I don’t watch basketball either, and it really stings that that’s the one sports thread on here that gets regular discussion.

There's been a sudden huge influx of spambots posting streams of rodeos tonight, and I'm kind of curious why.

I got a Hori Split Pad Pro over the weekend, and so far I'm very happy with it. I almost exclusively play my Switch in handheld mode, and these are a lot more comfortable than Joy-Cons, with better sticks and a real D-Pad. If you spend a lot of time in handheld mode I highly recommend getting these.

Do you have to take it off in order to slide it into the dock?  Lately i've been playing mostly handheld, there's definitely a cramp factor to holding the switch for longer than an hour.

No, the handles go down a bit but the dock raises the system enough that they’re still above the surface it’s on. As long as you’ve got room to accommodate the fact that they make it wider it’ll fit in the dock just fine.

I am curious why Magiccow thinks Odyssey is one of the worst 3D Mario games.

I kind of agree with that statement, but just because the 3D Mario games have almost all been amazing. The only one I would rate as less than great is Sunshine, and I'd put all but that and maybe one or two others above Odyssey, but Odyssey's still fantastic, it's just an incredibly high bar.

All those accounts would still be relevant on their current platforms, but it doesn't seem like people are using the threads.

I prefer Odyssey to Breath of the Wild too, and you can't ban me.

I have had nothing but good experiences with Nintendo refurbished hardware. With refurbished it really varies depending on who’s doing it, but Nintendo’s standards for it seem to be really, really high.

They're both excellent games, but I think the main difference between them is that Odyssey is largely just a refinement of the existing 3D Mario formula, while Breath of the Wild is revolutionary to the Zelda series. I kind of agree with Khush that you'll probably enjoy Odyssey more if you play it before BotW.

FX has a new comedy coming soon developed by Paul Simms, creator of NWR forum favorite NewsRadio. Not many details apart from that, but that alone is enough to get me excited.

Whoever's making these spambots seems to think there's a big potential audience for the Grey Cup here.

I went with Grookey. This might be the first time I ever picked the grass starter, I just wasn’t much of a fan of the others’ designs.

Movies & TV / Re: Disney+

The previous streaming home of The Simpsons, the aptly named Simpsons World, included both the original 4:3 versions and the 16:9 ones they used for the reruns on FX, and I imagine Disney+ will end up giving both options. I know some people really don't like having the bars on the side, even if stretching it out of cropping it compromises the artistic intent.

Apparently you actually can get the bundle discount for Disney+ with the ad-free version of Hulu, which makes this more tempting for me, but I still don't think there's enough on there to make it worth it to me right now. I love The Simpsons, but I already have the DVDs of them and they're in the right aspect ratio when I watch those versions.

TalkBack / Cryogear (Switch) Review
« on: November 12, 2019, 08:07:15 AM »

A Metroidvania game with interesting ideas but sadly held back by its execution.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/52193/cryogear-switch-review

The Metroid-style has become one of the most acclaimed genres in gaming, but also one of the hardest to do well. So many details need to be executed just right to pull off this kind of game, and that’s especially true when attempting to add new mechanics on top of that. Cryogear has some interesting ideas on how to add to the formula, but sadly it doesn’t always stick the landing.

Set in a sci-fi future, Cryogear has you playing as a series of clones fighting through a dystopian wasteland full of hostile robots as you try to take down an evil empire. The map is split into a series of interconnected sectors, each with its own theme. Once you’ve activated uplinks in a sector, you can warp back to it at any time, which can make backtracking easier. However, the lack of distinction between areas sometimes leads to needing multiple attempts to remember which one you need to go to.

Your clone character can be upgraded in numerous ways over the course of his journey. There is a leveling mechanic that boosts your stats, as well as a series of skill trees to add new abilities and perks. While this adds a lot of options, it doesn’t seem to have a huge impact on gameplay outside of a few specific upgrades. There are also various pieces of equipment and weapons, some of which need to be crafted with components you pick up along the way.

No matter what trappings may be added, the most important component of a Metroid-style game is how it plays, and sadly that’s where Cryogear comes up short. Combat is simple, with only a few types of weapons and a shield, but it never really feels satisfying, with the guns in particular barely seeming to do any damage until you level them up. The biggest problem, however, is the platforming mechanics, where the jumping controls are too stiff to easily pull off even some of the basic maneuvers necessary to traverse these areas.

Cryogear brings some interesting new ideas to the genre, but unfortunately it doesn’t execute them well enough to really stand out. There’s a lot of depth to the gameplay, but most of it feels unnecessary and doesn’t influence the gameplay substantially. I’d love to see some of these ideas implemented more effectively, but as is it’s hard to widely recommend.

I've never eaten or intentionally killed a cat!

The fact that you felt the need to specify “intentionally” is a little worrisome. How many cats have you killed by accident?

HBO Go is the same as the cable subscription, it's just the app you use to stream when you have that.

I like Fusion a lot. I think a lot of the criticisms are overblown. There's still plenty of exploration and open-endedness, especially toward the end. If I were to criticize it I'd actually go the other way and say it played it too safe. It had an interesting concept but most of the things it changed were just window dressing, and in the end the game was very similar to the ones it came between.

20
I didn't really care that much, Pokepal just gave me a nice opportunity to take a gratuitous shot at you and I couldn't resist.

I seem to remember somebody saying that, but I can't be sure since someone deleted my signature when he or she was making a lot of silly changes to the forums.

HBO has always depended on having one or two tentpole shows that keep people subscribed, and I'm not sure they have any right now since Game of Thrones ended. Westworld, I guess, though that's a far cry from some of the giants they've had over the years.

23
Reading threads is for suckers.

24
This game is kind of confusing and I'm not sure I fully grasp all the mechanics in play here, and it seems like there's no clear reason to vote for anyone right now.

25
I really am sorry about that. With a volunteer site sometimes things are going to fall through the cracks, but I can't blame anyone who wants to vote me out over my inability to promote this game.
