sure it does, it also takes away choice which makes a LAN racing game fun. If you think its a good thing, then good for you, but I would bet you are in the clear MINORITY on this one.

oh err, i didn't know that, about the LAN not being able to select characters, does seem a bit odd, but if it's like the n64 version character selection would be sucky, given once a character is highlited you can't even put your cursor on them, 8 people would make it kinda annoying to select characters, and would most likely result in squabbleing between gamers. not a good thing.

thats my guess behind their reasoning.

I think the review was very fair and clearly explained their reasoning much better than IGN did.

Never said they didn't, I just said I was disappointed.

Makes sense due to the fact that two people can't use the same characters.

I'm guessing Nintendo wanted to eliminate any squabbles there would be over who gets to play as Yosih, or who gets to play as Mario, etc, but just telling each person who they'll be playing with. Still, though, the random assignment could have been put it as an extra feature rather than the only thing.

Then again, Fran has looked over many features before. Remember, IGN has only had the American version of the game for a few days now, so it was probably the Japanese version they were reviewing- either way, mistakes are sure to have been made.

Ok, first things first, Mario Kart Double Dash is a VERY fun game, its just awesome.

So far im loving it, only complaints are that the Australian version says Miles per hour instead of Kilometres per hour (what kind of country still goes by miles, honestly?), and that the computer opponents always come in the same positions in every race of a GP, and you basically have to come first in every race to get gold. Thats all.

The tracks are brilliant, i have not found ONE track i dislike (although the desert one is more annoying than the rest), and their are shortcuts littered around the tracks, but they are harder to find and harder to pull off successfully than in previous Mario Kart games. I love the Yoshi track, Baby Park, the Donkey Kong track, and another track i unlocked the best. But i like every single track ALOT. Some battle tracks are... a little disappointing, but the one i just unlocked is absolutely awesome, and the standard ones are still fun, just one lame one in my opinion.

The music is decent, and tolerable, i LOVE the whistling tune in Mario circuit and Luigi circuit and others, its insanely addictive, im gonna be whistling that tune everywhere i go for the next few weeks i can tell. Some tracks you cant hear the music very loudly though.. for some reason, although that may just be me. Some songs are completely forgetable, and sound like they were just thrown together by a two year old in a few minutes, but the good outweighs the bad in the case, for me anyway.

The two people in a kart is where Double Dash's main new gameplay aspect comes into play. At the character select screen you choose two characters, and one kart. One character is at the back, the other at the front. You can make them switch places just by pressing the Z button. As far as i can tell, it doesnt make any difference to the handling of the kart when you switch characters around the kart during the game. Some characters are too big, or cant drive certain karts, for example Donkey Kong wont be able to ride in Baby Mario's pram.

There are lots of new items, as you all would know, each character has their own 'special' item that only they can use, and overall they all seem fairly balanced, noone's weapon greatly overpowers anyone else's special weapon. I'll let you find out what each characters weapons are for yourself. When you pick up an item it is automatically sent to the character thats at the back of the kart, so if you get a special, the character at the back of the kart gets it (ie if mario is at the back, the special will be a fireball). All the classic items return, except... for one, ghost, and there are plenty of new items.

I got a chance to play Co-op play, its very fun. Basically its two players controlling one kart, one player drives while the other player attacks, you can switch at any time by both of you pressing the Z button at the same time. Co-op mode allows you to punch and kick enemies when you are controlling the character at the back, and you can do F-Zero like side attacks against your opponents.

The controls were a bit hard for me to adjust to at first, but after about 10 minutes i was loving it, and driving along with no problems. The controls really grow on you, every time i play this game it feels better and better.

The graphics are very Mario Sunshine-ish (there are lots of Mario Sunshine references throughout the game too), lots of colour and nice animated touched bring the game to life, and the heat effect seen in SMS and Wind Waker is there, although you dont notice it as much. The game runs very smoothly, even in 4 player split screen. Overall the game looks very impressive, the graphics are top notch.

Those are my impressions after about 6 hours of play, i LOVE Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Oh sure...It sure is fun when you and your friends fight over who gets to be so-and-so...The whole point of it is to shorten the gap between vets and newbies, which is something you obviously can't appreciate...

I enjoy the race to get the characters you want, it is part of the game IMO. Make the random selection an option as Mouse Clicker said, not something forced upon.

As for Newbies versus vets, lifes a bitch aint it. They will get better through beatings, thus is the way of the wild.

but what happens when you plan online and 3 people all want to be yoshi and the game can't progress past the character select screen because no one wants to back down?  if you're playing with your friends in the same room you can make deals or simply beat the other guy into submission, but you can't do that on the internet with total strangers.  especially if you can't even talk with them.

however, it might have been a better idea to just let multiple people be the same character.

I agree with what Mario said..the tracks rule except maybe dry dry desert..The best thing ion this game so far is the handling..I absoultly love the powerslides..its way deeper and it look cool too.

Graphics are the best i have seen so far, my only problem with them is that the charecter models need some extra polygons ( expeccialy on the nose ).

Multiplayer is fun but no stages stand out besides Luigis Mansion ,( I still have to unlock 1 more stage ) and the difficulty is hard..it will last you about 3 times more than mk 64..

Oh yeah, game takes 3 blocks as a minimum, eight if you save ghost data. Or something. I dunno, someone out there might of wanted to know that pointless little fact.

And it seems the powerslides are alot deeper than I first thought. If you jiggle the stick while sliding, your sparks turn blue, then you can get a slight speed boost. Hurray!

The CPU does cheat at times (they can sometimes go over a banana peel with no slowdown/crash), but nowhere near as bad as MK64. There's no "Woo, I'm coming first by heaps! What? WHY IS THE CPU ALREADY RIGHT BEHIND ME?! WHY DID I JUST LOSE?"

Favorite character in MK64? Mario. Such an original answer.

I'm in Europe and was lucky enough to get the game early, so I've been playing it for 3 days now
I'd have to admit:

"I agree with the IGN review."

Single player and multiplayer races are a lot more fun than in MK64, in a different way, but the levels seem unoriginal, despite their interactivity. Sadly the multplayer atmosphere which I loved in the SNES & N64 versions is kind of ruined. I played it with 8 friends yesterday evening and after an hour or so we just got tired of it. It might be that we're older now than back in 1997 & 1992, but it just isn't the same old fun. We ended up watching movies until late at night. I would have to say that basically is because the multiplayer maps are CRAP.

I hate to be a bitch, but I could think of more fun ones in my sleep. Yes some are good, but like I first though... it feels like they've been lazy with the level design, and it's not something I was talking about openly last night. I wanted everyone to have fun. But it just didn't happen, if anything the game's gotten less attractive to get into and get a feel for. Even with the new multiplayer modes, when you got 8 friends (most of whom are avid Mario Kart fans) and they'd all rather watch a movie, I don't think I need to add to that.

As closing I would like to add that we've had a couple of good laughs and the controls are easier to pick up now, which makes it fun for everyone to race around. Right now I'm thinking I need to sit down with 3 buddies and see if the battle modes are possible to get into and feel the competition previous versions brought.

Canuck: Tunnelling. Done on PC, done on XBox, done on GameCube.

My "review":

The game itself is nothing special. It has Mario and his crew, but that isn't enough to make it stand out. I've seen many games like it, some better, some worse.
Weapon usage is excessive and it's not unsual to be hit by three different shots from different directions in succession. The cars aren't balanced too well, heavier cars have a huge advantage in top speed over the others, while the smaller ones need boosters to come close to that. But that doesn't help YOU. As a player you should use something with high accelleration, as things will impact into you left, right and center. That will at least help you to a place somewhere in the middle instead of the end of the field.
Of course, forget all of that when playing on 50cc, the AI drives like a braindead there and has no access to any weapon that even resembles something good, so you can win 1st by driving blindfold and crashing into any and all obstacles the game and your enemies throw at you.
The high point of the weapons is they're creative. The low point is they range from absolutely useless to overkill with very few in between. Oh, yeah, I love that homing nuke-shell that is guranteed to blast the first place racer and anything within a 10 metre radius of him. Perfectly unavoidable and infuriating 3 metres in front of the goal. Things like the green shell, the banana and the fake-powerup rarely hit any opponent you care about. In the first few rounds, that is, after that these things litter the street. The red shell now homes a lot better, following the track for about 1 kilometre. The only warning you get is some kind of incoming!-warning that isn't guranteed to show up and will not help you in any way. In the original, you could evade a red shell by bringing a wall between you and it. No chance here! You don't even need sight contact to hit an enemy with it.
In the 100cc Star Cup my place wasn't determined by my driving skills but the number of homing projectiles fired at me. By the way, the AI is pretty accurate with those green shells and the only warning you get is the thing impacting into you. Wait, that isn't a warning!
You need to make a turbo start in the beginning, as half or the entire field will use it. If you don't manage to get that timing right, add 4 to your place. 8 with a heavy car. Computer drivers still adhere to their order. They mix a bit more often, but that can be attributed to increased weapon usage.
Cup legth was cut from 5 to 4, leaving you with fewer tracks. The tracks themselves are a lot easier than what was served in the original. The removal of lives and the more generous scoring make mistakes a lot more painful. Score badly in one track? Good luck, your season is ruined.
I hate the fact that some hits make you lose items. Sure, I accept that I lose items when hit with a star or mushroom (they get stolen, if you don't know) but why the hell do I lose my weapons when hit with the damn lightning?

My recommendation: Unless there is some terrorist holding your family hostage forcing you to, you shouldn't buy this game. It simply is too average and doesn't feel like a real game, more a gimmick. It probably is the best LAN-capable Cube game to date, but if you are so desperate for LAN, try playing on the PC.
If that is the best Nintendo had for Christmas this year, better hope for a good year 2004 instead.

Alright heres my review- I aint good at this stuff so ill keep it quick-

Aight when compared to previous versions of MK DD has much better controls..the powerslides are deep , controls feel more realistic , faster gameplay and most importantly great use of weapons.

Gratest thing abouth this gmame are the tracks..they are really original..and I love them all except for maybe Dry Dry desert..wheter flying in the sky or dodging forevalls the tracks always have an extra something in store for you.

TBH the only downside of this game too me is the battle maps ( thats until you unlock the 2 other stages ) ..there fun but cookie island and block fort are really bad..pipe plaza is really fun and nothing beats the gamecube stage in bob bomb blast.

I havent tried 4 player but this really gets your blood going. The battler modes are great and co-op is a blast . My brother and I love to team up..he is taking out Bowser with his red shell while im in the front skiding past bananas.

My score : 9.85 out of 10. Best game this year.

P.S -  3 of my friends have it and they all agree with me about it being better than previous Mario Karts,

No, theres no quick race unfortunately. Although theres a small chance there is, and that i just havent unlocked it yet...

I cant really say what i would give this game out of ten, it seems like ive barely scratched the surface of the gameplay mechanics and there's still alot more i have to unlock, but so far Mario Kart Double Dash is fun enough to keep me and my friends playing it non-stop. This is by far the best Mario Kart yet.

KDR_11k: When you are about to get hit by a shell, the warning tells you, and it gives you time to drop a banana or fire a shell behind you and block it. The warning does help you.

akdaman1: Yeah i agree with you about the battle maps, some of them are just so lame, unlockable ones are pretty good though, and yeah the GameCube one is very fun for bob-omb blast!

My score - undecided
