Nintendo Gaming / RE: ign pans nintendo's e3 conf
« on: May 09, 2006, 07:44:53 PM »
I created a monster with this thread...

I'm surprised at all the angst here.  Who cares what the price is, it is almost certanly either 199 or 249, both of which are perfectly reasonable given a modest hardware upgrade, wifi and a hugely complex and likely expensive controller.

The conference blew me away.  The energy in the crowd and onstage was great, the gameplay demos were great, and the tenis game at the end was a lot of fun.  Nintendo is absolutely right to hold on to a few cards, both to keep the hype going, and also to give them some wiggle room should Sony or MS change course last minute.

What the whiners on e3 are missing, and I think people here are too, is that the main point that Nintendo delivered on in spades is their continued dedication to excellent games.  Just look at the boards from the last few months to see that this was absolutely in doubt, with people worried about a cheapening of Metroid, Zelda and a focus on non-games.  Nintendo showed us that they were dead serious about the kind of 4 star game quality we've come to expect from it's flagship hardware, but this time with the energy and innovation that comes from a new control scheme.

If they can pull off metroid, zelda and mario by christmas 2006 then I think they'll be #1 in 2006/2007.

ps - in contrast, Sony showed us their dedication to nothing but frills and hardware horsepower.  Other than the tilt control, we saw nothing innovative in the games at all.  And even the tilt control did not inovate in the game _play_, just how the controller was used.  A joystick already can move a plane in the same manner.

i'm curious how the hands on reviews of the two controllers will stack up over the next few days.

there will always be games that don't turn out...I'd rather see them take a chance on some new ideas then not.  let's see how these turn out before getting pissed eh?

I was hoping for pikmin 3 and mario 128.  I know, mario 128 is probably galaxy, but still I was hoping for something with 128 marios running around

Also, does anyone know if it will play dvd's out of the box? Seems like that was skipped over too.

ign gave a couple of bad reviews to nintendo's e3 preso.  I thought it was great, especially after sony's arrogance.

don't buy it then?

on the 2 versions of zelda -
i'm still not clear as to whether or not this will be two seperate games that you buy, or one game that is playable in both consoles (perhaps one box, with 2 discs).  I'm hoping the later.  If it is the later, this shouldn't be a huge surprise.  Although it would have been nicer had they released zelda or the new paper marion in the early summer to tide us over.  On the other hand, ds-lite could fill that roll.

funny - I was actually thinking there weren't many (any?) non-gamer games.  I guess the sports games and maybe wario ware?  But in general, these games seemed to have the same marketing target as the cube games did.  Maybe we'll see cooking/conducting stuff come out later, maybe as side games.

i think it's real -

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/e3_2006/wii/controller.html

maybe the gc controller for n64 games?

109
it wouldn't surprise me if mp3 is the same engine, but new levels and different control.  being a launch title, they probably didn't retool the graphics so much to take advantage of the better hardware.

ian - graphics looked gc * 1.5  to me, not as good as sony and ms but better than gc. about what I expected.  also, I agree 100% that gc graphics are good enough now to feel emersed in a 3d environment, more realism just doesn't add that much.

red steel looked amazing though, come one.

111
wow - new mario - why didn't they show it at e3? is the gc too embarrasing

listen to what people are telling you - watch for yourself and then decide.  we've had enough nailbiting leading up to this to last a life time, now we have real hands on experience.  also check out the ign red steel video, it's amazing.

seeing is believing.

Did you guys all see the F1 PS3 PSP connectivity features? Hook up your $250 PSP and you get a REAR VIEW look at the race. Pressing L1 just isn't as exciting when you can look at all the action simultaniously on your PSP!

haha, I didn't miss that.  $250 for a mirror. WOW!

I also didn't miss the "sound of one hand clapping" enthousiasm through out the entire preso.  Sony looked like they were on their heals today.

my two cents -
i have no idea what is meant by 6 degrees of freedom/axis whatever.  what I saw in the demo was only xyz axis movement (actually, the flying seemed to me more focused to two planes).  anyway, this didn't seem to do much more than a analogue stick already does.

most important was the LAG.  from what I could gather in the video, the controller acted basically like an anologue stick in the sense that it only sends directional movement, ie lean this much, etc.

the wii controller, in contrast seems to be more like a mouse, in that it is sending location.  a big difference, for anyone who likes first person shooters on the pc can attest.  by sending location, the response is instant, you move (mouse/wiimote) accross space x units, and the character/gun/sword moves immediately.  by contrast a joystick take s time, because it is not sending location, it is sending, "push the gun/sword/etc. x amount" and the result is you are accelerating more than you are directly moving.  in the end the imersion is lost, and of course, tennis, cooking, fishing, drums, swords are impossible.

to me it looks like a cheap rip off as well, and I don't see too many games using it.

one last point.  this looks to be worse than having done nothing in one sense.  reviewers now have something to compare the two systems on where the wii will have a clear advantage.  before today, sony and microsoft had a clear out in saying, 'power is more important, the wiimote is too radical for gamers'.  now however, sony has validated nintendo, and every review will have mention of the fact that wii executes the control flawlessly while the new dual shock does not.  it is a reverse of the previous situation, where every review of the wii would mention that cpu/gpu wise it was less powerful than the 360/ps3.

I predict nintendo pulling out a ds style win here.  close match up in the us, with advantages world wide, and run away success building in japan.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:New Reggie Interview

There's no point for all this secrecy. Sony and MS aren't going to copy the Rev because they think it's lame and don't consider old fuddy-duddy Nintendo to be a threat.

on the other hand - sony still hasn't revealed their controller yet, so it's not entirely irrational for nintendo to keep their cards close to the chest.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:psp & ps2 were also marketed to non-gamers
« on: February 05, 2006, 07:43:32 AM »
ok - so the gameboy advance, as a gaming pure play has and continues to succeed (in North America, where the ds has taken longer to pick up the market).  I would attribute that to demand for older games from the NES, but that's just an opinion and just as good/bad as saying it succeeded through being a gameing pure play (or for hardcores, as ian said).

but given that, I haven't seen any disagreement that Sony's non-gamer strategy has been wildly successful, in fact eating into Nintendo's market in both cases.  DS has done quite a bit better than the psp, but the psp, for a first try has done fairly well.  Sony is not backing away from this either, with Blue Ray and the Cell pushing multi media, Sony is emphasising this even more than with the PS2.

I am arguing that it would be a huge risk not to target a non-gamer market.  In essence by asking them to do this, you are asking Ninty to further isolate themselves with a strategy that has only worked for one system (in the current era) and has been a near disaster for the console which has a huge impact on Nintendo's mindshare.

According to this - http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=601547 ps2 sales have outmatched the gba, which I think is further testament to the non-gamer strategy.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: psp & ps2 were also marketed to non-gamers
« on: February 03, 2006, 11:18:55 AM »
The thing is - when you make an investment to attract non-games, or non hard core gamers (let's assume for the sake of argument this is the same set of people), which I think we all agree that both Nintendo and Sony (and to some extent Microsoft) are actively doing, you are going to risk losing the purist hard core gamers.
In Sony's case, they are doing so on the hardware side.  Since they do not create first party games (that I'm aware of) at all, their compromise is to make the hardware more expensive to attract non-gaming buyers with multimedia features.  This equates to a tax for anyone interested _only_ in gaming.
From a cost perspective, Nintendo's approach is similar, but instead of taxing the hardware, they invest a portion (for Brain Training, let's say tiny portion) of their development budget towards attracting non-gamers.  True, they are not focusing 100% on the hard core's, but let's face it, that is a losing strategy and one that no one else is following at all.

DS has 'won' in the same way that ps2 won.  By gaining huge amounts of mindshare by selling features (games or dvd viewing) that is popular outside the core market.  This tailwind helps the hardcore gamers down the road when 3rd parties get attracted, and Nintendo and Sony are able to invest more into their product because of it's success.

I agree with your points Ian, that this will cost Nintendo some, and will be a risk, but it is important to point out that this is a risk that everyone else is taking in their own ways, and further one that has shown to be a good model for Nintendo in the ds.

Also, I agree with the other arguments, that these non-games eventually have better tie in rates than movies because in reality they are games, and they allow the new market to become comfortable with the gaming experience.

Nintendo Gaming / psp & ps2 were also marketed to non-gamers
« on: February 02, 2006, 02:35:18 PM »
Here's a thought,
the psp, the ps2 and the xbox to some extent were all marketed at non-gamers.  My understanding is that the ps2 was outragiously successful in getting people to buy the system for the sole purpose of watching dvd's (the players of which were expensive at the time).  Today, the psp continues strong sales (though not as strong as the ps2 was in its segment) also becuase of the non-game movie viewing feature.

Obviously, with the ps2 this didn't turn anyone off.  Quite the contrary.  3rd parties were much more likely to develop games for a system with strong unit sales, and this brought in more gamers.  We see the same with the ds where the so called 'non-games' or games focused on non traditional gamer markets bring up the unit sales, and give some tail wind to those games that are.

So I don't really see any drawback to the rev following this same strategy.  The only difference being that instead of focusing on multi-media (music, video) non-games, it is focusing on different types of games in order to expand the market.

Seems reasonable to me...
