The Greening (Or Not) of the Wii Software Library

Katamari Damacy

On one hand, the Wii is getting franchises that never showed up on the GameCube. On the other, there are still plenty of titles that would be perfect on Nintendo's latest console, yet aren't.

Katamari Damacy

What is it?

The Katamari series has seen release on both Sony's home console the PlayStation 2 and their portable console the PSP. More recently, the series made a departure from the Sony camp and hopped on the Xbox 360 bandwagon.

The game is a quirky, extremely Japanese title from Namco that involves a guy with a man bulge that would make Ron Jeremy jealous, a bite-sized prince, and a big sticky ball. Yeah...

Anyway, after the King of all Cosmos gets drunk and destroys all of the stars in the universe, the Prince is tasked with rolling up items on Earth to create new stars and comets. As players move around the level, the Katamari (the titular "sticky ball") picks up anything small enough to stick to it and crashes into anything too big. As more items are picked up, the Katamari grows to epic proportions, allowing everything in sight to be attached to it upon contact.

Why should it (or a continuation of it) come to Wii?

Alright Namco, what the hell? You put the game on the PS2, which was a decent enough decision considering the eclectic audience, but why not a GameCube release to coincide? The market would've supported it without question. Then the next generation starts and you can put it on a system with motion control that would handle ball rolling perfectly … and you put it on the 360, a system that would naturally shun it. Right … smart move. Supposedly Namco is working on porting Beautiful Katamari to the Wii, but I'll believe it when I see it. It's already been well over a year and still there is nothing.

The same goes for the handheld release. The PSP? The DS is a no-brainer, and Namco managed to screw that one up too! It's almost as if Namco hates money.

I say it's about time we make this happen, Namco. Considering every game is more or less the same thing, a port collection of the first two PS2 titles would work fine, though a nice new title would be even better. Regardless, in some form this series needs to get in on the hot Wii action.
