Well, you added the the wink after I posted my comment, but it doesn't matter either way because I was joking. You can say what you want, I don't care. Most of my posts are sarcastic or tongue-in-cheek in nature. We're on an internet message board. Who takes any of this crap personally?

Rub it in... Throw some salt in his eyes while you're at it. Jeez.

And I seem to have misspelled "RPG." I once misspelled the letter "A" on a school paper too.

I like the MiiRG idea. It'd be cool if you could create the storyline and towns and dungeons yourself. Yeah, kind of like RPG maker, but perhaps easier to work with.

PSP outsold Wii. Is that because Nintendo can't get them out fast enough?

And PS3 Gundam is number. That'll last until next week maybe.

Mark Rein isn't as publicly critical of Nintendo nowadays either. Still, highly critical, but not as critical. He used to fly of the f-ing handle. Maybe he toned it down just in case. I'm not expecting anything to change anytime soon, but it's always better to not to say anything bad when given a choice.

It wasn't even really a pot shot. Reggie was responding to the crowd. He could have done worse. God knows Sony and Microsoft have (who seemingly go out of their way to trash the competition). He could have palmed Phil Harrison's face and pushed it away. Or Miyamoto could have crawled behind Harrison and have Reggie push him.

Seriously, this is so retarded.

If you want to talk about what's really retarded, think about how riled up you're getting about this. Jeez.... Such hostility. Chill pills for everyone... And before you assume that I know nothing about Trauma Center, please keep in mind that I work in a video store and I've played almost everything on Wii. By "almost" I mean, I'm not wasting my free rentals on Barnyard or Avatar.

Yes, it gets hard, but skill and difficulty don't define what a game is. Who says a non-game can't be hard? A pre-school difficulty level isn't necessary to draw the non-gamer in.  A non-gamer doesn't know Trauma Center will drive them up a wall, but they might pick it up and give it a chance because it's not like anything they've seen before. They might like it and they might want to put the game down. At the same time, it might make anyone put the game down. The important thing is getting them to try it. These non-traditional games are meant to attract different audiences (though they're not supposed to be exclusively appealing to non-gamers). The design of Trauma Center tends to elicit a second glance from non-gamers because of it's different.

Quote

why do I have to define non-game if you are the one making the damn claim? YOU define it, and say why you think Trauma Center is a non-game.

I did define it and I think you should too because the very definition of what a non-game is at the heart of this discussion. If you think my definition is wrong, then say why you think it's wrong and part of that is defining what a non-game is yourself.

Sorry, son. You made the claim first. You have to ante up the evidence. "It's a medical simulation" isn't going to cut it. What makes it a non-game? Try to answer with more than one sentence.

I don't really need more than one sentence. Everything about Trauma Center makes it a non-game. If you really want to get into it, first define what a "non-game" is because the term itself is elusive. I tend to think that it's a "game" that reaches beyond established genres and/or is created with people who don't normally play videogames in mind. That's a vague description but it's also subjective. Your definition of what a non-game is may differ. Trauma Center fits into my definition of what a non-game is. So I throw it back to you, what about Trauma Center doesn't make it a non-game?

Where is the wave of companies who started not putting out their traditional games in favor of non games? I would say there aren't any.

I agree. Not even Nintendo has done that. Games like Zelda, Mario, Smash, Metroid etc still seem like a priority to them. Nintendo isn't going to stop putting out their big traditional games in favor of non-games. I think we're seeing companies release more non-games even though the focus remains on traditional games.

Just curious, what companies, other than Nintendo, have started putting out 'non-games'?

Nintendo is just credited for leading the current charge to capture the non-gamer audience and make those kinds of games part of their business model. A few companies have released "non-games" over the years even if they were probable never meant to be a priority for those companies. Sega released Seaman years ago and Konami's DDR series isn't necessarily a gamer's game though many gamers now enjoy it. Recently, Capcom has Phoenix Wright. Atlus publishes Trauma Center and Touch Detective.

Many games have great art direction, but I don't consider games art.

If I had to choose, I'd say Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are pretty artsy. There's just something about those titles. They're so simple yet they evoke such strong emotions.

Crab juice... hahahahahaha... I love that episode.

And Sony came out strong at GDC, but they're still selling a $600 console. Sony's Home isn't changing that nor will it convince people change their minds about whether or not to get a PS3.

All I wanted out of GDC was a new Brawl trailer. That's looking like a major no-go so I'm going back to bed now.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Gamestop observations
« on: March 06, 2007, 09:13:42 PM »
I haven't been to a Gamestop in a while, but I would guess Wii was moved to the back because they don't have any trouble selling them. People likely come in looking for one all the time. Putting PS3 in the front is Gamestop's way of increasing awareness of the product in an effort to sell PS3s. Retailers don't really make money on hardware, but if the hardware doesn't sell then the software won't either. Wii doesn't need to sell any better than it has been for them to make money on it.

And also, Gamestop sucks. What the hell were you doing in there or even looking around? Go buy a pizza or something and keep the hell away from that evil corporation before they end up buying you out and investing in your mom's stocks, effectively taking over her operations.

What happened to Quintet? They were awesome back in the day.

Ignore the total mindf*ck story of Sons of Liberties and it's a better game than Twin Snakes. The problem with Twin Snakes is that Silicon Knights and Konami didn't redesign the levels to take advantage of the MGS2 gameplay mechanics. It made the game so much easier. On the bright side, they somehow made Grey Fox 10000% more badass than he already was.

I didn't play much of MGS3. I watched a friend play through some of it. A 30 minute boss battle? What the f*ck? And then there's the boss that releases the dogs with bees in their mouth so when they bark they shoot bees at you... actually, he just controls bees (or hornets) and shoots them at you which really, isn't that much less ridiculous.

Voice actors probably never get a call from Nintendo, it's sad I wish there would be more voice acting in Nintendo games.  I think I wouldn't mind cutting FMV's for voice acting (good voice acting), maybe.

I was just thinking that as I was playing some WarioWare eariler. I would've liked more voice acting to make the short cut-scenes even more absurd and hilarious than they already were. Wario is a pretty ridiculous character. In fact, the whole WarioWare crew is pretty out there. It'd be nice to hear them more.

I'm expecting a new trailer at GDC next week. If Nintendo wants to create even more buzz for the title, they'll show Sonic (granted he makes the cut). Other than 3rd party additions, I'd like to see some of those WarioWare characters make it. Mona and Young Cricket would make interesting additions.

Too many characters deserve to be in the game more than Snake. I thought that was settled ages ago.

Anyway, I hope there's a music track selecter. Zelda Theme playing on Planet Zebes. That'd be a pretty cool option.

The way I see it Wii won't get every game due to its limited hardware, but it can't get worse than it was the last two generations. Wii will get some great games and I don't have enough money to buy or the time to play them all anyway. It's a shame that not every game developers want to make are possible they way developers want them to be, but I think Wii will have more than enough solid titles to satisfy most people.... well, eventually.

Settling with Immersion doesn't necessarily mean Sony will release a new rumble enabled Sixaxis. I believe Immersion wanted Sony to stop manufacturing controllers that infringed on their their patented technology. Sony was able to suspend that order pending appeals. So they finally gave in. What did everyone expect them to do? They still make $$$ on PS2 and you can't sell one without a controller. It probably would have cost more money to redesign the Dual Shock 2 without rumble than just settle with Immersion.

I don't think this really affects PS3 at all. Sony will likely stick to their guns and keep Sixaxis rumble free. Imagine how much money that would cost to not only commision Immersion to create a tilt and rumble capable controller, but to pay up for the license as well. Rumble is nice and all, but I don't think it's really worth the trouble for Sony to implement it into their controllers now.

As for the Mii/Achievement copying, it's not exactly the same and it doesn't change the fact that you still have to pony up $600. Seems like a fun feature, but it still doesn't justify anything, price and otherwise. You can get mad about Sony's lack of originality or you can sip some lemonade, make a Mii or two, and be content that you spent considerably less while having just as much fun (or possibly more).

What the....

I think Nintendo's proved that they don't necessarily need 3rd parties in the console space to continue as a console maker. However, Nintendo does need them to continue expanding. They might lock up the new gamer crowd, but the existing gamer who either hates Nintendo games or abandoned them years ago won't be buying Wii for Mario or Zelda (though they might dig Wii Sports). And it goes both ways. 3rd parties need console makers too. That's how the relationship should work. It's mutual.

At best it's a clever way to have mouse functionality on a portable gaming system and at worst it's use in games is forced.

I agree with that to a certain degree. Many games tend to shoehorn touchscreen controls that make no sense. For example, New Super Mario Bros. used the touchscreen in the most assinine way especially when (I believe) X and Select did nothing (and A, maybe, was an alternate jump). On the other hand, it works great for Brain Age and kind of for Hunters (if that's your preference).

I think the real legacy of DS is that it forced everyone to think differently, even if you didn't have to. Nintendo made people look back at the core of gaming and showed them that games can go beyond holding a controller with both hands and memorizing various commands. I think they got their point across: Innovation is what is going to (or at least, should) drive the industry.

That's what I've been saying...... though some games are looking pretty great, namely Dragon Quest Swords and No More Heroes. Wii's 3rd party lineup is better than Gamecube's was 5 years ago, but it's still pretty spotty.
