Why don't Nintendo fans like Fighting Games?
« on: May 25, 2003, 11:11:08 AM »
I haven't posted anything on this board in a while but this has been nagging me for a bit now.  I see so many threads about all these great 1st, 2nd and 3rd party RPGs, Adventure, Racing etc. games but hardly anyone talks about fighting games.  Sure, almost everyone is excited about Soul Calibur 2, but that was almost solely based on the game having Link from Legend of Zelda in it.  I was a big fan of the original SC on DreamCast and I was excited about the game WAY before I even heard about Link being a playable character in it.  But that is the only fighting game anyone is talking about.  What about anyone wishing for or protesting the lack of any other quality fighting game on the GCN?  Sure, we're getting DragonBall Z: Budokai and some of us already have Bloody Roar: Primal Fury (still got my copy) but why doesn't anyone get their panties in a twist when we don't get Tekken 4 or 5 or Virtua Fighter 4 or any of the Dead or Alive games.  Sure you can argue about the quality of the DOA series but that's not the point.  I would love a Fighter's MegaMix 2 from SEGA on my GCN or even a Last Bronx or Fighting Vipers from them.  Heck! Give me a 3D Eternal Champions!  What about more fighters from Capcom?  I'm not even going to comment on Mortal Kombat because that series is all-and I mean ALL-about combos and remembering the combos and not even up to Soul Calibur's quality and gameplay goodness, what with the controls favoring customizable combos i.e. creating them on the fly.  That's one of the reasons I love my copy of Bloody Roar.  Sure you might say its a button masher but that doesn't mean it isn't fun.  I like the freedom to create my own combos and finding new moves I didn't see before.  It makes a good fighter even better when you have worthwhile secrets to add to gameplay or just a nice graphical touch like customizable outfits (think VF4).

Ok.  That's all from me for now.  what about you guys?  And don't get me started on why none of you buy Sports Games (Mario Golf and Tennis don't count).

Smash Brothers is the only fighting game for me, and that's so innovative and different it barely fits the genre.  I don't really like fighting games. . . I don't know why.

I have played Bloody Roar, though (my friend has it), and that's a pretty fun game.

I like fighting games, and cant wait for Soul Calibur to come out.  I really do wish we would get Dead or Alive though.  I had Dead or Alive 2 on my Dreamcast when I had that, and have been playing Dead or Alive 3 on my friends X-box.  Its fast and fun.  If only it wast exclusive to X-box.  Oh well, hopefully Soul Calibur will make be forget about DOA.

wish i could answer your question, but it seems to me that owners of resective systems all have their main preferences in terms of genres.  i bet if you were to do a psychological study into this, you would find an interesting trend.

my only contribution to this discussion would be that most nintendo gamers are just loyal fans of nintendo games and everything nintendo and well, growing up with nintendo, fighting games were not overly popular (remember when nintendo opted to go with grey blood in MK?)

I don't really like fighting games because it's basically whoever looked up/memorized the most/best combos and played the most.

It's impossible to just pick up and play and have fun, as you'll get your @ss kicked in a  few seconds by any experienced player.

Hi there.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe Namco is being given numerous money hats by Sony to keep Tekken on the PS2?  Same thing with DOA.

We get SC2 and Smash Bros.  And those are the only fighting games worth playing anyway.

Sure, would be nice to have some more (Guilty Gear 2 comes to mind), but let Sony and M$ their crappy games like Supar Super Street Fighters Megamix 32 hyper family fun time edition version 2.3+ with 3 extra animation frames per character.  In fact, Sammy/SNK fighters are the only other real worthwhile ones.  Capcom's games all follow the same formula.  If you've played one, you've played them all.  Same thing with sports games.  I can't undestand people who buy Madden everyyear.  "It has new rosters!"  OMG HOORAY.  ITS THE SAME GAME TOO.

We don't know what goes on behind closed curtains in the business world, so before you go off ranting like a loon, make sure your argument isn't full of holes.

I enjoy fighting games a great deal.  I have played all Mks since 1, most of the zillions of street fighters and many of the DC fighting games.  I generally buy one or two sports games per system, depending on how often they bring something.  I generally also only play arcadey sports games, same with racing games.  The Rush games were a staple in my collection, as well as the NFS games.  I still play SWE1:Racer and Rush 2.

Nintendo fans don't like fighting games as much because, quite simply, we don't get that many.  Fighting game fans tend to get other systems.

I'm not much of a fighting game person, myself.  I like Smash Bros. though.  I just prefer adventure games and stuff to just one-on-one battles all the time.  Also, I hate button combinations.  I wanna try Soul Calibur II, though.

Who says Nintendo fans arent fighting game fans? I already preordered Soul Calibur 2... but the problem is companies dont release fighting games for the GCN....  I bought a PS2 AFTER buying a GCN just to be able to play Tekken 4.... the fighting games on the gcn just arent good enough... Bloody Roar, MK DA, and Capcom vs SNK thats about it... i consider SSBM a Party game more than a fighting game

Well, one problem with fighting games is that developers tend not to know what to do with the C-Stick.  If it's a port, then they turn it in to an automatic special move, which is just annoying.  Developers also don't like dealing with the Z-trigger and its awkward placement.  The cube controller was just not made with fighters in mind.  I mean, developers can work around it.  HAL used the Cube controller to its fullest extent with Smash Bros. Melee (despite the cheap, and might I add, un-switch-offable C-Smash) by keeping the controllers relatively simple.

The PS2 right now has the best controller for fighters.  It has the most buttons, unintrusive right analog stick, and a good D-Pad.  It has the best default controller for fighting games, but there are plenty of unofficial controllers for fighters that are superior.

As for me?  I like fighting games.  I, however, tend to play games alone, and fighting games wear out awfully quickly alone.

The last fighting game (and I think the only one...) I bought was Killer Instinct on SNES, and then only because it was a really good deal.  It's not that I don't like fighting games, as I do play a good amount of Tekken 3, Soul Edge, SSBM, and a few others... it's just that I am not very good at them, and they don't hold my interest for long.  I have been giving serious thought to getting Soul Calibur II, as it reminds me a little of Killer Instinct, and is obviously an exceptional fighting game.  I just like the style I guess.

Nintendo fans like GOOD fighting games, games that have extra value to them.  Soul Calibur 2 is going to sell like hotcakes, you watch.

I really do wish that Microsoft would stop ramming money up Tecmo's ass so we could get a Dead or Alive fighting game...
I'm considering getting an Xbox just for the DOA series...

hrm I always hoped that the tekken series would eventually work its way unto the nintendo systems one day. but i guess that will never happen considering sony is paying them shvtloads.

I'm a nintendo fan, but I like fighting games, best of all the tekken series. Of those, tekken tag is my fav - it seems to be the pinnacle. Imo tekken 4 tried to copy the doa style a little bit and it totally messed it up.

Anyhoo, my love for the tekken series isnt great enough for me to choose another console platform over the Nintendo console. (I can only afford 1 console each 'generation')

grap3fruitman, my friend who owns an Xbox bought DOA3, and brought it back a week later. He said the gameplay was shallow and the unlockables were a joke. He compared it to SSBM having only one unlockable character.

Oh, but we DO like fighting games- at least I do. I have Soul Calibur for my Dreamcast and have unlocked quite literally everything, I love SSBM to death and have unlocked everything in it, I'll be pre-ordering Soul Calibur 2 around when it comes out, my friend has Primal Fury and we unlocked everything in that in a night, another friend has Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO and I've played that quite a bit, I hope to pick up Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for either my Dreamcast or PS2 soon, I rented VF4 and thought it was great- don't generalize and say Nintendo fans don't like fighting games. A lot of us do like them, there just hasn't been an abundance of them on Nintendo consoles recently.

now its very easy to generalize and say most Nintendo fans don't like sports titles...however..iv always loved fighting games. A few years back Namco said that Gamecube was going to be their lead platform and that tekken was a possibility...a week later you hear tekken is exclusive to ps2 and namo said yes there wasda moneyhat involved.

I really don't like fighters. My first experience was with the SNES version of Street Fighter II. I bought the game having never played a fighter before. All the mags were hyping it back then and I thought I would like it too. After paying around $50 for it and playing a few hours, I realized this wasn't for me. Since I paid so much for it and I didn't get a lot of new games back then, I made myself play it trying to get interested. But I couldn't. I thought the whole concept was dumb and boring.

I never gave any other considerations to fighters until Smash Bro's for the N64 was released. Knowing it came with characters I was familiar with, I decided to rent it. Within an hour I was bored with it. The last 3 days of my rental I never even played it.

To this day I haven't played the GC version because I figure I won't like it. I did pick up the demo disc and tried out Soul Calibur 2...for about 5 minutes. I still find the whole genre numbingly boring. I really don't like fighters.

Ok, I'm wondering why some of you say that you don't really get into fighting games because it's easy for another good player hand you your arse.  I say, and it's always been my experience, to play a game alone and often to at least get the hang of one character before you start with a human opponent.  Kilik was my all-time favorite fighter in SC on the DC and I got pretty good with him.  I often beat my girlfriend, her cousins and her cousins step-sons with him or another couple of characters I got proficient with.  Not saying I was the best, just that I did my homework and had a strategy.  You don't have to memorize moves and combos with SC like you do with "combo fests" like Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct.  It is very much a "PICK UP AND PLAY" game.
About SSB: M, I really liked it when I rented it, but because of the frantic action on-screen my girlfriend never really liked it as she lost sight of her character every time she played.  I did have Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, but even though some of the extras were cool, it just bored me to death.  Freedom of movement was good, as well as the option of using weapons, but the extras, IMO, were "BLEH!!!!!!".  I mean, come on! Most of the extras in the Krypt were just renders and concept art.  Some nice videos, extra characters and some bio about the arts and weapons thrown in for the "hardcore" fighting fan.  It sucked when you saved enough money to open a Kasket only to find it empty.  Midway should have done their homework and completely made the gameplay a cross between SC and VF/Last Bronx.  Took that game back to EB and traded it in for Wind Waker.   It would be great if Nintendo themselves made a fighting game that would rival the trinity of excellence in fighting games:  Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur.  HOpefully next generation.

Now to respond to you, Strell.  I never said anything about why PS2 keeps on getting Tekken.  I thought everyone knew that:

[On Phone]
Sony:  Hey guys! Kaz here.  How would you like to keep Tekken on PS2 only, huh?
Namco:  We kinda wanted to bring over Tekken to the GCN and really take it in new directions.
Sony:  Heh.  We'll pay you 30 Billion Yen to keep it exclusive or else we'll let everyone know what you did with those motion-capture
          fighters in your dungeon.
Namco:  Really? Deal then!  We would love to keep it on PS2!
Sony:  Great!  Just dot your initials on the contract I'm sending you by my persoal carrier.  Don't mind his appearance.  He was born with
with that hump.  And the horns.  And the forked tail.  Some kind of radiation mutation from Hiroshima.

Besides, you're saying I'm ranting like a loon?  That's the only way to go on the 'net, don't you know.  I really LOVE fighting games.  Have since day one when I got my first one.  Just wish there was some other way to get the ones I want but I can't really afford it since I have a 2 yr old to think about and splurging on a PS2 for Tekken and VF just isn't responsible parenting.  Still, I already pre-ordered SC2 and that was before Link showed himself.  Just wish there was more to choose from.  Don't know how good DragonBall Z is and I require more than 15 moves per fighter.  Commercials on it looked good though and I am a big fan of the cartoons.  Can't wait till GT starts on CN.
One Ring to rule them all...
