New SP with Micro quality screen? Man how did I miss this?
« on: September 21, 2005, 08:57:51 AM »
Do you guys have any idea what I'm talking about?  Supposedly there are "Now with brighter screen" SPs in stores now.  Check out this thread over at PA.  It seems pretty legit... they even claim that ebgames is selling them (labeled as graphite ane pearl) on their website but fail to mention they are the new screens...

http://www.penny-arcade.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=198556&start=875

Seriously...  if the screen is as nice as the DS screen I will trade in my old SP on one.... can anyone confirm this craziness?  Was there an announcment that I was under a rock for or something?

This is news to me.  As far as I know, the SP hasn't changed since it first came out.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Interesting.....

But sad.  Now I have to get one of these too.

Edit: For clearification, I don't feel that I'm forced to buy one of these  I probably won't either, I'm just saying.....I want it ;___;

"Someone goofed and they were shipped weeks ahead of advance, that's why there's no official word on it yet"

Three weeks makes a difference?  Were they going to announce "new SP in stores... NOW!  HA HA HA!"?

Nintendo's constant attempts to scam people into buying GBAs is... well I'd say "beginning to annoy me" but we're well past that point.  Only a total tool would buy a GBA over a DS unless they REALLY like GBC games.

I think Nintendo should watch it.  People aren't going to tolerate constant portable revisions forever.  I already don't trust Nintendo portables.  My natural instinct is to wait for Nintendo to release the "real" version later on.  If the general public realizes the same thing it could really hurt Nintendo's portable market.  You don't want the general public to be scared of buying something for fear that two weeks later something better is going to be annouced.  This is the same criticism people have been directing towards MS for launching the X360 a year early.

His link says $99.99 for me.

ebgames.com - $99.99

gamestop.com - $99.99

bestbuy.com - $99.99

There's no listing for it yet at Circuit City.

However, they do have a listing for this:  Nintendo Game Boy® Advance SP (AGTSGKA).  Notice for Availability it says Coming Soon.  I don't have my GBASP handy, but perhaps the model number is different?  Perhaps this is the new backlit GBASP?  Under product features it says front lit, but that doesn't really mean anything (i.e. it could be wrong).

So I'm completely confused... is it definately back lit? or just a brighter front light?

We called around here and had both Gamestop and EBGames tell us they are getting them in tomorrow, and that they will completely replace the current line of colors.

It's back-lit. I can probably understand Ninty's reasoning for this, obviously back lit screens are cheaper than they were when the original SP came out, so they upgraded it. So I guess if people prefer the SP to the Micro, they can now get the brighter screen.

I'm not saying it's RIGHT, of course. I'm a bit irritated that I've got a launch SP with a dimmer screen than the new ones. But quite frankly, I see it as if someone was going to buy an SP over the Micro anyway, now they get a nice little upgrade to the old version. Bonus.

Of course, I think it'd be cool if Nintendo let SP owners who have had the unit for over a year trade ours in for a new version.

And Ian, your views could apply to the iPod, but that seems to be doing well despite it's numerous transformations and revisions.

"And Ian, your views could apply to the iPod, but that seems to be doing well despite it's numerous transformations and revisions."

Different type of market.  People except that sort of thing for regular electronics.  It's not widely accepted for the non-PC game industry.  It goes against the very reason that consoles (and portables which are the same sort of thing) are successful.  You buy it once and you never have to buy another one.  Having several revisions goes against that mentality somewhat.  I think the bigger problem though is that Nintendo is cutting the lives of the portables so short.  Neither the GBC or the GBA lasted five years until they were replaced.  The combination of those two things makes it look like Nintendo is trying to rip everyone off.

How about for us original GBA owners?  If anyone deserves a free trade up it's us.

It is frustrating in that sense, but between my DS and my regular SP I'm pretty happy.  I'd like to get one of these, but I don't think I'll be able to afford it, and that's not too big of a deal.

Also, if you think about how poorly this whole GBA upgrade system is being handled by Nintendo, it can be used as an argument that Nintendo wasn't planning this from the start, which means that this is NOT a scam  Honestly, I had no problem with the Micro, but releasing this at the same time leaves me scratching my head...

I wouldn't call the GBA dead just yet, I'd give it 1-2 more years. But I get Ian's point. ipod aside, this constant revision is getting old. When I traded in my original GBA, I only got 27 dollars for it, lighting device included. Granted this buffered my expense for an SP to a certain degree, but I'm not in the mood to do it again. I'm willing to bet I'll get less than 20 for my SP this time around...

Now I don't expect Nintendo to just let current owners 'upgrade' for nothing, but maybe offer an incentive. Maybe like send it back to Nintendo, you get a voucher to get the better SP up to 25-35 percent off. That sounds fair doesn't it? Won't happen though, Nintendo is hell-bent on making a profit.

I have a 3M "Scotch-Brite Microfiber Cloth" that I picked up for my glasses (just happens to work well on other surfaces, too) at the Wal-Mart Vision Center for no more than a few dollars, if I remember correctly. It works very well.
Thanks for listening.

Geez, so much GBA talk.  Why don't they drop the price of the freaking GC-GB Player?!  IT'S STILL 50 STUPID DOLLARS.

Can't it be like $6 now?

I don't see this as Nintendo ripping people off. The SP > DS right now, and I'm sure there are still people who want to get an sp. So, what's wrong with Nintendo upgrading the system a little? Why is this a big deal?

The only way the different versions of GBA's are ripping people off is when people are stupid enough to buy multiple versions of them.  I think that Nintendo's business tactic is to continue sparking interest in the GBA.

Even if you take away all of the extra sales that were due to people re-buying an upgraded version of the GBA I think that releasing the SP and now the micro will have made more people buy a GBA (as in people who didn't have a previous version).  Nintendo just keeps giving more and more reasons for people who don't own any GBA playing device to jump on the band wagon.

If you have an SP and trade it in to get the "brighter screen" SP then your problem isn't Nintendo ripping you off, it's your freakish obsession with buying useless things...or maybe your freakish obsession with brightness...either way you have some sort of freakish obsession.
