well its only been out for a little over a year and 1/2 and its already @ > 1/3 of the way there and thats not even counting the amount sold that we will find out about on thursday.

If it keeps selling at this rate, not only will it sky rocket past GBA in record time, it will eclipse PS2 especially given the amount of time PS2 has been out for vs DS/L.

Of course this is the problem with business.  Good times may mean higher costs, and then you enter a balancing act.  You've got a hot economy right now, so the cost of opening a new factory (or whatever it would take to satisfy demand in Japan) is going to be really high.  I agree Nintendo should probably do more to take advantage of this situation, but it seems like the company has been taken by surprise.  I imagine (or at least hope) Nintendo's working on something to fix this problem right now.
That's my opinion, not yours.
Now Playing: The Adventures of Link, Super Street Fighter 4, Dragon Quest IX

I'm really surprised to see so many Xbox 360 games in the NPD numbers.  Five out of the top six games?  Ten out of the top 25?  Geez.  For a system that sucks so bad, people sure are buying a lot of expensive games.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

There's a few reasons for the 360 domination.

A.  360 games cost 20% percent more than PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, and PSP games.  Actually most likely more as these systems have flooded the budget price $20-30 market while a budget game on the xbox cost the same as the other consoles.  And we know NPD ranks on money.

B.  Like it or not, the 360 is selling loads more than the other consoles.  People are holding out buying the current consoles to save money for the next one.  Usually when a new console launches it typically has an attach rate 2.  People on the older consoles are probably saving up to buy a game every couple of months.

C.  Lastly, the games on the chart suck.  Notably an opinion, but New Super Mario is the only thing I'm interested in at full price.  I'll wait for the games to come down or get some of the sweet looking games that will come out during the holiday period.  Which incidently sells multiple times April's numbers.

OUCH!!! DS copping it HARD! Nintendo are in trouble now. DS is getting absolutely destroyed by the GBA SP, PS2, and PSP (if all of THOSE are considering dead systems, i'd hate to think of what the DS has become), whereas DS Lite sales were split in HALF. Welp, it's over. The Japanese public have decided that they aren't going to put up with Nintendos bs shipping "problems" (more like tactics, bad ones) anymore. PSP and Xbox 360, it is your turn to shine. At least Nintendo have Europe right? For now at least.

Lower shipment than usual due to the US / Aus DS Lite launches? Probably not, but maybe!

Good news..
Quote

New Super Mario Bros. jumps into number-one slot of Best Buy's bestseller list; DS duo leads Xbox 360- and PS2-heavy top 10.

For months, games for the Nintendo DS have topped the bestseller lists in Japan, with brain-training games showing sustained popularity. Now that trend is being repeated across the Pacific. According to online sales figures reported to GameSpot by national retailer Best Buy, the two most popular games for the week of May 14 were both for Nintendo's dual-screen portable. New Super Mario Bros. was the number-one game, followed by Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, which has remained in the top 10 since its release a month ago.

But while the DS ruled the roost at retailers this week, games for Nintendo's other platforms were nowhere to be found in the top 10. The remaining eight slots were split between Sony's current-generation console and Microsoft's next-gen machine. Places three through six were all Xbox 360 titles--The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, The collector's edition of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Madden NFL 06. Behind the quartet was a trio of PlayStation 2 titles--Kingdom Hearts II (seventh), Madden NFL 2006 (eighth), and Genji Dawn of the Samurai (ninth). Finally, bringing up the rear was recurring favorite Call of Duty 2 for the Xbox 360.
I said that I would give up on the DS for the North American market if Mario and the DS Lite didn't make an impact. Well, I guess it's not over yet.
