In other news, New Super Mario Bros has 1.3 million pre-orders in Japan.

Yet Nintendo are only shipping 800,000 on launch day...

Incredible.. but all I want to see now is what impact Mario and the DS Lite have in North America. I the DS doesn't sell through the roof I will be very disappointed.

Is that the highest pre-order count for a handheld? If not, then what is and for what game on what system?

And while you're at it, how does that compare to the highest pre-orderd game on a console? and what game was that and for which console?

Thanx in advance

And there are people that try to argue that noone cares about Mario anymore. That spinoff's are killing Mario's mass appeal to everyone... <looks at Ian primarily>

I'm not denying that to you, personally, Mario may be tired and boring, etc, etc, etc... But trying to impose your own feelings as the feelings of everyone just doesn't work in reality.

1.3 million!? Yikes! Didn't AC:WW have like 1.2 or something? It was around a million anyway. That 1.3 will go up too, it doesn't even have a set release date there, just this month!

DSL sales that week are going to be ginormous...

ACWW had about 500,000 :P but I can't remember the exact number.

I think it is the highest for a handheld game, possibly Pokemon could be higher. Wind Waker previously held the record for most pre-orders on a console at 550,000, but then Halo 2 broke that supposedly, but MS didn't release the numbers, i'll assume they were less than 1.3 million. Pokemon DS will probably break it again.

From the horrible translation I got of the article linked, it would appear that the 1.3 million pre-orders is just basically what retailers have ordered of the game, n'est-ce pas?

I think San Andreas had more preorders than Halo 2.  I could be mistaken.

It appears it could mean copies ordered from stores, regardless, it's going to be big, stores don't order that many if the demand isn't that high. It should outsell Super Mario 64 DS easily, which will make me happy enough.

New SMB is already #1 at amazon.co.jp (above both Brain Trainings and Mother 3), and it isn't out for another 3 weeks!

For some anecdotal data: Today I overheard a conversation in a store where parents tried to buy a DS but the clerk told them they're all out. Also I heard a boy who wanted to get a PSP but his mother wouldn't let him because he'd have to buy new games for that. HAHA!

I just decided to reminisce through the many pages here and it's funny, looking back now, at people all concerned over the PSP outselling the DS in early 05 in Japan for 10 straight weeks.  People were worried about things that I can't even remember now.  The DS is a phenomenom that erased my memory!!!

Actual sales numbers are apparently delayed due to "goldenweek" or some such crap in Japan,

DS > 200,000 + sales shortages AGAIN

Sales shortages STILL? Gee whiz, it's like Nintendo is practically giving up on the handheld market, it's quite obvious where their focus is NOT, and that's handheld production. After two months, they should have it sorted, it's just pure laziness and as a consumer, I don't have to put up with that, and I wont.

They obviously aren't too concerned about getting DS's to consumers, this mindset will hurt them in the long run because it will affect their bottom line and the developers will have no reason to not think Nintendo are about to do the same thing with thier home consoles, and I could understand if every developer dropped Nintendo right now. It's only the logical thing to do in situations like these where a company just doesn't meet your needs and offer the right type of platform.

In short, Nintendo might as well cancel Wii because it's not going to sell one system, so shipping 0 they can still say "demand can not be met" and pretend things are rosy while Sony continues raking in the real cash with the PSP and PS3. As a longtime Nintendo fan, I just can't support them anymore after this new direction of their systems selling out, and my anticipation for E3 has been put out like a fire brigade attacking a flaming toaster.

BTW the only reason there's more than 1 PSP game in the top 30 there is some weird new bundle or price drop or colour of PSP that was released there last week, I can't remember specifics because the PSP isn't really relevant anymore

Well I suppose theres a limitation on how many DS-Lites they can produce, seeing the still have to stockpile them for there most important market, Australia, and put some aside for the USA as well.

i find it weird that so many quirky games are still being made for the PSP especially considering what's the real seller in Japan.

Man, in the next couple of weeks, English Training is going to break a million copies!!  That is just crazy.  And Brain Training 2 is going to pass up Brain Training 1 by next week.  I'm also guessing that by the end of the year, Animal Crossing will pass 3 million copies sold.
