Whoa, GBA! I KNEW they should've called the DS the Gameboy DS. I KNEW it. Time to rename!

Ouch for the PSP vs. DS.

Alright guys, NPD just put out a notice saying the numbers are over inflated and that they are NOT CORRECT. Not sure if this is across the board or just specific platforms. Hopefully they'll have the right numbers soon.

The PSP has more life in it than I expected.

On a related note, in it's one week of October sales, GTA sold 158,400 units, and it sold 246,081 units in November, which means it's total is now at 404,481, and it's the biggest game on the PSP (which isn't really saying a lot).

REggie posted some stats for the USA in his speech Monday....

"16. August to October handheld units sales (USA). GBA has 41%; DS has 31%; PSP has 28%."

28% is actually more than I expected.

Funny how firefox is endlessly hyped as an IE killer when it only has about 10% market penetration, wheras the psp is widley hailed as a massive failure even though it's apparently taken 28% of the market from Nintendo.

edit: wait, sorry, those numbers are just for a single month. I'm an idiot.

Wandering, it's also important to note that the comparison doesn't represent 'taken' marketshare. A lot of PSP owners probably never owned a GameBoy, therefore Nintendo lost no customers. The real question is what amount of PSP owners bought one INSTEAD of a DS. I think it'd be far less, considering the gaming factor.

I find it quite sad that a basic rehash of GTA3 is selling so well on PSP. Shows how hurting the PSP is for good games that are not quick rehashes or ports.

But it's not sad that a TRUE rehash of Super Mario 64 sold quite well on the NDS? Anyway, the PSP hasn't TAKEN any of the market share from Nintendo, if anything, it's created it's own market. I don't think the PSP has actually hurt any of Nintendo's handheld sales.

The market is definitely tired of Mario.

Apparently the "mistake" numbers were a trap. They gave everyone a different set of "faulty" numbers, and then waited to see which ones showed up on the internet. The responsible parties have been shot, the leak is plugged, and there will be no more NPD numbers on the internet. For now.

Yup, we all thought it was a little too good to be true when all the system numbers were released so quick. Smart move on NPD's part, but a royal screw job for the gaming public.

As for the guy that tried to turn the GTA/Mario 64 DS comaprison into an arguement over mario burn out, you're missing the point. It's simply hypocritical of people to rag on Liberity City for being glorified rehash when the best selling title thus far on the DS is just that. Granted it's good rehash, but rehash all the same.

NPD is here...

Xbox 360 = 326,000
PS2 = 531,000
Xbox = 197,000
GCN = 272,000
GBA = 690,000 (approx)

Huh wow... the DS is outselling the X360. And the GBA is owning everything else.

Well, turns out MKDS was a MASSIVE FLOP! This was supposed to elevate DS sales to giant levels, but it hasn't done anything at all, and if Mario Kart can't, nothing will. No Nintendogs to be seen either, I guess they were just a fad. Pack your things Nintendo, handheld market is crumbling and there's no safe haven anymore! GBA sales are down 500,000 from last year, so DS has taken those away, nobody is falling for this "release lots of games" BS, the three pillars are crumbling all over each other, and Xbox 360 has crushed the fourth before it's even been built, look at that MASSIVE software tie ratio! Third parties would be stupid NOT to put all their games on Xbox 360 now, since everyone would buy them.

#1 Star Wars Battlefront 2? Jesus christ, that game is TERRIBLE, what is going on in this industry?

I don't think the NPD is a good indicator of the market anymore.  When they got their numbers screwed up, I stumbled upon an article which said that they only got 53% of the market's numbers, and that they estimated what they didn't have (which includes... lesse.... WALMART and TOYS R US and AMAZON), which is by no means an accurate picture.

Mario Kart is actually outselling GTA, considering that they do not count the DS Mario Kart bundle as a sale of the game, and that is a pretty hot item that has sold as well as the Game itself, I reckon.

EDIT: Oh and the NPD has this disgusting habit of ranking things in terms of how much revenue is generated over how much the game actually sold.  Which means GBA and DS games have to sell 33% more just to even get ranked alongside Console/PSP titles.
