but how would this happen? can you bring a character from one game to another? I see no reason for being able to carry them in your remote like a wii remote because their stats (in attack, defense, etc.) don't differ just because you've played more with them in your game.

I'm a bit confused over what you mean by "carring a character over." I guess I was unclear so allow me to rephrase. If I have the patch, I learn to use a patched Link or Peach. When I go to my friend's house (who doesn't have the patch because he's not connected), I'm at a disadvantage because I'm trying to play as the unpatched Link or Peach. Essentially, that creates 2 different characters. I see that as a problem.

Some people just won't have the patches. Not everyone has high-speed internet (losers....) so you'll end up with some people learning the patched characters and some who don't. How can you have a tournament that way? How do you choose which "version" to use?

The reason why the new SSB is likely to be significantly slower than Melee, according to the SSB community, is due to the "freeze frame" effect having a far longer duration than it did in SSBM.

Ohhhh.... that. Ok, I get it. That's why Marth is such a bastard....

Still, I see that as a balance issue rather than making the game "significantly slower." When someone says "slowing the game down," that could mean anything. The characters jump and run really, really slow in the original. That's very different than Fox rocking my world with this ungodliness.......

Anyway, the game needs bosses. I hate Master Hand. He's just stupid. Of course, with bosses you could have a real story mode... but that's hardly an original idea.

Online matches shouldn't be a problem because if you're playing online, you'll probably have the patches. But if I go to my friend's house and he's not connected, I could be using an unpatched Link or Peach. That creates 2 or more kinds of players due to different patches. Imagine that at tournaments.

I just don't like the idea of patches. I'd rather a game company get it right the first time. Melee might not have been perfect, but I think it's still highly playable 5 years later. If Brawl can be that replayable, I don't think there wuld be any need for patches even if Fox is still ridiculous.

I think Nintendo has a patent on a dual response touch screen. Nintendo patents everything. Anything we could think of is probably patented by the company.

I always figured all the harping about Brawl being slowed down was based on hearsay. I watched the trailers again and they game doesn't appear any slower than Melee. Granted, they were just trailers and most likely not representative of final gameplay.

Does anyone have a link?

And seriously, what does "slowed down" even mean? It's an awfully cryptic statement. What does it refer to exactly? I think we'll have our answer at GDC.

And no to patches. Not every Wii is connected to the internet. Patches would create all sorts of problems.

Oh, the Smash Bros. is balanced/unbalanced debate. I've stated my piece before so I'm not touching this one with a 37 foot pole. 37?! My girlfriend sucked 37 dic.......

I will say this though, based on the trailers (which, admittedly, isn't much to go on anyway), Metaknight is awful fast and appears to have an amazing jump. I wonder how they're going to even that out.

Anyway, I hope the stages are to scale. It's not a major problem; I wouldn't even classify it as a "problem." I'd just like to see the characters to scale with the background.

This woman...sigh. I don't want to say she needs to be fired (as I'm sure she needs a means of support), but they have got to stop letting her talk to people. She needs to be relegated into an office where she makes TPS reports all day and plans the weekly employee birthday party.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of Perrin Kaplan. She's really one of Nintendo's worst PR drones.

It's pretty hard for Nintendo to separate themselves from any possible Manhunt 2 backlash. They not only allowed the game on Wii, but negotiated for it. Rockstar knows what they're getting into by creating the content that they do. This is their game and the responsibility is mainly on their shoulders. However, Nintendo should be a bit more supportive.

At the same time, there's little to no competition on 360 in Japan. Maybe Capcom is hoping that since support for the platform is so limited, they can corner that market with their titles. Hey, I'm not saying it makes sense, just that it might be a possibility.... that or as Smash_Brother said, maybe they're just dumb........

Wii should have more support, but it doesn't. I really can't figure out why.

As far as I know, the creator of Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe, Hideki Kamiya, is still with Capcom. And Keiji Inafune, creator of Mega Man, also created Lost Planet for 360 and it currently working on a Wii game.

The only one who has really left Capcom is Yoshiki Okamoto (Street Fighter). Even Shinji Mikami is still around... guess he didn't cut off his head after RE4 was released on PS2.

The problem with copying the innovator is that you'll always be a step behind. That won't help Sony if Nintendo takes over the market. They'll need to innovate themselves somehow. And (in theory) that will only help the industry.

It'll probably look a lot better in action, especially since you'll rarely see much of the scenery beyond a few seconds anyway.

Another area that I feel we are forgetting is the PSP, there haven't been any big surprises whatsoever for that system, and it is still going downhill, showing me Sony isn't this great "mastermind" that people think they are.

Yet PSP is still getting some killer games. Metal Gear Portable Ops came out not too long ago. Then there's Dracula X Chronicles despite 2 sales duds on PS2 and 5 extremely well-recieved GBA/DS games (which while great, essentially have the same gameplay across the board) as well as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. I don't even want to hear about how the game was announced before DS started raping PSP in sales because SquareEnix could've cancelled the game on PSP and  moved it to PS2.... or even Wii since CC:FF7 looks better than most Wii games out right now anyway.

I think many people undercut Sony's efforts with the first Playstation.

I agree with that. Sheer blind luck couldn't create a monster like the Playstation. They did all the right things when they had to for 2 generations while the competition basically didn't. Nintendo and Sega kind of undid themselves and Microsoft, being the newcomer, didn't have a chance last gen. Nintendo just happened to be run well-enough to stay profitable. Go them.

10015
Ah, so you have. I just posted what I remembered reading while bored at work. Touche.

Still, I've noticed the rising level of BS in Sony's (and, to a slighly lesser degree, Microsoft's) PR. I don't remember them sounding as terrible as they've sounded recently. How do you twist Wii domination into something bad? Instead, I'd rather hear about what they plan on doing about it. A possible solution is far more promising than corporate mudlsinging. Calling Wii a "gimmick" or a "toy" doesn't inspire confidence in Sony. The effect is supposed to be downplaying the competition's success, but it doesn't come off that way. It makes them look bad because it suggests panic, as if that's the best response they could come up with. That guy is a PR drone. He's failing horribly at what he's paid for.

Nintendo was really up there a few years back. Their BS levels were through the roof. George Harrison was especially notorious for being full of it though he's slowed down. Can't say the same about Perrin Kaplan......

I'm not a graphics whore or anything, but I think its fairly obvious that most games so far have been extremely lazy(graphically) or just ports of existing games, and not even ports of the most graphically enhanced version of those games, but ports from the PS2 version.

Yeah... I know.... It's looking up though. Metroid Prime 3 is going to blow our faces off and that shouldn't be too far off... or at least it better not be considering it was supposed to be a launch title... then not a launch title... then a launch title again... then a "sometime after March 2007" release.

If anyone wants to read something funny, go buy the latest EGM (or at least rip open the plastic at Barnes and Noble). There's this long interview with some Sony PR guy (I'm not sure who it is). Just to give you an idea of what to expect. He basically blames the failure of UMD on movie companies. Some of the quotes were down right out of control. At some point, EGM should have stopped the interview and punched this guy in the nads.

I've been highly critical of Nintendo's PR over the years, but Sony and Microsoft seem to have caught up and then some. Reggie, as president of NOA, is also a PR guy. His job, among many other things, is to make Nintendo look shiny. I've read dozens of his interviews over the past few years and at least he doesn't sound like a complete bullsh*tter. I'm not Reggie maniac, but I admit he's fairly honest for someone whose job it is to stretch the truth. These Sony and Microsoft guys though... when they aren't mudslinging, they're just outright lying to people.

EDIT: Yeah, read bustin98's post.

All the same, it was much different than Sony's errors with the PS3.

Exactly. The difference being the reliance on 3rd parties. As we've seen, Nintendo has been able to support an entire console almost entirely by themselves. There's reason in my mind that Sony can't do the same. They have a few strong brands such as God of War and Gran Turismo, but they clearly aren't established enough to support a whole console. Should they alienate 3rd parties as Nintendo had, they most certainly would be screwed beyond all reason.

I think that's the real difference here. Sony's mistakes affect 3rd parties less directly. I'd say Sony's biggest problem is the financially crippling price of PS3 which they're mostly absorbing themselves while placing the rest of the load on consumers.

10019
It was more than just cartridges. Nintendo just became difficult to deal with. The hardware architecture was atrocious and licensing fees were significantly higher than Sony's. Then, there was that whole "Dream Team" of developers Hiroshi Yamauchi wanted to put together, further alienating 3rd parties. We can all agree that cartridges played a huge role, but that wasn't all Nintendo got wrong.

10020
I usually see a PS3 ad or two whenever I watch tv which isn't often. They're all weird. I don't know what happened. The PSP had pretty cool ads.

I don't think Sony's made enough mistakes. We still haven't seen the dropoff in support that Nintendo experienced between SNES and N64. Sony has done some boneheaded moves so far, but they haven't totally alienated 3rd parties like Nintendo did. That's why Nintendo has too keep their guard up and keep scoring small victories like Guitar Hero and Manhunt 2... and even Dragon Quest IX. Yeah, it's on DS, but at least it's not on PS3.

I'm not discounting Belmont. I don't know where that "rule" about 1 character per third party originated from. Nintendo, Sora, and whoever else is involved with Brawl can do as they please.

And Viewtiful Joe would be awesome, but I'm curious as to how they'd do his character justice. Then again, I'm no game designer. If they wanted to, I'm sure they could pull it off.

I understand the basics of the fiscal year, but when given that estimate, there's no telling when a game is going to come out. That's why I say "ehhh...." when I hear announcement like that. There isn't much to go by. Guitar Hero could see the light of day anywhere between this coming April and next April.

I was playing Melee yesterday and a few things came to mind.

I don't like that pressing up on the analog stick makes you jump. It makes the slightly up+A attacks are harder to pull off. There are 2 jump buttons. It just seems extraneous.

If there's a Belmont in the game, the Castlevania stage could be the broken staircase leading to the Dracula's throne room. I better see a damn Belmont in the game....

Each character has modified versions of their original costumes (i.e. Peach's dress is more detailed). I'd like to see every character have a completely original Smash-only costume. I guess I just don't like the color-palettes.

I'd like to see Arthur from Ghouls and Ghosts. Too bad Maximo is out since he was PS2-only and the games sold so poorly. I liked that character.

Physics could use a lot of work.

Newcomer: Mii. I'm sure someone brought else mentioned this here. It's so obvious.

I bring this up whenever I talk about what I want to see in a Smash Bros. game. Create-A-Stage. Send them to a friend's over WiiConnect24.

The Gamecrazy guys are always playing Guitar Hero. I haven't tried it, but it's not really my type of game. A Wii version is still good new though.
