TalkBack / Re: IMPRESSIONS: Mario Kart Wii
« on: April 14, 2008, 04:18:18 PM »
The removal of snaking is awesome news, but the question now lies in two other weaknesses. Firstly, are the blue shells toned down properly, and has that system been changed to make it more tolerable? Secondly, have the heavy-weight characters been properly made level with the lighter ones as was down in Super Smash Bros. Brawl? In prior versions of Mario Kart, the lighter karts were always at a profound advantage.

As someone who was ambivalent toward the c-stick debate, after having read this debate, I am no longer on the fence. Mike makes the much better points, throughout the article. He destroys Steven's weak philosophical-type arguments with straight logic. I am now in favor of bringing an end to c-stick smashes.

I would get this if the Wii Zapper weren't sold out absolutely everywhere.

This is really weird.. I've never seen anything like it. I had no problem getting a Wii on launch day. Had no problem getting Pokemon, Zelda, Mario Sunshine and Galaxy, you name it. I walked into the store and bought them. But somehow.. the Zapper is sold out at every single store in my vicinity.

If they added voice communication, it would be worth it.

But they won't and I'm sad.

This is why Wii needed an HDD to begin with.

I hope Nintendo has some storage solutions ready.

These hardware numbers are disheartening. Those PSP sales had better drop off next week.

Friend codes. No communication.

Like a monkey without a cowboy suit.

Edit: All these people who actually thik friend codes "save teh kids lives" would be well-advised to consider the existence of Xbox Live and the lack of communication that those 18-and-under "enjoy" by default unless parental controls change that situation. Wii should, very simply, utilize the same parental controls and universal username setup. No, friend codes are not a dealbreaker, but that does not mean they do not suck. They most assuredly do. This is the end of it. Nintendo dictates we'll have our friend codes and (kind of) like it. This does not make them necessary or wise.

Oh well.  Any other good PCECD games?

Ys I and II is fantastic, there are several amazing shooters, and a lot more that I can't think of on short notice because I've been out of the whole collection and retrogaming scene for too long.

The graphics look fine to me.

If Sonic X-treme had accompanied the original Nights up against Mario 64, then we'd be playing this on Sega hardware. But I'm looking forward to this game and if Sega messes it up like they do so many.. all of their other games, then I will truly have lost all faith in them. Nights not being fantastic means the one of absolute worst sentimental disasters in gaming history.

I'm really interested in Neutopia, since I don't already own it. Same can't be said for the other two, although I obviously love them.

Also, as Bob said, they need to get around to Game Boy so that other more great and hard-to-find games come around. I think that a DS adapter that uses SD cards through the GBA port would be perfect for compatibility with GB, Game Gear, Turboexpress (basically the TG-16 games, I know), and NeoGeo Pocket support.

I think it's been proven that the mainstream consumer is happy to replace faulty hardware with a repeat buy.

Ask any iPod user how many he's gone through.

Wait, wait. Does this mean they look better this way or something? Because as of now VC games look much, much better in 480P over component.

Ninja Spirit is a godly game, and when NWR gives it the "Recommended for Fans" designation while anything from Nintendo no matter what it is gets the "EVERYONE BUY IT NOW PLZ", don't believe it.

Edit: NWR, not PGC. D'oh.

Splatterhouse > Excitebike.

Excitebike is NOT WORTH 5 dollars when Excitebike 64 could have been put up for 10.

PGC ..err.. NWR hates TG16.

First off, I want to say that I'm a retrogamer that didn't play games in the 80's.. in fact, I wasn't conscious in the 80's, nor was I allowed to own a game system until 1998. So, I don't think it's fair to equate "retrogamer" with "gamer who played retrogames when they were in stores". That's not fair, because I'm an old school elitist who owns all the old games and hardware, but I've owned my NES for a shorter period of time than I have my Gamecube.

Next off, here why I don't think Kid Icarus should be recommended for everyone: the flawed save system. Like the restof us, I have complained long and hard about the fact that the VC games contain no new features. I almost understand that Nintendo wants to cheap us out on no borders for 16:9 mode and no online multiplayer or other enhancements, but the fact is that to continue in Kid Icarus you need to enter a password. An archaic password save system that Nintendo didn't even have the courtesy to save the password for you like the Metroid emulated in Prime. Ridiculous.. I'm not going to write down a big, long, clunky password every time I want to play the game again.

Anyone recommend any VC games other than games that everyone already has the real copies of (i.e. Mario games etc.)? I'm in the market for something, I'm just not sure what.

Nintendo Gaming / I finally got the component cables and then..
« on: February 05, 2007, 06:33:38 AM »
Yeah, so I'm delighted to have component cables at last. After setting the resolution to 480p and trying our Super Castlevania 4, I couldn't believe the difference in color quality and reduction of blurriness. All seemed well.. until I booted up WiiSports. Yes, WiiSports, Zelda, Red Steel.. all jaggy as hell. Never mind that the 2-D stuff looks a lot better, but the jaggies are unspeakable on polygons.

Anyone know how to treat the jagginess? I need some kind of help because it's an epidemic on the scale of 480i's blurriness.
