General Chat / Can someone Help Me with some Nintendo Research
« on: April 18, 2005, 04:23:38 PM »
Hey I am writing a persuasive (sp) speech on Nintendo, and why you should support them instead the compitition this generation and into next generation.

Does anyone know some good websites about Nintendos history, their exclusive games, their innovations over the years, and such.

My three main points for why you should support Nintendo are:

Exclusive Nintendo games.

Nintendo's reputation as an innovator in gaming.

Finally, Nintendo's options such as portable gaming and such.

Any good sites would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Mischief Makers was awesome.  I was able to get through have of the secret ending, but I didn't collect enough gems to fully beat it.  Mischief Makers was perhaps one of my favorite sidescrolling games.  Much better than Viewtiful Joe in my opinion.

Pokemon Snap.  Yes I second that.

I would love a good nature game.  A game about trying to take pictures of wild animals by luring them out or exploring.  Pokemon Snap did a descent job of this, but I want to explore on foot.  I want to have more options...and perhaps have little excitement in my adventure.  I mean, why not have lions chase you because you took a picture with a flash.  Or lure two animals to fight to the death and you get pictures.  Or juggle smoking out bees to take a good picture.

The chain reaction element to Pokemon Snap was cool, but it can be used to a much greater effect if you aren't on rails.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Ultimate Brain/Card Games to be... Online?!
« on: April 18, 2005, 04:26:13 AM »
I would love Ultimate Brain games.  It was a game I already wanted to get, but if its online its even better.

I love the game Go, but very few people know how to play it.  I actually am horrible at it...so a computer version with a tutorial would be nice.

Other games would just be icing on the cake for me.  And the card games could be awesome if you can play Spades, Poker, Hearts and such on the go.

Those are fake.  Somebody posted them earlier as their personal take.

The Controller is interesting...but I think the design is horrible...and proof alone that it is fake.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Will it be called the Nintendo Revolution?
« on: April 15, 2005, 08:24:40 AM »
Ian Sane:  I think you just pronounce it the Nintendo Entertainment System...but the 5 in print represents the generation.  Represents it different than the first system.

I like the name, but I don't think it fits very well.  It doesn't scream cool or generate any kind of hype.  Though, it may build hype and interest to the older gamers remembering the first generation.

In fact Nintendo could build advertising based around the old NES.

Two page print ad.

Page ONE.  Shot of the old NES system

Do you remember the REVOLUTION?

Its time for another...

I think the biggest problem with Mario Pinball was the speed, and the control of the game.  It just didn't have the right feel to it.

This game seems to be correcting those mistakes.  It looks like a pinball game one, and it should be able to handle the graphics and speed for a Pinball game.

I hope its good.  There are demands for good pinball games now that the arcade scene is dead for pinball.

I imagine that either the graphics are slightly stylized, but also a lower quality to keep frame rate up, and allow for larger amounts of action on screen.

Either that or its a poorly done shody game.  But we don't know that until we get the reviews.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Punch Out trademark
« on: April 15, 2005, 04:31:52 AM »
Savior:  The problem with that game is the formula.  It tries to be real boxing.  Punch Our Revolution shouldn't try to be boxing, but remain the puzzle/pattern game of its youth.  Just change the input device.

Another thing to consider is Nintendo may just release a boxing glove controller to the system.  I think Nintendo is beginning to enjoy custom controllers for special games.  Punch Out is definately a special game.

7935
Slingshot:  I think Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes actually used every single button.  And I also think some of the sports games do.  Not a big deal though, Metal Gear was always too complex in control for its own good.

I like the Cube Controller, but I think the design of controller can be improved upon.

I really do not see the point of using a Haptic technology without using gyroscopes.  I don't care if I feel my games or not...it will just become like the rumble pack and big ignored when done poorly.  However, if I am using Gyros to move my hands, then Haptic technology might be worth it.  It be able to "feel" movement and such.

If it is single cart I might get this game...though I really don't know 6 people that have a DS.  I really like Poker though, and any practice is good.  I will wait for a review to tell me how good it is first.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Punch Out trademark
« on: April 14, 2005, 01:16:59 PM »
Punch Out has always been a pattern recognition game.

The simple design allowed for you to Punch, Duck/Dodge, and power punch.

It was a great puzzle game like Ian said, because instead of focusing on boxing you were focused on finding the pattern and the weakness.  In that regard it is like the strategy of boxing without some of the other elements.

Punch Out would be a great game to add to the Revolution specially if it is kept to the tried and true formula.  Punch Out as an actual boxing simulation won't sell well.  I would never buy a true boxing game.

HOWEVER,

A pattern recognition puzzle game that uses the theme of boxing and Gyros that is something cool.

Punch Out could be the perfect launch game to show off the Revolution's controller, and it would be a perfect game to demo at E3.  Simple to get code designed for it and would show off the vision well.

Imagine recognizing the patterns and punching to hit the opponent.  Putting the Gyros close together to block, and moving them to either left or right to dodge.

Its an awesome game idea that would be a perfect game.

It could also be turned into a kick'n online game, as two people are boxing eachother actually dodging and weaving and punching.

I hope this is what Nintendo is planning, because I would be on board for this game.

Nintendo Gaming / Star Wars Episode 3 DS
« on: April 14, 2005, 05:10:03 AM »
What do you guys think of the new Star Wars 3 screenshots?

The 3D engine is simple, but I like the stylized look.  It reminds me of the cartoon, mixed with alittle oldschool gaming.  The explosions looked cool.  All in all if they can get the engine to run smooth it could be awesome.

Now, the sidescrolling aspects I am worried about.  One of my favorite games is oldschool Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade, and if its done cool like that then the sidescrolling levels can be awesome.

If not, then I am afraid it won't be.

My biggest fears is that sidescrolling beat'em ups get boring single player.  Multiplayer really enhances the entire experience.

Oh, and lets hope we get some single cart multiplayer deathmatch space fighting.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo is winning this generation?
« on: April 13, 2005, 11:41:12 AM »
The story about profit is interesting.  Nintendo is quite happy to be 3rd if they make money and can pay the bills.  That is what a business is supposed to do.  Period.  It is the fans that are always hyped about winning and losing.

The thing is losing money is sometimes worth it if you are looking at it from an investment point of view.

Microsoft has alot of money lost from their Xbox live, advertising, original console price, buying exclusives and such.  However, they have built a pretty sold reputation from gamers this generation.  Yeah, they bought that reputation, but now that they have it Xbox2 will be more successful.

I think Nintendo is going to try something bold next generation.  Or atleast bold for them.  It will be risky, but I think Nintendo feels if it doesn't step up it will be hurting.  So lets hold off and see what happens.

As for Nintendo winning or losing this generation.  I think its safe to say they didn't lose...or if they did they lost all the way to the bank.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo Press conference
« on: April 13, 2005, 10:54:41 AM »
Ian:  People usually do not think like that unless they are totally pestimestic.  If you show someone a vision then they are going to start to dream with you.  Yeah, Nintendo hasn't fully given us our dreams with the DS, but it is a seperate issue than the revolution.

If Nintendo gives us demos and shows us its Revolution, we will dream with them yet again.  Unless, Nintendo's revolution is centered around a touchscreen...then we might have doubt.  But, we know Revoultion's controller is not touchscreen based.

This E3 is important most likely there won't be another E3 before the systems are out.  Microsoft will supposedly have the Xbox2 out this year, and Sony supposedly early next year.

Nintendo needs to show all its cards, and they need to hype it up.  They need to get consumers excited about Nintendo again, and then they need to make the competition worry.

7941
If Nintendo uses that touch technology I would bet they will also be using Gyroscope technology...it just seems like the only way to fully benefit from the technology.

I would also predict Nintendo will create an all in one controller.  Meaning.  I bet Nintendo will try to incorporate a microphone into the controller, gyroscopes, analog controllers and such.

I hope that we have 1 analog stick, trackball (in place of the other analog stick) a trackpad might work, and two analog stick buttons, last a microphone.  Of course there would be regular buttons.

IAN SANE:  Actually if you remember E3 with the DS the press was pretty positive.  Everybody loved what they saw, and was excited to see what Nintendo will deliver on launch and beyond.  The problem is that Nintendo hasn't delivered many games that completely show off the DS yet.

The have some really good games, but no killer app.  It wasn't the E3 with the tech demos that are currently fueling the bad press.

Actually, I think the DS E3 model would be perfect for this new revolution.  Have demos that prove this new concept is better than the competition.  It doesn't have to be graphically superior, if the concept is truly about control.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo Press conference
« on: April 12, 2005, 08:32:21 AM »
Ian I totally agree.  It really depends on what you have and how you can compete.  Sega did a great move by announcing their system is even out right now with the Saturn.  The problem was that Sony had a better counter move.

Those counter moves can't happen if you don't have anything truly special to show or something big enough to counter.  It is a risk.  No matter where you start there is some sort of positioning to gain.

Microsoft debuting on MTV may make the industry upset, but who cares.  Its like the President going to the alternative media instead of the mainstream press to deliver his message.  The mainstream press is whining and complaining, but in truth it benefited the President to do it that way.  Microsoft skipping the middle man means its name is out not just to hardcore gamers, but anyone that watches MTV.  Its a big deal, and something they can market and fill with even more celebrity praise.  Microsoft needs this because they are going to be the first to launch and they need to start the hype machine now.

Sony is in an easier position.  As it is in first place right now, and from all reports they have the most powerful next generation system.  All they have to do is present their vision and the power of the system, and explain why its worth it.  They don't have to defend their first place position.  Afterall, Sony believes they deserved it.  They earned it.  Going first on Monday at the trade show benefits Sony by taking the wind out of Microsoft.  If the two systems are really similar then Sony's more powerful system could overshadow Microsoft.

Now, here comes Nintendo in last place.  They have the most to prove.  Specially with all the hype and comments on the Revolution.  Basically Nintendo has stated:  "Graphics are nice, but if its all the same then why bother.  We have something truly special.  It is beyond just a graphics upgrade...its a Revolution."

Being last helps Nintendo with this.  They can have that You've seen what the others have, let us show you the best.  However, Nintendo really has to deliver.  Nintendo can't just deliver at the press conference, they also have to deliver on the showroom floor.  Because, as Ian said.  They have 2 strikes against them in the public eye.  It doesn't hurt them that much yet, but with the PSP out there too, if Nintendo loses the portable market then they lose their money maker.

So question is what can Nintendo show to truly wow at their press conference?

1)Video clips from their new animation projects could be cool.
2)Revolution Video, and Concept explaination, perhaps even a demo.
3)Gameboy Next.  Tell people its a year away, but let them see it...take some of that thunder away from the PSP.
4)Present a new image for Nintendo.  Don't change that all age classic Nintendo entertainment, just repackage it.
5)Last, show some of the final Gamecube games, but let the showroom present those gems...instead focus purely on the future of Nintendo.  Make it bright and shiny.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo Press conference
« on: April 12, 2005, 04:55:24 AM »
Well there is risk in both.

Being first then you get to really WOW the entire press first.  They set the benchmark for the show.

Being last allows you to one up the others if you have a product that can diminish that original WOW factor.  However, if your product is more of the same, or doesn't stand out then the press will be bored because they already saw that yesterday.

The only way Nintendo can make being last beneficial to them is if they have multiple speechs planned.  They can go with one, but if they see Sony's and Microsoft's speech and decide they need to show more Revolution then they can go with Speech 2.  Or if they decide Sony and Microsoft are lacking in demos and game announcements then perhaps Speech 3 would be best.

I just really don't think you plan for big press conferences in that manner though, because it is so costly to put on.

7945
I just watched the Falcon demo.  It was very interesting...and yet I am left baffled on how to actually create a controller for that for gaming.  If that is what Nintendo is trying to do.  The technology would work really well actually with Gyros, but how does it give you feel within the controller?

How could you get traditional buttons to work with the controller?

Obviously, they have somebody working already with them.  They made mention to that, but who and what is left unanswered.  Could it be Nintendo?  Hmmm...

Time will tell.  I wish E3 is now.

If Nintendo is truly using that for a controller they could get away with just the concept and a few tech demos.

7946
Ian:  Yeah I didn't write that well.  What I meant was that the old controller would be useless with the new games.  I don't care if they design the new one to where it would work with old games.

The idea is that it would split the market for a time between old controllers and new controllers.  Yeah it would just be a temporary thing, but it would help.

7947
One last thing.  Nintendo needs more than just one element new and revolutionary about the controller.  They need it to be big enough to notice immediately, and something that would be hard and expensive for Microsoft and Sony to copy.  Something that if they did copy would require people to buy completely new controllers, that may not work as well with the older games, creating a split market.

7948
Hmmm.  I like Nemo's track ball idea...with the Gyros for the Lefthand movement.  Take the buttons out of that controller though.  Or limit it to a trigger and another.

If you were using Gyros for the main manipulation for movement, the perfect secondary manipulation would be a Trackball over an analog stick.  Here is why.  You could stop moving the trackball without it snapping back into position like that analog stick would.  It would provide a more fluid and smooth control as well.  However, you would want to make sure the trackball wasn't too loose, and was able to spin too fast.

The floating analog stick on the side is a great idea, for games that need it.

The biggest problem with this setup is no traditional D-pad.  Do we really need that though?
The only games that absolutely have to have that are fighting games, and really it isn't a total bust not to have it.

On the other side of the controller, I would want a very traditional button layout.  4 buttons and a trigger button.  If you want to have another floating analog stick, then I am cool with that.

Last, I want the controllers to be able to connect and be comfortable.  Just in case the games need a more traditional control style.  Gryos can be used, but I really don't want them used for crazy stuff like swinging swords.  I just want them used for a more natural movement input device.

7949
I do like the idea of a track ball, but I wonder about Microsoft's controller.  The positioning of the trackball is almost pointless...how do you use the trackball and other items easily.

I would have rather perfered the trackball taking the place of the 2nd analog stick.  I never was a big fan of two analog sticks...it forced you to play with fewer buttons, or made you juggle between movement and button control...the trackball would do the same thing, but perhaps be more natural.

A trackball would be great for some games, but it isn't special or revolutionary.  It is actually pretty boring.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: What type of games should the Rev launch with?
« on: April 08, 2005, 11:01:21 AM »
Ian Sane:  Super Smash Brother Melee sold incredibly well.  So did Super Mario Sunshine.  Those franchises are on the list of games that must be there.

I think a brand new game, or a resurrection of a great old game would be terrific though to add spice to the revolution.

I would love a Pilot Wings Revolution.  Though, I would want the level progression to go from flight school to stunt flying to military dogfights.  The original Super Nintendo Pilot Wings had that great last level rescue mission.  That needs to be resurrected again.

Other concepts would be welcome.  Though I would question Nintendo's ability to create a fully actualized new franchise for the Revolution launch.  I would rather them develop exciting franchises and release them early to let new stuff come later.

Why would existing franchises be easier to release in the timeframe?  They already have an existing feel, concept, and design principles.  The art direction is usually decided and the world is most complete.  A new game would feel rushed.
