Proud Sponsors of Des Lynam’s Moustache

London, 10.30am, 4 October 2002

The latest in a string of high profile sports sponsorships sees Nintendo enter the game with a groundbreaking deal to sponsor Des Lynam’s moustache. The deal has been struck to mark the launch of Nintendo’s latest blockbuster video game, Super Mario Sunshine, only for NINTENDO GAMECUBE.

Star of the game, world famous gaming icon Mario, is known for sporting a splendid moustache, much like Des himself. It was this that made Des the perfect choice as ambassador for Mario in his latest gaming incarnation. And while the link may not be immediately obvious between a moustachioed Italian-American plumber from Brooklyn and a legendary sports anchorman from London, Des & Mario are showing that a fine moustache will transcend many borders.

This morning Des said of the deal, “I’m pleased that the true worth of my moustache has finally been realised. It’s something I’ve worn proudly for years, despite what fashions have come and gone. I consider Mario a long-serving brother in arms, and long may we both wear our fine facial hair with pride.”

Andy Williams, Nintendo UK, stated, “We’re over the moon to have Des on board. It’s a meeting of two true moustachioed icons of their age, and sees Nintendo enter the premier league of sports sponsorship. I can only hope the purple comes out of Des’ moustache, and that he doesn’t become addicted to playing Super Mario Sunshine at the expense of the sporting world as a result of this.”

The sponsorship deal is for a year, and as part of the deal Nintendo are looking to insure Des’ moustache against damage & loss. The announcement was marked by a photocall with Mario and Des, who sported a GAMECUBE purple moustache for the occasion. The photocall took place in central London in front of a giant poster of Des announcing the association.
