I took a hammer fist... Updated again with painful video!
« on: April 16, 2009, 01:36:47 AM »
Hey guys! Some of you may know I am a martial arts student and teacher at the National Wushu Training Center in California. Today we had a special guest, Glen Levy, a man who has appeared on fight science for Discovery Channel many times.

I was his test dummy throughout the seminar and eventualy he taught us the hammer fist. Very similar to bruce lee's one inch punch. Except you aren't forced away, the entire impact just spreads through your body as it stays still. Absolutely devastating. Highest possible recording was 12,000 PSI befor the machines were destroyed by its power. A pro boxer's punch is 2,000 PSI, the difference is obviously huge.

Needless to say I felt it today, but only 1/16th of the power, though it happend about 2 hours ago from when I typed this, I am not kidding when I say I can still feel it now. There was an anitial strike, Ididnt go anywhere, and then all of a sudden it was as if cluster bombs went off inside my body. It was the most powerful thing I had ever felt in my life. As I stumbled to the floor, I tried to get up as soon as possible and jokingly say "was that your best shot" But man, I couldnt speak or move properly. It was incredible, I have never nearly lost my life befor, but I could only describe it as being shot, and dying.

I will post a video in the next day or two. My students and classmates told me it was scarey to watch. The anticipation alone was almost horrifying. But I had to justify his teachings, and feeling is believing.

Here is a video of my teacher Eric Chen, who took one the day befor. Its on youtube now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc_It0MXvw0

If that doesnt work just type in Hammer Fist Demo HD, and look for the guy on his knees on a blue carpet.

Tell me what you think guys I cant wait to show you my video. I havnt even seen it myself.

EDIT:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzP41WzhrYA&feature=channel_page

That's me there guys. I see it happend so fast but in the middle of it, it felt like forever. There is another video where its shown at a different angle where you see me almost touch the floor.

That poor phone book! It never did anything to anybody, now its bent all to hell!

That was interesting to watch. Well, the punching part at least. The crying on the floor bit needs more blood ;)

Yeah, I just don't feel like being serious tonight.

I'm looking forward to seeing you going down on your knees. Man, I'll never tire of saying that to you...

I'm in the "have to feel it to believe it" camp.
or at least know the person it happened to very well and see it with my own two eyes.

Not that I don't believe you, but I will never fully believe until it is a reality.

I will settle for an eye witness account, I don't actually want to feel it.

Interesting. It looked to be a weak strike, but apparently it gives substantial damage. The majority of strikes in any given martial arts are supposed to be lethal, so wouldn't it be fair to say that such a strike outcome would be predictable?
This "hammer fist", it seems to be a strike done specifically to target the chest, and correct me if I'm wrong because I don't practice any martial arts, but would the "hammer fist" affect you in the same way if it was struck anywhere else but the chest and head?

I noticed Glen started out with his body relaxed, and then gradually tensed up in a very short time from the ground up then ending with his fist.  I can see that's where the one-inch punch similarity comes in.  But the hammer fist apparently takes great advantage of the rotation to deliver additional impact.

If the one inch punch is a spring-loaded piston, the hammer fist is like catapult released or a baseball pitch.

Tho I've no clue how Fa Jing comes into play.

OK now I want Chinese takeout.

Does the phonebook help spread the impact?

Talking about me in another thread? if so I would like to read it.

Hey I didn't even mention Fa Jing, Ningurl, what do you know about it? Thats what it was all about. The phone book took allot of damage, but it doesn't help it spread. He explained that at full power, ones hear would explode, lungs colaps, and skulls would be destroyed. He is a fantasticly interesting man, and when he lived on his farm, he put down huge adult pigs that way before they ate them.

I remember thinking at that moment when he hit me, " he didnt move me a millimeter, it seemed so soft on the out side, but on the inside, I felt like my favorite anime characters when they recieve those devistating hits. I could hear the people watching me, say things like "oh my god" and "jesus!" and afterwards telling me, "don't do that again you scared me!" hahaha.

It seems its going to take a day or so befor I can get my own video, but I will post it for you guys. Also when I get a chance I will show you the old international staff routine that im doing. It's the same routine you see kilik do in soul calibur with his staff in the exibition theater.

I never heard of the term until I read the video description.  It sounds like the fabled "DIM MAK" (Jackson: "What the hell's a DIM MACK?") Van Damme did in the movie Bloodsport.

The youtube info mentioned "impact vs. momentum," so if that statement accurately describes the contrast between Fa Jing and typical strikes I'll probably sit down and try to develop the math to explain it.

I fully expected the guy in plaid to kick the other one in the face as he was crouching on the floor clutching his chest.

I used to watch Fight Science.Great Show!
Caterkiller what do you think were more devistating Bruce Lee's One inch punch or the Hammer fist?

Here is the main difference between the two. They are both applied with almost the same technique, but With Bruce lee you are forced away and sent flying, which means allot of the impact gets spread out every where, not just inside ones body.

With Glen's technique, you are forced to feel everything. In which case I think that one is worse, because I know it can literately pop hearts, and smash skulls, with out being blown away.

But in all honestly I don't know. I'm a huge fan of Bruce Lee and his teachings, but I just don't know much about that technique.

You know I auditioned for fight science recently, im kind of glad I didn't get picked. Because I am no master by any means and thats what they would have advertised me as. And that just seems wrong.

Thanks Phonebook Warrior Victim.  I understand it completely now (my engineering degree wasn't for nothing), particularly how it's the inverse of the One Inch Punch principles.  But to condition your body, develop the physical awareness, and develop the technique to achieve Fa Jing, totally different story.

Everyone can thank Bruce for being one of the first major public advocates for approaching Martial Arts like a science and not just a religion.
