Well Halo didn't sell any consoles in Japan...but Nintendo didn't sell enough there to combat the potential spike in 360 sales in NA and Europe.

Won't make much of a difference. Halo at this point in the 360s life will increase its niche base, but not by much. When the smoke lifts after the holiday, Nintendo will have a clear lead.

I actually think this Holiday season will sort of be equal ground on both sides, more or less, and that Nintendo will start pulling away once the Holiday rush is over.

I agree with you on the basis that I think the Wii will be supply constrained this holiday, while Microsoft has the resources to get enough systems out to retailers to meet demand.

Well, Reggie says that the supply for Christmas will be unprecedented, and quite a bit more than the launch numbers.

I just saw an article on CNN stating that the supply was expected to be larger, but still fall well short of demand.

With like a 13 million unit lead, it would take the PSP a LONG time to outsell the DS at this rate. And long before that can happen I think both Nintendo and Sony will be releasing their successor systems.

In short, the DS has won this generation in Japan. I don't think that can be undone at this point. Also, I think the PSP sales will taper off eventually.
is your sanity...

Well, I assumed a low end only NES games sold.  And that it ends up being closer to 39 million dollars of pure profit.

Realistically it is more than that, but that number is better in perspective with the idea of maintaining bandwidth, infrastructure, any work needed to get it on the virtual console, and then also taking out the money 3rd parties get from the sales.

Still not a bad amount of profit off of a download service.

It's had a major drop off since release.  Reaching a million units sold isn't lookin' too good right now.

When will the Wii software drought stop though? When will the slow period in Japan stop, and when will Wii hardware climb again?

Nintendo Faking Wii Shortage To Raise Holiday Demand
Posted by Victor Dangelo | Oct 10, 2007 07:41

Many reports have been coming out that Nintendo is going to have a shortage of Wii consoles this holiday season, but that may be just a ploy to spark extra demand for their console to beat the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Many analysts are stating that this is all just a game and that Nintendo has plenty of Wii consoles in stock. They have come out to the public and stated that they will have a shortage of consoles only to boost demand.

So if this is a ploy and nothing more than that Nintendo may be playing some dirty tricks to try and outsell the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3 and the upcoming 40GB version which will be priced to better compete with the PS3 and Wii.

The Xbox 360 is also threatening with a new Core console with the Xbox 360 Live Arcade priced at $279.99 to compete with the Wii as well.

If it comes out that Nintendo is lying about the Wii console shortage, Nintendo could be in for a public relations nightmare.

How does one increase demand by witholding stock during the strongest sales period of the year? Having demand exceed supply is nice but last I checked you don't make money on demand that's not being satisfied and even risk losing that demand. That's some Sony logic right there.
