"If he does turnout to be an unplayable boss, that does not bode well for Ridley in my opinion, who may "suffer" (he would still be in the game, but I just think it would be cool for him to be playable) the same fate."

If they don't turn out to be playable, I just can't see them not at LEAST being Assist Trophies, which would be just fine with me personally...

NBotice how Mario get's pwned, but not Kirby. A little Sakurai favoritism going on? Hmmm?

I have a feeling that the first time that you play a Story Mode level you are forced to use a certain character or characters, and after beating the level you can then choose an unlocked character to use in all subsequent playthroughs of that stage.

Yeah, but it was Mario who brought him back to life after being defeated.

Actually Mario is technically far enough away now to not fall to the effects of the bomb.  And I don't think the opening changes for the character you choose.  I think the level may... like you start in a "jail" as Zelda or Princess Toadstool, in some random spot for Mario... In the subspace equivalent of the stadium for Kirby, etc...

Is it that hard to predict how they could draft Bowser into a story against this enemy?

Minions are drafted to the subspace army....
Subspace army shows up at Bowsers Castle.... Subspace bomb goes off; Bowser is enraged and makes the Ancient Minister enemy #1

I asume this is in reference to the Subspace minions and the Subspace Minister?  I actually love the design of these characters.  To add a little credibility to my opnion, The Comics Journal has called me the best character designer in indie comics, so my opnion carries at least a little weight.  I love the way story mode is shaping up.

Of course, everyone is allowed their own opinion.  No one has to like it.

Wow this update is cool...and I like the somewhat seriousness of the story...but really it isn't that serious.  I think it is whimsical, but it doesn't want to be completely goof ball.  Why do I say that?  Look at R.O.B.S being used in the game, or Mario being shot it oblivion...or both Princesses instantly being captured by Petey.

The game just seems be to having fun with the concepts of the game and the Nintendo universe.

I think Petey definitely is a boss character, and his character model looks cool, but that doesn't mean a smaller version of him won't be a playable character...like say the size of Bowser.  In fact, when I saw Petey I though cool, the villains in Brawl will still be villains in the main story mode.  We will have the joys of fighting Gannondorf and Bowser and Meta Knight in the story mode.

I think it'll be both whimsical and serious. Didn't the guy say he wanted to try character development this time around?

Anyways, the graphics are shaping up to be quite nice. Anyone know why the bad guy comes out of the big spaceship? Doesn't that belong to a Kirby character?

So after Petey's reveal you have lost interest in the game, unless he is playable.

Actually, I kinda understand...Petey's model is very cool, and made him look like the badass he is supposed to be.  I loved his reveal.

I guess I'm not able to fathom the logic of "if X is in the game, I won't play it.  Also Imma go post about that."

Ok sure.

I mean there are lots of restaurants that prepare food I don't eat, but I don't cross'em all off my list, and the proceed to go to them, open the door, and shout out "YOU F*CKERS SERVE SEAFOOD, AND I HATES IT SO MUCH, YOU GUYS JUST LOST MY BUSINESS AND CAN GO TO HELL."

Man, I barely like playing Petey in the Mario sports games; it's like the programmers said "Well, we need at least one character whose lanky, heavy, and controls like a tank..."

I shudder to think how he'd be in Smash, tho I'm sure the very competent Smash guys would be able to impove on before. Still, I'd rather he stick to being a boss, thanks.

I played as Petey in Mario Golf on the GC. It was a great reveal for him. It makes me wonder who else will be in Brawl. Just about anything can really happen.

In MK: DD, Petey was too damn big and obscured the track in front of you.

As much as I like satire, I don't think Brawl's the right opportunity for it (except maybe in small amounts, which I'm sure Sakurai can provide).

I think it's a perfect opportunity. Smash Bros. doesn't really lend itself to a serious storyline. It's almost like they're going for something Kingdom Hearts-esque, which is, at times, unintentionally silly because I can't take Mickey Mouse shrouded in a black cloak seriously. I get the same feeling from Mario in the new clip as he strikes a pose and runs at the bomb. Then lines like, "Being turned back into a trophy, being unable to fight, is much like death. Those are the rules of this world. But... When someone...or something...breaks those rules, the world will pay a terrible price..." just sound hokey to me. Everything revealed so far about The Subspace Emissary has been so over-the-top, but without any hint that it's done on purpose.

Maybe they're going for both, but nothing so far suggests that it is. And you can have character development without the melodrama. In fact, I'd say it's preferred.

Just to clarify, though, my current opinion of the storyline isn't going to spoil the game for me. I'm sure I'll enjoy the game either way. I'm just particular when it comes to plot. If a story doesn't engage me, it's that much harder for me to get enthralled by the experience. I'm not a fan of cutscenes in videogames, but especially if the story is lame. I'll still give it the benefit of the doubt, but every update on Adventure mode so far isn't making it easy.

At the end of Adventure Mode, didn't we all fight a Bowser who was slightly bigger than the playable version?

Im pretty sure thats how it was, and with that I don't see why Petey or Ridley wouldn't be playable.  Both characters I absolutely love and would be so dissapointed if either aren't playable.

This whole story thing looks great to me, if its going to be serious fine, by all means. All the characters look alot more "realistic" any way, lets just see where it goes.

I'm betting he'll definitely be playable.

Someone at Nintendo loves him so much it's unsettling. He's been playable in nearly every Mario sports game after SMS. I'd be stunned if they don't reveal him as a challenger tomorrow.

Probably not tomorrow, but eventually (it took them a week to officially reveal Peach, even though she was already confirmed).

I don't mind Petey that much, I just find it weird how Nintendo keeps using him as if he was a vital, canon character when he was really a one time boss. Plus, it would add yet ANOTHER Mario character to the roster when other important Nintendo franchises should be represented. Mario is already represented through 8 characters (counting Yoshi, Wario and DK).  As S_B  mentioned before, it would be turning SSB into Super Mario Zelda Pokemon Bros. Brawl.

I think between assist trophies, stickers, and minute cameos in the story mode, I think they're going to reference every Nintendo character ever. Anyone whose favorite series isn't represented in some way will have the right to be seriously offended.

I intend to be seriously offended when the EBA/Ouendan series isn't at least a sticker... T_T
