The thing is options to eliminate threats make the game less scary. They could give you the option of hopelessly flailing an object at the enemy and then getting killed...

I like that option.  Many will complain the game is difficult cuz your actions should involve some thought and planning; the game justifiably weeds out weakness.

I can't think of anything in particular for an example, but I recall times where you had the option to try and fight enemies but they are invincible. I know RPG's like to let you fight a powerful character at some point where you are supposed to be beaten by it.

I just thought of some examples. Skies of Arcadia there is a Boss you cannot beat the first time you fight him.
Chrono Trigger there is also a boss like that.
Sometimes you just have to last a certain amount of time.
But these are just special fights, I can't think of any game where you cannot kill most enemies with traditional weapons. Maybe Nemesis from Resident Evil games though you do stop them in some cases, they just keep coming back. The Dahaka in Prince of Persia Warrior Within is also unbeatable.

Also I think that a point in Eternal Darkness was to feel empowered to kill monsters with an assortment of weapons instead of feeling helpless with a limited number of rounds like the old RE games.

No there isn't.  ;)
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Oh! Right! No there isn't. You can kill it if you really put your heart into it and believe you can do anything. ;)

It's actually kind of annoying how long it takes to lose that fight on purpose after a few New Game + runs.

IGN has some more details (the sounds like a blast):

http://wii.ign.com/articles/971/971316p1.html

Some of the major bullet points:

- Wii is the lead platform (for all the haters)

- camera is first person during the office segment. You can look around while the psychiatrist talks

- you must fill out a psychiatric profile

- almost every decision you make impacts the game. For example, if you first choose to look at your map or a girlie calendar on the wall, the game makes note of this decision

- an example of early changes: as you fill out your profile, the game will present you with different situations. When walking through town, you might see an open bar or an open diner. These things change as you make more and more choices

- use phone to dial, take pics, text, check voicemail, browse phonebook, changes options and settings (whose viewer shows a slowed framerate a la iPhone) to take and store pictures, check text messages and voice mail, look through your phone book, and access game options and settings

- take pictures of the environment to reveal new details: take a picture of a swingset with no one around it, look at the pic to see your daughter sitting on the swing

- pictures can cue voicemails and other occurrences

- game world changes from Silent Hill to evil Silent Hill right before your eyes

- intelligent enemies will hunt you down, talk to other enemies to find you, open doors and climb fences

-There are no weapons (guess that seals it in regards to combat)

I am quite happy as a Wii owner that it looks like Konami has chosen Wii as the primary platform to jumpstart its ailing franchise with what looks to be a game that appears to be MUCH MUCH more then a standard remake. This could put the series back on track.

I'm amazed this is Konami, the same Konami that has spewed average all over Wii. The same Konami that hardly invested in Wii game development.

That is very exciting news. Thanks for the update. I may add it to my original post along with some pictures if you don't mind GP so new people looking at the thread can see it all easily.

Thats fine I pulled it from GoNintendo's summary of the IGN article.

You guys also should check out IGN's interview with the team. I especially like the dynamic changing enviroment and the fact you no longer find notes scattered around but need to pay attention to your enviroment.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/971/971319p4.html

Here is an expansion of how the enemies are supposed to work taken from the interview:

Quote
They are very intelligent and extremely dynamic. They will hunt you down, co-ordinate with each other, flank you, cut you off, herd you, and stop you. You're in a nightmare and all you can do is hope to escape. As you can climb over walls, fences, through windows, up ladders, jump gaps, up stairs, through doors, so can they. They can go everywhere you can go and more. The enemy will evolve as the game goes on into your perfect nightmare creature based on your psychological profile.

Quote
This is a totally new nightmare experience. It's tense, quite often very fast paced, and always crap your pants scary. We didn't want to follow the same route that other horror games have pushed in and improve combat by making the player character adept with guns and melee weapons. We wanted this game to feel like a real horror movie. Where the antagonist is powerful and the protagonist just a normal guy like you or me. He's in a horrifying situation and he is desperate to get out of it. [Tomm Hulett] This is an exciting feature of our game that has a lot of people interesting – and a lot of people concerned. Worry not. We did not create a cookie cutter survival horror game and then tear combat out of it for kicks. The horror experience in Silent Hill is built from the ground up around the concept of escaping – running for your life. It's about the chase. It's about outthinking the monsters with split-second decisions. It's about surviving.

It looks like the team behind the game has been learning from their mistakes, they also did Homecoming and Silent Hill Origins.

Konami hasn't been completely average on the Wii, they made the Pro Evolution Soccer games which I hear are excellent and innovative and I almost bought a couple times.

They also made Elebits as well. I'm not saying they've been all average, but really if you take their support as a whole it has been pretty pathetic.

It's ironic that Silent Hill is coming out to be the premiere horror experience this gen, taking the spotlight away from any possible Resident Evil Capcom rail shooter or downport they might have flopping about in their offices.

How Splattered Mammaries secured a development budget must be a miracle.

Konami also made the best DDR games this generation on Wii, well except the disney one haha. Konami has showed decent Wii support, Capcom on the other hand is a little disappointing. I'm still waiting for Capcom to bring over Sengoku Basara 2(Devil Kings 2) to America on Wii(The Wii version has 2 and the expansion disc in Japan), but looks like that won't be happening.

Target Terror, Rock Revolution, Lost in Blue, Dewey's Adventure, and even Castlevania (Which while not terrible is still barely above average. Their best games are PES, Kororinpa 1/2, Elebits and um the Dance Dance games.

Capcom has released ONE average game that was Dead Rising. The rest have been above average of really good.
