The Wii-exclusive role-playing game from Mistwalker is nearing the final stages of development.

The latest Last Story development blog update reveals that the game is nearing the end of its development cycle. According to Director Hironobu Sakaguchi, “Development of The Last Story is at last at the finale. The tense feeling is pleasant."

Despite the game being nearly completed, no screens or video have been released by Nintendo or Mistwalker nor has an official release date been confirmed. Currently, the game has only been announced as a Japanese release.

I really don't think Mistwalker are going about this the right way. We should know more about The Last Story by now -- I can't be excited for a new IP if it remains a mystery long after its announcement. What's the point in Sakuguchi coming out with stuff like "We will utilise human emotion" or "It's not a Final Fantasy clone" or "The game is nearly finished" when we have basically nothing to go on?

And this is different from what Nintendo usually does, how?

Although Nintendo takes this approach with some games, they can create excitement much more easily since they tend to stick with established franchises. They may not have shown diddly squat about Legend Of Zelda for Wii but, come on, it's the next instalment in the massively acclaimed Zelda series - the hype builds itself. The Last Story means nothing to most people, so they need to try harder to get people's attention.

Nintendo is secretive with iron clad NDA's and Deadly Ninjas with prestigious law degrees to enforce them. Sakaguchi knows he can't reveal anything without Nintendo's expressed written approval less he face the wrath of Yamauchi as it reigns down upon him from the highest peaks of Mt. Fuji. And no jungle in Hawaii is thick enough or any cave deep enough to hide him from the reach of Nintendo.

Besides..... E3 is right around the corner, we don't know anything about any game coming from Nintendo that releases after June. So be patient, there are less than 2 months left till we find out everything we need to know for all releases from June till the end of the year.

Wow, I'm sick of this game already.

Just wait until James starts talking about it in New Business.

I'm right with you on that.  As I said in the game's topic, Sakaguchi seems to think he's Sakurai with all these blog updates, yet he misses the key point about those Smash Bros. entries: while the writing was silly, there were screenshots and videos to back up everything Sakurai was saying about the game.  With Sakaguchi's Last Story updates, it's all "telling" instead of "showing".  We still have no earthly idea what this game looks like or how it plays, just what Sakaguchi says in his posts and his concept art.

Now, I realize that he probably isn't showing anything concrete because Nintendo's going to give it a proper unveiling at E3.  Fine, that's how it should be, but shut the hell up about the game in the meantime if there's nothing more you can show us than promises.  This is how stuff gets overhyped.  I'm a huge RPG gamer, so I'm the intended audience for this game and even I'm finding myself caring less about this game the more he hypes it.

I can't help but feel that it's going to be entirely mediocre.

Like allegedly every other RPG that Mistwalker has produced up till now (yes, I know Lost Odyssey has its fans)?  Yeah, that's entirely possible.  Still, it's not like we'll have had any better RPGs on Wii by the time that game releases (yes, I have no faith whatsoever in the quality of Arc Rise Fantasia, just based on interviews with the devs).
