I have pre-ordered a PS4, but I'm not going to pretend that the software available at launch is hugely enticing. I do plan to pick up Shadow Fall and Resogun, but the games I'm really excited for are Second Sons, The Witness and Watch Dogs.
So why am I picking one up at launch? I mean, the launch line-up isn't all that great (although I am genuinely interested in Shadow Fall having never played a Killzone game), I have no attachment to Sony as a company having never owned one of their systems, and I'm not exactly made of money. The reasons for which I am picking up a PS4 are largely selfish.
Firstly, I skipped the PS3 and 360. Had I known the generation would be this long I definitely would have jumped ship sooner, but I kept pushing it off, telling myself that I had waited this long and that I might as well wait until new hardware shipped. So my first reason for picking up a Next-gen console at launch is because the last console I purchased was the Wii, and frankly I've been waiting a long time for something new.
"But it's all about the games" I hear you cry, "and you just said you didn't like any of 'em." Well I guess that's true, but I do find the PS4 hardware exciting for it's potential, and I think Sony has made a convincing case that they mean to support this system (hopefully better than they supported the Vita). It has been demonstrated many times before that a hungry company makes for a successful platform, and Sony is nothing if not hungry.
So those are my reasons: I really want a new home console (I'm shallow, I know),The PS4 has some games coming next year that look really sweet, and Sony has made the most convincing case that their system will be the one that will best match my tastes over the course of the next 4-5 years.
So basically you can boil my reasons down to 'PixPix likes shiny things'.
Is it a punt? Sure. Am I excited about getting to play with my new toy? Absolutely!
