I think neither handheld has break Game Gear numbers, so both are doomed so far

I dont understand why people are buying the PSP.... it seems like the hype really died down and I'm hoping that people will just give up on it. I always ask my gamespot employees how the PSP and DS are sellling, and they always tell me the same thing: they are pushing way more PSPs than DSes... i still don't know if that's just some sales pitch to try to get me to buy the cooler system or if they really know it. still,,, my friend who owns both spends waaayy more time with Advance Wars than Spiderman 2 UMD (or anything else he has for the PSP)
I'll shut up now...

Perhaps the DS is more popular with parents and casuals who are more likely to shop at Walmart than Gamestop?

Well, here is, at the very least, an anecdotal way to determine. Does this gamespot/stop/EB/whatever have any used PSPs in stock? If the store has used PSPs on display, i'd lean more twords the sales pitch idea for this particular store.

PSP is more popular in EB Games/Gamestop whereas Walmart has a partnership with Nintendo.  I was in EB games today, and in the span of 20 minutes they sold 3 PSPs all to moms.  Afterwards, I was walking through Sears and another mom asked about the PSP.  Advertising for the PSP has been more of presence lately as well.  ruby might be right - 360 shortage might be helping the PSP.

Well, I know when the NGage came out, I casually asked about it and they told me it was selling great and that I needed one.

sales peopple will ALWAYS push the more expensive system that has more features as a better buy, because they are paid on commission.  Regarding teh DS, I have a die harsd sony fanboy freind who owns 3 ps2s (actualoy ll my freidns own 2 or three of tehdamn things), and has a psp, and I showed all my psp fanboy freidns my ds and all it took to convert them was wi fi conect and mario kart, they said that psp doesnt have any ghood games right now and teh online is to complicated for them to bother setting it up, where as ds is so simple they loved it.

I actualy convinced one to trade his psp in for a ds so thats a good sign. I also Noticed that at all the used game stores in town, and the stores that rent games also, only have psp umd movies, no games at all. I think thatpeople are starting to realize the psp is pretty worthless as a games machine. On a related note, I just read in Game Informer magazine that Sony is going to redesign the PSP with a built in hard drive or something of the sort, so it looks like they are sticking with PSP as a Tech Device rather than a games system, so that should seal its fate I think.

I still can't wait to see what christmas sales are like though, if DS stomps psp and developers start losing money on making psp games then we should start to see a major shift. By The Way does anybody have the sales data for original Game Boy verses Game Gear? I thought they were pretty close for a while but could be wrong.

Remember to take into consideration that the Mario Kart DS and Nintendogs games sold in the bundles aren't counted in software charts.

Also, here's an example of the Nintendogs effect, in France

The last little boost at the end is when Mario Kart came out.

I'm going to make a UK graph soon!

Oh yeah also, Nintendogs is in short supply over there and is going on ebay for $95 US.

Why is that labelled "W36 W37 W38"...? "Week" is "semaine" in french.

Oh yeah also, Nintendogs is in short supply over there and is going on ebay for $95 US.

Keep in mind that it costs ~50$ in stores. Not as much of an increase as US based readers would think.

If you look back he asked how much it sold in Japan not in the U.S.

As of right now RE4 is selling the opposite in the U.S as it is in Japan.

Wow.  Impressive DS numbers.

And just so you guys know.  RE4 I believe sold more than a million worldwide on the GC.  While the PS2 version may be selling ok in Japan, in America it got outsold by a two-month old Mario Baseball in its launch month, and performed similarly elsewhere.  Unless it sells a million in Japan alone, it has no hope of achieving the GC version's sales, I'd wager.  I hope Capcom thought it was worth it.  (rant over)

Maybe that was all the reasoning they needed. Japanese gamers and investors are in Sony's deep pockets. It certainly wasn't done for the fans, unless Capcom just enjoys a good game of musical consoles.

Anyone have a tally of the total GCN->PS2 porting disasters?
