Japan has just a terrible taste, is shocking how they produce the best games in the world, but the highest selling genre is still the outdated turn based rpgs, Ive heard FFXII has some real-time elments though

They buy the games for the stories, not the outdated combat systems.

Hell, Xenosagas 1&2 might as well have had a system where you press any button to win a battle and continue to the next cutscene.

They probably make fun of us for buying the same football game every year.

I love those turn based RPGs myself. Baten Kaitos, Xenosaga and DQ8 were some of the finest games made this generation.

The stories are important, but then there's games like Star Ocean, which had a story I was really getting into and a battle system that made the game virtually unplayable. I think I'd pay somebody $20 to play through the damned thing start to finish just so I could watch the story unfold.

I think the Rev might be a great system for those turn based RPGs too... if you think about it, a lot of the complex controls are pointless in the genre, you could probably play a lot of these games just with the one-handed Revmote.

I also think a series like Dragon Quest would do well to switch platforms. I know it sells insanely well in Japan, but in the US it seems to get buried under a sea of games with bigger budgets. DQ8 would've been the centerpiece RPG on the Cube, while on the PS2 it was just a way for people to get the FF12 preview.

Dunno, I found myself on the brink of death in that game much more often than in FFX (non-boss battles, obviously).

Shouldn't they be making fun of the Japanese who're buying Winning Eleven twice a year? Japan is just as mainstream as the US, if not more so. But there seems to be a better market for less popular stuff. I guess that can be attributed to the lack of the stereotypical gamer. Anyone is likely to play games there, particularly now with the success of the DS. I hope the Rev will do the same here.

I didn't play either but I did have a friend who used the entire playing of Xenosaga 2 as a screensaver. Thus, I saw it frequently and it always seemed like very small bits of gameplay through very long cutscenes.

The cutscenes seem to get shorter once the game gets going but some parts (space combat, for example) should have ben playable instead of cutscenes...

Looks like Pokemon Rangers is starting out with 193,000 sales in its first week.  Animal Crossing WW is still a juggurnaut with 82,000+ sold and Brain Training 1 & 2 continue to sell well.

Guess it's another week of huge DS and DSL sales in Japan.

Still amazes me how bad the 360 is doing there, anyway it's always great to see the number of DS' Nintendo has been able to sell there, hope the steam on the DS and DSL continue.

Also, nice to see the lack of sarcasm Mario.

What amazes me is that the DSL outsold every other system (including the original DS) combined.

Its pretty amazing really. I can't believe how well the DSL and DS are doing. I mean the DS alone is surpasing PSP sales. I could really see the Revolution pulling a DS, I mean it may not be as succesful, but there is no way its going to pull a GCN.

For practical purposes I don't see Sony giving up on the PSP for awhile. Anyhow, it's sold well enough that it's probably not losing them any money (the same probably can not be said of the retailers with the huge UMD sections).

I would say the only way the PSP gets EOLed early is if the PS3 gets off to a really poor start and Sony corporate decides to pull the plug on the whole game division.

Sony will probably release the next PSP version with less emphasis on the UMD aspect.

I'm a little sad that Xbox sales surpassed GBA sales.  If I'm not mistaken, that's the first time this has happened in a while.

The dropping of UMD support by major movie studios further fuels the theory that Sony is buying back its own PSP units in an attempt to attract more developers.

It's clearly not working, as people wind up looking at the sales numbers of games and movies and those are terrible.

Not necessarily. UMD movies were a stupid idea in first place. Even if I had a PSP I wouldn't buy any of them. The PSP can be used as a media playback device so you can theoretically use one without any UMDs, others will have one with only one game and no movies, etc.

Thing is, with as many PSP sales as Sony would like to boast, you'd think that it would be enough to warrant continuing production of UMD movies.

I'd expect that SOMEONE would be buying PSP movies if they only trail the DS by 3.5 mil units sold, but judging by what the studios are doing, my theory still stands.

There's not nearly enough PSPs out there to warrant UMD movie sales if you ask me. UMD movies were just a stupid idea, especially if standalone UMB players come out (actually I think there are some). Why invent a new format greatly inferior to  the soon to be obsolete DVD?

I don't know about you, but I haven't heard of a lot of people actually ready to accept HD DVDs or Blu-Ray with open arms, even if they are still aways from release.
