Except in that case, you've got an individual winner for something non-work related.  Even though everyone participates, people lose, and there's nothing they could do to help that.  It's silly, but it could cause bad blood.  And... you might think everyone would agree, but have you ever tried to convince a group of people that their current tradition is stupid, and yours is better, even if it is?  Your idea is better, but if it were to change, vudu would be wise not to be the one to change it.  People react to random stuff like that on a hair-trigger, and it can cause trouble.  Even having a vote on what to do could cause some weird passive-aggressiveness in the work place, and it's just not worth the trouble.  This isn't a battle I'd pick to fight, because it's just not that big of a deal, and the potential consequences far outweigh the potential benefits.

I agree with Stogi.  It's completely illogical.  It's a waste of money.  But so is the life insurance policy I have.  I haven't died yet so it's money down the drain.  ;)

Life insurance, heh. I never knew why they called it life insurance. It's more like death insurance. In case I die, my dead body will give you money to dress me up and but me in the ground from harms way.

But anyway, I think I can help you out. *cocks gun*

Well, if your reasoning is simply that, just stick the two bucks in a jar or a bank account, or a long-term stock investment, or on candy, or something else.

Oh, or, to make things easier, tell everyone to save up two dollars every week for a year, then buy all the lottery tickets at once.  You still won't win, but then they'll stop playing because they realize it isn't worth throwing away a hundred dollars a year for that sort of thing.

That's retarded.

How is "Let's win the lottery so we can all get the **** out of this shitty job!" a boost to moral? If anything, it's a detriment. Furthermore, they could pool their dollars together and do something that would bring them much closer, if that was the point, such as having a weekly lottery with a real prize; e.g. a movie or simply the money.

Bonding doesn't have to make sense, but it doesn't need money thrown down a drain to be sustained. And if picking a prize would be such a big deal (which it wouldn't) then do it for money; tangible real money. Have everyone chip in for a month and at the end announce a winner. That way someone gets a nice bonus and there are no arguments.

I think everyone would agree that's a better idea than wishing with a ticket upon a star.

I don't think you get it.

giving an individual prize to individual people will cause tension, rivalries or jealousy.
putting in a forgettable $2 a week towards the "Group Departure Plan" and Hope that one day you will be able to say "**** this job" and walk away rich without a care in the world is actually effortless and priceless. Now everyone has the same thing to look forward to, Financial and Personal freedom and it's something they all get to share equally IF it happens. I'm sure no one expects it to happen, but if it does, everyone involved wins, not just Sally or Tom who say their goodbyes with a huge grin to most a "**** you" to the rest. You practically have to do nothing but give an insignificant $2 every week for a potential life changing payoff.

And this is why the lotto exists.  ;D  Not because it's a positive expected payoff (-$2 + % change of win x win amount) but because it makes people feel good.  It gives us something to joke about.

I don't think you get statistics

I get statistics (see above).  But that's not the point.

who plays the lotto for statistics?
statistics say you never win or you have better chances of catching Polio(like Stogi said)

how many people play and actually expect to win?
I think it's a waste of money to everyone but the person that actually wins, and until I actually win, it would be an incredible waste of my money for nothing other than the hope to one day win. But I will never win since you gotta "pay to play" and you need to "play to win".

It's only because you don't seem to understand the bonding associated with it.

Either everyone wins or it's business as usual. Everyone has the same thing to gain or the same thing to lose.
It's kinda like everyone starting a business together and everyone is an equal partner.
If things go good, then everyone profits and everyone is happy.
If it all goes bad, well then we all get to laugh it off and try again next week.
but either way, everyone is in it together, and it's something that only that group of people get to share(Like Google employees and Google stock when they first went public).

In some places people flagellate themselves to commemorate Ashura. The Galli castrated themselves in memory of Combabus.

BNM is exactly right.  I'm guessing he secretly plays the pool at his office, too.  ;)

I would never, ever, ever buy lottery tickets on my own.

I understand that the cost isn't greater than the expected payout.  e.g. a $1 ticket has approximately a 0.000000569% chance of winning the Mega Millions lotto.  The jackpot has to be over $175 million to a single winner (assuming no taxes!) before it has an expected positive payout.

Jackpot             Expected payout
$1,000,000$0.01
$10,000,000$0.06
$100,000,000$0.57
$150,000,000$0.85
$175,000,000$1.00
$200,000,000$1.14

Again, winning isn't the point.

All 11 Star Trek Movies on Blu-ray: 10/10

The new one came out today and I figured why the hell not buy all of them while I'm there. I could have just bought the good ones, but that would have only saved me $20 over getting all of them so I figured I should get the complete set. They get the perfect 10 despite half of them not being good because Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country are just that great.
