So I guess that means worldwide until the end of December the Wii sold just over 3 million. It didn't reach the target, but that's certainly nothing to sneeze at.

Woohoo @ the all-Nintendo top 15.

By all accounts I've heard, DS hit a supply wall in North America, which is kind of silly (hasn't Nintendo learned it's lesson yet?) but good news in the sense that it's hot.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Well, 2 million in North America and just under 4 million in Japan. So add whatever Europe bought to 6 million.

Statistics from the Famitus Top 100 of 2006

Top 3 PS3
1. Ridge Racer 7 - 98,616
2. Gundam: Target in Sight - 96,714
3. Resistance - 72,694

Top 3 360
1. Blue Dragon - 119,396
2. Dead or Alive 4 - 103,307
3. Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 - 57,060

Top 5 placement manufactuers:

1. Nintendo - 30/100
2. Bandai Namco Games - 15/100
3. Square Enix - 13/100
4. Konami - 8/100
5. Capcom - 7/100
5. Sega - 7/100

Top 5 by units:

1. Nintendo - 24,216,590
2. Square Enix - 6,847,891
3. Pokemon - 5,584,691
4. Bandai Namco Games - 4,228,898
5. Konami - 2,495,964

2004 total sales: 56,090,000 across 1019 games
2005 total sales: 55,430,000 across 1077 games
2006 total sales: 77,160,000 across 1240 games

Major dates:

3.02 - DSL crystal white launched
3.11 - DSL ice blue and enamel navy launched
3.16 - Final Fantasy XII launched
5.27 - New Super Mario Brothers launched
7.20 - DSL noble pink launched
9.02 - DSL jet black launched
9.28 - Pokemon Diamond + Pearl launched
11.11 - PlayStation 3 launched
12.2 - Wii launched
12.7 - Blue Dragon launched

Notice how Wii was not included on the Top 3 comparison, Wii Sports alone outsold all of the PS3 or 360 offerings. If you combine sales of Wii Sports and Wii Play, you would probably outsell PS3 and X360 Top 3 put together.

Also notice how the X360 Top 3 outsold the PS3 Top 3
Top 3
PS3 = 268,024
360 = 279,763

Now is you take all the bolded Nintendo stats from the statistics...
1. Nintendo - 30/100
1. Nintendo - 24,216,590

and combine then with total software sales of 2006
2006 total sales: 77,160,000 across 1240 games

...it will make you say WOW!!!

Nintendo had almost 1/3 of the software sold in Japan in 2006!!??
Am I reading that wrong? That is just insane.
Combine those #'s with the ones from Pokemon Co.
3. Pokemon - 5,584,691

and you have more than 1/3 of all software sales, something closer to 40%.
I have got to be reading these statistics wrong.

and those closest to Nintendo seems to benefit the most
Top 5 placement manufactuers:
2. Bandai Namco Games - 15/100
3. Square Enix - 13/100

Top 5 by units:
2. Square Enix - 6,847,891
3. Pokemon - 5,584,691
4. Bandai Namco Games - 4,228,898

Japan is now officially Nintendoland once again.

edit some charts for the visual types:

Software Sales 2006(Famitsu) - Publishers

Those 5 Pokemon games, are they 4 for the DS (Diamond/Pearl, Ranger, and that other one, like Trozei or something) and the Battle game for the Wii?  Shows you how little those other games sold when Diamond/Pearl got over 4 million units and they only had a few over 5 million.

Still, Nintendo rocks Japan.

Yea, GBA hardware doesn't sell anymore in Japan. But geez, 850,000 GBAs sold in the US this december, not counting november or the rest of the year. So the GBA pillar is still quite viable.

I'm guessing as far as handhelds go, the U.S. is a year behind japan in the sales trend. At Christmas sales season this year the U.S. will look similar to how Japan did last year. Our DS sell-out just started, do you think it will last a whole year? Probably not, but I think it will still sell extremely well this year in the U.S. and the GBA will become a slowly dying handheld as people realize that the DS can play GBA games too.

Remember, the GBASP is still more demanded than the Micro (going by retail prices, SPs cost 90 while Micros are around 50) so I'd expect people want the GBA because it plays GB and GBC as well.

From someone who sells the hardware on a regular basis, I really don't think most parents consider the SP's ability to play GB/GBC games a plus when picking one over the other...  Pretty much the size of the micro is what makes parents think they're getting a better deal with the more expensive SP (which is only about $80 vs. $50 for the GBm)

Well, from the looks of it, hardly anyone is selling the micro anymore.  It used to cost more than the SP.  So any difference in price proves just how bad the micro has bombed.
