07:29 PM »

Good ideas are marred by some technical issues in this Wii U Metroidvania.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/43721/twisted-fusion-wii-u-review

Twisted Fusion is a Kickstarter-backed, side-scrolling open-world game made exclusively for Wii U. It’s an ambitious game, with up to five-player cooperative multiplayer, off-TV play and extensive Wii U GamePad utilization. The scope is vast, but it appears that the developer Leuvision couldn’t quite pull off making such a bold game as this adventure doesn’t overcome the technical issues..

In Twisted Fusion, your main weapon is a water gun. This world you are trapped in apparently doesn't have a lot of water, and all of the monsters occupying the land get hurt when sprayed with it. The good news is that you have an unlimited supply of water ammunition at your disposal, so luckily you can take out as many of these monsters as you want. A simple upgrade system, fueled by acquiring coins from falling enemies, keeps your character growing throughout the adventure.

Twisted Fusion features heavy GamePad usage and ideas. You can access a variety of tools and options, ranging from the upgrade-buying Loot Store to the Difficulty Slider. The latter lets you change the difficulty on the spot at any time. Ranging from two to nine, the player can utilize this function to their needs. At times, the idea is interesting, but it can expose balancing issues. For example, If you wanted to get more coins quickly for an upgrade, you could slide it up to a higher difficulty to get a better reward for slaying an enemy. But this can be easily exploited by finding enemies that pose no threat and annihilating them at an elevated level to get more coins.  The slider is an appreciated idea for sure, but could have been improved with a better balanced reward system.

Many optional elements round out the experience. Ample secret areas and side quests can hide neat rewards. A Pokemon Go-esque mini-game is present as well, letting you collect eggs from fallen foes and then raise up teams to do battle in the Monster Towers. It’s a fun complement to the main game.

In Twisted Fusion, there is no map system, which seems like a potential disaster for a Metroid-inspired game. When I personally play open-world platformers, I rely heavily on the map system. The lack of one here, however, doesn't cause as much a problem as you might think. Not knowing where you can go in a dungeon adds a lot of mystery and a refreshing amount of discovery. Not relying on a map inherently makes you learn the layout by yourself, giving you a better sense of your surroundings. The problem lies, though, in the monotonous feeling of the dungeons. Every hallway, room, and corridor looks the same. This can cause an unneeded and overwhelming feeling of frustration, souring the sense of exploration. Getting to the end of a rather large dungeon only to find a locked door and a missing key somewhere makes the uninspired architecture a bit of an annoyance.

Luckily the music in these areas is delightful. Jonathan Adamich's score does a great job at setting the mood. When you are dropped into a big, new, and mysterious world, the whimsical harmonies and anticipating progressions are very good at producing an adventurous feeling for the player.  My only complaint would be that there should be more variations of the theme throughout the campaign. The sound effects however do need improvement. Coupled with the uncertain animations, sometimes you don't know if you are hurting an enemy or the enemy is hurting you.  It’s not game-breaking, but can be quite frustrating.

Cooperative multiplayer is a rather fun bonus for Twisted Fusion. I only had the chance to play with one other person, but the experience went quite well. Playing together feels good, and getting to team up and surround enemies to take them down is fun and rewarding.

The players share all of the upgrades and the health bar (just like in Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes) and that can prove to balance the difficulty set up by having multiple players shooting and cornering enemies. Each player can also select from a range of characters that each have their own special move.

A problem does come up (quite frequently when facing bosses) with the game's camera.  When player two gets off the screen, they will automatically respond to player one's position.  However, by the time they have completely appeared in the game, they could be right in the middle of an enemy, get hit, and die.

Speaking of controls, how you generally control your character in Twisted Fusion unfortunately is hindered a bit by the choppy camera movement and frame rate. This poses, I believe, the biggest problem in the overall quality of the game. Jumping feels a little floaty, and combined with the undependable sound effects, it can feel quite awkward. One thing to note here is the camera on the TV screen is zoomed out quite a bit more than if played on just the GamePad, so if you are having problems with the controls it might help to switch how you are playing.

All in all, Twisted Fusion is a good game with a solid structure that woefully lacks a lot of polish. A lot of fun can be had and a nice sense of adventure pervades the game, but sadly the whole thing is held back by the choppy camera, frame rate, and overall production quality.

We come together on this most festive of holidays to eat a plethora of food and talk about the games we've been playing. We kick off the show with Dragon Quest VII, a game that has been on Casey's plate for just over two months and he can now officially put a fork in it. Was it worth investing all that time or did it fall short of expectations? Lewis Pugh was friendly enough to send us a code for Twisted Fusion and Perry took the opportunity to dive in. Does this metroidvania game stand tall upon the eShop offerings? Making Talk Nintendo history, Casey brings the first Nontendo game to the table as he discusses Battlefield 1.

After Jools' appearance on the show a few weeks ago, Perry decided to revisit a game he somehow skipped over. The arcade puzzle game Bomb Monkey might be inexpensive, but that doesn't mean it doesn't pack a punch in the gameplay department. Continuing with the theme of skipped over games, Casey jumps into the newly released VC title, Excitebike 64. The controllers are difficult to master, but is it too much to enjoy the overall package? We wrapped up what we've been playing with a little game called Swapdoodle. This cute game/messaging app is too much fun ... and it's free?!

After a quick break the guys come back to talk some news and what would a week of news be without more Switch rumors. This time however they're getting strange ... Mario RPG x Rabbids game ... urghhh?! The show wraps up with a busy week in the world of the ol' Craig List. Perry is wheeling and dealing this week, but it seems his purchases might be destined for his personal collection.

You might be asking, "Another episode already?!" That's damn right! We're happy to announce we'll be going weekly from this point moving forward. We'll likely be alternating weeks where we talk about what we've been playing, but we'll always have a fresh fun new episode for you each week!

Do you want to hear about all sorts of Mario games? Well we hope the answer to that question is yes because that's exactly what we have in store for you. Ironically though we start off the segment with a non Mario game as Perry cracks open some Splatoon amiibo to see what they add to what is already his favorite game possibly ever. Afterwards Casey starts off the Mario block by rolling the dice on Mario Party Star Rush. The game touts a new fast paced mode, but does it miss the mark? Perry continues his trend of revisiting older games by playing some Super Mario 3D Land. Is it as much fun now as it was originally when released back in 2011? Would you believe Casey if he told you Paper Mario Color Splash was one of his top 5 Wii U games? He wouldn't have thought so either, but the game really knocked his socks off. Perry also weighs in as his wife and him play through this adventure together.

This week's news includes even more Mario! The details on Super Mario Run have been revealed and the guys talk about their hopes and expectations. What would a week in the life of a Nintendo gamer be without some juicy Switch rumors. We touch on some of the latest.

The NES Classic is sold out everywhere and scalpers are once again at it again selling the hot item for five times the amount. This sparked an interesting discussion of what we think makes someone a scalper and if there is a difference between selling or trading for more than what the retail price is. And as always, we wrap up the show with the Good Ol' Craiglist Finds! Perry has been busy scouring the listings, but did he find anything worth while this week?

Friendly reminder there is still time to enter our Pokemon Sun and Moon Giveaway! But hurry, not much time remains. We'll select a winner 11/18/16 at 8pm Eastern!

I enjoyed the virtual boy talk. I would like to get one eventually.

Yeah it's a pretty corky system, but is definitely something everyone should try if they can. Although they're sort of being a little pricey. Glad I got mine like ten years ago so it wasn't so bad.

We're honored to welcome our first ever guest, Jools Watsham to the podcast! Jools comes ready to talk about a slew of eShop games touching on Mercenaries Saga 2, Chase: Cold Case Investigations and the newly released Corpse Party.

After a short break we jump into talking about the much forgotten Virtual Boy. Although it might have been a black (and red) eye for Nintendo it did yield some great things such as Wario Land and more importantly the groundwork of Mutant Mudds. Our discussion eventually shifts gears as we talk to Jools about all things Atooi. We touch on our love of Mutant Mudds, the longly anticipated Treasurenauts and we learn some design philosophy as we discuss the soon to be released Chicken Wiggle. We wrap up the show as we always do with the good ol' Craiglist finds. We even had write in from friend of the show Andy Goergen who got a great pick up himself.

We are proud to announce we'll be giving away two physical copies of Pokemon! We will randomly select two winners. Follow the tweet below for full details.

In honor of Nintendo's new console Casey and Perry decide to Switch up the format and jump right into the Topic of the Show, which just so happens to be the Switch! After a few days, are they still as excited as before or did watching the reveal video a hundred times send the hype train off the rails?! The boys discuss the console, possible peripherals, games we know about and go in depth on all possible third party games you could ever imagine (whether they're based in reality or just pipe dreams).

After a long winded Switch discussion, the boys get back into what they've been playing and Perry kicks it off with Yoshi's Island DS. Does this sequel stack up to the much loved SNES game or does it fall short and get carried away by a group of Fly Guys? Finally the much anticipated return of Mystery History is upon us! This time Casey gets to sit back and enjoy Perry squirm as he tries to guess what he could possibly be playing. Last but certainly not least both Casey and Perry have been messing around with Pirate Pop Plus and have a nice discussion that might have actually lasted longer than the game itself.

As always the show is wrapped up with our (well really Perry's) Craigslist finds. With the World Series underway, Perry decided it'd be fitting to take out his home run bat and swing for the fences. Does he connect and hit one out of the park? Yes, yes he does.

Another Nindie Summer Jam game?! You betcha, this time on the docket is Severed. Casey hacks and slashes his way through one of the more depressing games he’s ever played, but did the overall experience leave him feeling blue? From touch screen madness to arm waving fun, Perry swings back into an oldie, but a goodie with Wii Sports Club. Casey playing another super Japanese game? You don’t say, but this time it’s a little different take with the fast paced Azura Striker Gunvolt. Perry has a few words of his own about the game as well. Last but not least the boys have been playing the new hotness that is Paper Mario Color Splash. Was it love at first splash or are there too many shades of Sticker Star for their liking?

NX leaks, new releases and game delays! Casey and Perry give their thoughts about all the happenings in Nintendo news. After a quick break we continue to explore the boys gaming tastes with the Topic of the Show! Is there much overlap with their Top 5 Most Played 3DS games?! Unlikely but you’ll be sure to find out! My most played Wii U game is Splatoon at over 93 hours. It is also my most played game ever and my favourite game ever.

I have also put close to 70 hours into Mario Kart 8, almost all online. That is easily the best Mario Kart ever.

Two amazing games. Like I said on the podcast, I know MK8 didn't bring any ground shattering additions to the franchise, but easily the most polished MK experience out there in my opinion!
