TalkBack / Thorium Wars: Attack of the Starfighter Review
« on: August 26, 2014, 07:46:33 AM »

Do a Bore-ll Roll

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/38366/thorium-wars-attack-of-the-starfighter-review

Thorium Wars: Attack of the Skyfighter attempts to fill the void left by the lack of a new Star Fox game. As a sequel to the DSi-Ware game Thorium Wars, it boasts full-scale aerial-combat with a variety of different aircrafts and levels. While the game occasionally shines with its fluid framerate and satisfying combat, the slow, clunky controls, boring level design, and graphical glitches make it hard to recommend.

The story is as generic as it gets: an alien race is bent on destroying the human race and taking over the galaxy, and it’s up to you, and only you, to stop them. Each mission is presented in pages of plain text. There’s no voice acting or character art, so the writing is just as generic as the overall story. However, you do get a variety different aircrafts, all having their own strengths and weaknesses. All three of the aircrafts felt exactly the same in terms of speed, so there was no reason to pick a ship other than the Indra, which has the highest armor and firepower.

The levels themselves are your basic level designs: red deserts, frozen caverns, a city filled with skyscrapers, and more. None of them feel very inspired, but they all look nice for what they are… most of the time. Since the level design is so dull, it’s really easy to get lost when certain areas have more than one route. Because everything looks the same, it’s easy to accidently backtrack. And due to the extremely large turning radius and no way to easily make U-Turns or sharp turns, you end up having to make long treks back to open areas just to turn around, or else you’ll risk taking damage or dying due to crashing into the walls.

From a technical standpoint, the game runs at a constant 60 frames-per-second, and it does feel really good to blow stuff up. I’ve not had any trouble locking onto or hitting enemies. Though if you run into an enemy, it’s a one-hit kill, which makes playing the game quite annoying as it barely gives you any windows of opportunity to avoid ramming into someone if you see them coming.

In the end, there’s nothing in this game that isn’t done better by other games in the genre. A generic story, generic writing, generic enemies, generic music, repetitive objectives and level design, and no multiplayer modes make this game feel like a waste of time and effort. If you’re itching for an aerial-combat game on 3DS, stick with Star Fox 64 3D, or try and hunt down a copy of Star Fox Command for DS. Otherwise, give this game a pass.

Even Nintendo isn't safe from pre-order incentives.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38225/hyrule-warriors-offers-classic-costumes-as-pre-order-bonus

Hyrule Warriors will have special costumes if you pre-order the game from select retailers.

At the end of tonight's Nintendo Direct for Hyrule Warriors, Nintendo revealed various costumes for Link and Zelda, only accessible through pre-ordering the game. The costumes are taken from various 3D Zelda titles, including Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword. Those who register the game on Club Nintendo will also be getting alternate costumes for Ganondorf, inspired by his outfits in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess.

It is unknown which retailers will be participating in the pre-order bonuses, nor if Nintendo will be selling these costumes seperately on the eShop, but we will keep you updated when we receive more information

TalkBack / New Star Fox Title Coming to Wii U in 2015

Barrel rolling for joy.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37694/new-star-fox-title-coming-to-wii-u-in-2015

A new Star Fox game has been revealed to be in development for the Wii U.

In an interview with Time Magazine, which was quickly pulled, Miyamoto talked about the latest entry in the Star Fox series. While story details weren't mentioned, he did go a little in-depth with how the game controls. Players will be able to aim by using the GamePad's motion controls, while moving the ship with the analog sticks, as well as pulling off special manuevers such as the infamous barrel roll. You will also be able to transform into a Landmaster tank for ground battles

We have yet to learn any other details, so we will be updating this story once more information comes out, which will likely be during today's Digital Event.

TalkBack / Mario Maker to be Revealed at E3?
« on: June 05, 2014, 01:56:00 PM »

Could we be seeing Nintendo's answer to LittleBigPlanet?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/37616/mario-maker-to-be-revealed-at-e3

A photo has supposedly leaked out from Nintendo's E3 booth, and has revealed a possible new game entitled Mario Maker.

Judging from the photo provided, the game involves having full control of the assets from the original Super Mario Bros., and being able to make your own levels by placing pits, enemies, blocks, and more wherever you like. It is unclear if they intend to include other Mario titles.

Other character art seen in the picture, such as Kirby, Animal Crossing Villager and Pikachu, are reminiscent of Smash Bros. character art, a game that all three characters are confirmed to be in. Nintendo has yet to issue an official statement.

TalkBack / I've Got to Run Review
« on: June 04, 2014, 06:00:00 AM »

I musn't run away!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/37597/ive-got-to-run-review

I’ve Got to Run is an endless runner games in a sea of endless runner games. What started out as a modern take on arcade-style score-chasers ended up being one of the most popular genres on mobile devices. They tend to work well on those platforms due to the fact that they can be played in short bursts when you’re on the go, and are usually free to download. While I’ve Got To Run has the “short burst” part right, its severe lack of content makes it hard to justify the purchase.

I’ve Got to Run features three game modes: Endless Classic, Endless Double, and Endless Special. All three modes play very similarly, only with a few small differences: Double gives you a double-jump ability, and Special places various speed-up and speed-down items within the level. Each mode has you controlling Roy the Marshmallow Boy, our hero, as he makes his way through randomly-generated platforms. The only ability you have is to jump, and once you fall in a pit, it instantly resets your score. I would say that it sends you back to the beginning of the level, but it honestly feels like there is none. Each mode has one singular background image that never moves, and all the platforms have the exact same design and pattern, leaving no sense of progression.

What the game also lacks is any sense of individuality whatsoever. There’s no way to control the height or length of your jump, nor are there any sound effects or audio feedback within the game whatsoever. It feels like one of those early 2000s internet banner ads that had an extremely simple game to entice you to sign up for a chance to win a Caribbean cruise: soulless and unrewarding. The game does keep track of your high scores, but only if you manually save the game from the main menu, which shouldn’t be a big deal, but the fact that the game can’t auto-save is a bit odd.

Overall, I cannot recommend I’ve Got to Run when there are so many better alternatives out there, especially when most of them are free. If there was some incentive to keep playing beyond ten minutes, which is more than enough time to experience everything the game has to offer, it might warrant a purchase. As it stands, the only thing this game was running was out of ideas.

TalkBack / CastleStorm Review
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:58:00 PM »

Long live the Queen.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/37044/castlestorm-the-warrior-queen-dlc-review

Last month, we were treated to From Outcast to Saviour; a short but sweet expansion to the Wii U eShop game CastleStorm. While both the game and expansion came out way later than on other consoles, it was still nice to see Zen Studios put the effort into porting it over. Now that The Warrior Queen, the latest and possibly last DLC expansion, has finally released, the Wii U is completely caught up with other platforms. Although The Warrior Queen still has its charm, it plays and feels a bit too similar to the previous expansion and fails to make as big of an impact.

The story involves a young viking named Freia who breaks out of jail in order to recruit her fellow vikings to exact revenge against Chief Reinhorn, her captor. Along the way, players will run into various characters from the main game, and at one point the narrative crosses over with the story going on in From Outcast to Savior. Other than that, the only differences you’ll really find here are slightly tweaked missions and variations of weapons that we’ve already used in the base game and the previous expansion.

There are a couple new items and spells, such as the Ghost Army, which allow you to take down quite a few enemies, and Arctic Snowballs which allow you to freeze enemies in place for a limited amount of time. I found these fun to use, but I barely had any opportunities to use them. As with the first expansion, once you get the ultimate spells and items in the campaign, you’re put into a situation where you can’t use them unless you go back to previous scenarios.

Thankfully, as with From Outcast to Savior, you can use this new Viking Elite class in the other modes of the game. So if you manage to find someone to play with, or just want to grind for upgrades, you’ll have an extra way of doing it, which might make this new expansion more appealing. Otherwise, this is just more of the same if you’re only interested in the single player.

TalkBack / Star Wars Pinball Review
« on: March 30, 2014, 03:22:00 PM »

Insert ham-fisted Star Wars pun/reference here.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/36999/star-wars-pinball-balance-of-the-force-dlc-review

When it comes to DLC on the Wii U, Zen Studios is one of the few third parties that follow through with additional content, even if it takes a few months after its release on other consoles to do it. That being said, Star Wars Pinball: Balance of the Force was worth the wait. Sporting three new tables themed after Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader, and iconic ships such as TIE-Fighters and X-Wings, this DLC pack makes the already great pinball sim even better.

Return of the Jedi is based on the movie of the same name, and is modeled after the forests of Endor. It’s probably the most basic of the three tables, but it’s not badly designed or frustrating to play on by any means. There are plenty of charming references and dot-matrix style scenes from the movie, which thankfully also present on all three of these tables.

The other two tables are definitely way more interesting. Starfighter Assault lets you choose between siding with the Alliance or the Empire, and depending on which one you choose, you’ll be in control of the respective side’s starships during the various missions. These missions are accessible by getting your ball into a special slot, and come in the form of short arcade-style games like Galaga and Space Invaders. They can be a bit clunky, but were relatively harmless and added some nice variety to the table. There are also some missions involving iconic starships like the Death Star and the Millenium Falcon, so there’s no absence of vehicle fanservice.

By far the best of these three tables was Darth Vader. It has a really cool red and black color scheme with a ton of retro-style sound effects for the various bumpers, slingshots and rollovers. I found it the easiest table to keep the ball in play for extended periods of time, so it was definitely the perfect table to rack up a high score for whichever side you’ve aligned yourself with in the base game. There are also several missions involving Darth Vader, the Emperor and Luke Skywalker, which allow you to crudely play out iconic moments from all three of the original movies. It’s all tied together nicely with the Imperial March playing in the background, which is by far my favorite piece of music from the Star Wars films, and fits the table perfectly.

Overall, I liked these tables even more than the ones that came with the original release, so if you’re itching for more Star Wars themed pinball, I’m happy to say that these do not disappoint. Let’s just hope we don’t need to pull a Jedi Mind Trick on Zen Studios to get them to release the next pack of DLC for this game sometime soon.

TalkBack / Zelda Wins Best Handheld Game at the GDC Awards
« on: March 20, 2014, 05:24:00 PM »

Nintendo didn't get too much love at the awards show, but one award is better than none.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36893/zelda-wins-best-handheld-game-at-the-gdc-awards

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has received the award for Best Handheld/Mobile Game at the 2014 Game Developers Conference Awards.

It beat out smartphone games such as DEVICE 6 and Ridiculous Fishing, Tearaway on the PlayStation Vita, and Fire Emblem Awakening, which is also on the 3DS.

While it was the only Nintendo game to actually receive an award at the show, Nintendo managed to get a couple nominations in other categories. Zelda and Super Mario 3D World both got nods in the Best Design category, and 3D World was also nominated for the Game of the Year Award, with Zelda receiving an honorable mention.

Time for another Shaq Attack.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36783/shaq-fu-a-legend-reborn-crowdfunding-campaign-launched-has-wii-u-and-3ds-stretch-goals

Shaq Fu: The Legend Continues has been announced via Indiegogo, and will make its way to Wii U if it surpasses $1,080,000 in contributions, and 3DS if it passes $960,000.

The game will be a sequel to the critically panned SNES and Sega Genesis fighter Shaq Fu. Instead of a fighting game, The Legend Continues will instead be a Beat-'em-Up in the style of Streets of Rage. The game is being developed by Big Deez Productions, in partnership with Shaquille O'Neal.  The team is made up of various developers from games such as Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Duke Nukem and more.

"Shaq Fu is what the original game should have been – an instant classic," states the game description on Indiegogo. "We're talking Streets of Rage meets Street Fighter meets Devil May Cry. It’s a modern day take on the classic beat ‘em up.  Play as Shaquille O’Neal – learn hundreds of moves and battle techniques, take on thousands of enemies with dozens of cool melee weapons, battle bosses in dynamic arenas, master cool finishing moves and play with your buddies in COOP mode or against each other in player vs player combat."

A planned release date is yet to be given.

TalkBack / CastleStorm Review
« on: March 04, 2014, 08:23:00 PM »

Your content is in another castle.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/36748/castlestorm-from-outcast-to-savior-dlc-review

CastleStorm was quite a treat when it arrived just after Christmas last year on the Wii U eShop. Its addictive gameplay and witty writing helped make it one of the eShop’s best hidden gems. The game must’ve performed up to Zen Studio’s expectations, as they’ve released a DLC pack, From Outcast to Savior, that was previously only available on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. While this DLC pack isn’t very long and doesn’t expand too much upon the foundation of the game, it scratches a necessary itch for CastleStorm players who already beat the game’s campaign mode.

From Outcast to Savior takes place after the events of the normal campaign mode, as you play as a soldier who wins a spot in the king’s Royal Guard, which doubles as a new class for the game. There are six different stages, each with two to four scenarios each. While it seems like it’s a miniscule amount of content, the challenge these new stages present will keep you occupied for at least a few hours.

The gameplay, music, and sound are taken right from the standalone game, but the new additions come in the form of a few new weapons, such as the Iron Fist which is highly effective in taking down your enemy’s castle walls, and the Carpet Bomb which flings a barrel above your enemies and releases a string of bombs. Using these new weapons is incredibly satisfying and adds a new layer of strategy to the game’s existing Survival, Skirmish and multiplayer modes.

Despite the campaign not taking more than three hours to complete, along with the final stage not taking advantage of the new weapons, From Outcast to Savior is still worth it for using the new Royal Guard class in the other modes of the game. This is one DLC pack that should keep you busy all throughout the… knight.

Welcome to This Week in Super Smash Bros., our weekly recap of the various updates, images, and information regarding the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games for Wii U and 3DS. Here's a look at what the game's creator, Masahiro Sakurai, shared with us this week, along with his comments.

Monday, 2/24/14: Diddy Kong (Character mechanic update)

The twin rocketbarrels are back, now with the ability to launch along more horizontal trajectories. They can also come off when opponents hit them mid-boost.

Tuesday 2/25/14: Boxing Ring (Stage info)

There are actually two versions of the boxing ring stage! This ring is the Smash Bros. version…

…and this one is the Punch Out!! W.V.B.A. design. King Dedede really likes fighting in the ring, doesn't he?

Wednesday, 2/26/14: Finishing Moves (Game mechanic)

Now consecutive standard attacks will always transition into a finishing move. This is Fox's finishing kick after his standard combo attack.

Thursday, 2/27/14: Waluigi (Assist Trophy)

Once again, Waluigi's Assist Trophy joins the collection!! …Which also means he's not a playable character. Just because you try hard doesn't mean you'll make it into the battle.

Friday, 2/28/14: Dendenne (Pokeball)

Dedenne's hard at work too.
