Nintendo Leads November Game Sales in the U.S.

Wii flirts with the million mark; the DS laughs at it.

The NPD Group has released its U.S. video game sales figures for the month of November, and the numbers are downright staggering across the board:

November 2007 Hardware Sales

Nintendo DS -1.53 million

Wii - 981k

Xbox 360 - 770k

PSP - 567k

PlayStation 2 - 496k

PlayStation 3 - 466k

The holiday shopping season is in full swing, and the numbers prove it. All hardware numbers have essentially doubled from their normal figures, except for the Nintendo DS, which is in a different league altogether. Last month, Nintendo's handheld outsold the PSP, PS3, and PS2 combined, which is simply extraordinary. The Wii might have sold just as much if not for its relative lack of supply.

November 2007 Top Ten Software Sales

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) - 1.57 million

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) - 1.12 million

Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360) - 980k

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PS2) - 967k

Wii Play w/Remote (Wii) - 564k

Mass Effect (Xbox 360) - 473k

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3) - 444k

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) - 426k

Halo 3 (Xbox 360) - 387k

Assassin's Creed (PS3) - 377k

Other than the outstanding performance of Activision's Call of Duty 4 (especially the Xbox 360 version), there are no real surprises on the software side of the fence. Super Mario Galaxy joins three other games to sell a million copies across all platforms in November. Also, Wii Play is still selling, and Guitar Hero III for Wii is as well, despite the mono audio issue.

Overall, the video game industry took in $2.63 billion in November, a 52% increase over last November. Last November, the Wii and PS3 were released in North America, so this increase is a good benchmark for comparisons moving forward. Half of all money spent on gaming was toward video game software, the $1.3 billion being a 62% increase from the same period last year.

ROFL at PS3 on the bottom.

DAaaMan64December 13, 2007

I kinda think our game sales should be better.

Dear Nintendo,

I take checks, cash, Visa and Master Cards.

I wonder if Nintendo could pull out 1 million Wiis in NA in december if supply gets there.

IceColdDecember 13, 2007

I wonder, if Nintendo had enough supply, what is the maximum number of Wiis they could have sold in November in NA. 2 million? More?

CalibanDecember 14, 2007

Why is Wii Play still selling...I can see it right now, Wii Fit is going to have skyrocketing sales.

MaryJaneDecember 14, 2007

I wonder how well Call of Duty 4 would have sold on the Wii.

Anyway, I find it strange that the PS2 and Wii versions of GHIII are the ones that made the list, well not really the PS2 version, but the Wii version yes. Is this because it's "casual" game that hardcore gamers can enjoy too? The Wii hasn't passed the 360 in total hardware sales just yet (correct me if I'm wrong), and PS2 has far more consoles out than any other, easy to see why the PS2 version sold the best, not so much why the Wii version was next in line with the HD, downloadable content having, real stereo playing next-gen consoles didn't make the list with this game. Last month the Wii version outsold the PS2 version, while being outsold by the 360 version these are strange times for videogames. Next year won't be make or break, I think 2009 will have that honor, but next year is going to be big it'll be the 2nd year for the Wii and PS3 and they better start coming out with quality rich games like the 360 did (or like SMB will be). Both systems are still viewed through the image of their predeccessors to the Wii's hinderance and the only thing keeping the PS3 alive right now.

I think developers need to make more worthy games that play across all platforms then they'll see where their money should be spent, if they keep releasing half-assed rehashes and complain when they don't sell, the Wii is destined for mediocrity.

I don't understand why people are still surprised by this... it still comes with a controller doesn't it? You can't really apply that logic to Wii Fit until other games that utilize the (whatever they're calling the board) come out.

StogiDecember 14, 2007

I played quite a bit of COD4 on 360 last night and all I can say is..............I WANT IT FOR WII!

Dual-Analog just frustrates me now.

CalibanDecember 14, 2007

KashogiStogi, I hear ya man, it's quite bothersome to play FPS games on a dual-analog control when we know there are better control methods. By the way, you should try Team fortress 2...and Portal too.

Wii Fit does come with its own controller, the Wii Board.
Just because Wii Play comes with a controller it doesn't mean you are getting it for free. In the mind of the average consumer, they obviously think like that, however, we (gamers) know that the software value is between the $5 to $10 value thus rendering the idea as useless because it comes with a controller.

I don't believe that will happen anytime soon. I know I have no fact to prove what I think, so you will just have to take it as it is, or not.

probably it has... I mean, aren't these US only numbers?

NeoThunderDecember 14, 2007

I heard that Wii is readily available in japan, I would think with the demand slowed there they could shift those systems to the states.

I kind of already said you can't use the logic of the "free" controller attitude on WiiFit because it is the only game so far that uses the board, you aren't really getting it free if you can only use it on the one game, except for a collectors item which will be ruined by feet...
Yes... we (gamers) do know that the software value is between $10 and $20 I would say, (they still had to pay people to make an original game no matter how short or simple) however, this isn't a "gamers only" system. There are plenty of non-gamers out there, who would be unaware of such a thing and will only realize the low-pro of the game after buying, and then still be satisfied because, hey at least they got a controller out of it.

Family Ski will use the Wii Board...

EnnerDecember 14, 2007

Ooo, family ski. That sounds fun. I hope there will be family snowboard too!

As for the numbers, an awesome showing by the DS. It's just mindboggling. Also, it's a bit sad that the PS2 is outselling the PS3. Okay, probably more funny than sad.
