Podcast Discussion / Episode 123: Luigi's Lost Mind
« on: February 02, 2014, 03:10:53 AM »

Sanity effects are in full force when Josh Max comes to play.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/radiotrivia/36454

You can find the screenshot referenced during the discussion of the fourth game here.

Did you like this episode's game selections? Let your fellow listeners know in TalkBack! Think you've got a better choice? Then send it my way and your request might be on the next episode of Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition!  Heck, throw in a question and specific songs if you want.  Just remember, it has to be a game found on a Nintendo system in North America (unless we say otherwise)!

TalkBack / Staff Sez: What Game Would Make the Best/Worst Anime?
« on: January 30, 2014, 12:48:35 PM »

It's time to power up! The new Staff Sez has arrived!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/36440

What's happened this week? Now let's see... Bravely Default has been released, Nintendo's earnings have been released and now this Staff Sez has been released! What an eventful week!

This time I asked the site "What Nintendo Game would make the best or worst anime?" Check out their responses below! What do you think? Let us know what game you think would make the best or worst anime?

Neal "Hiten-Mitsurugi Style" Ronaghan

Star Fox

Justin "Rasengan" Berube

Best - Punch-Out!!

Worst - F-Zero…. Oh wait.

Carmine "Bankai" Red

Family Detective Club… Because I've been wondering who Ayumi Tachibana was ever since seeing her Trophy in Smash Bros. Melee.

Alex "Fist of the Nose Hair" Culafi

Best - Kid Icarus

Worst - Donkey Kong Jr. Math

J.P. "Kamehameha" Corbran

I'd like to see Metroid done up this way, mostly just to take in the reactions of fans of the series.

Andrew "Gomu-Gomu-no" Brown

Best - Metroid (Kid Icarus already has several, sort of.)

Worst - Mario Paint

James "Shining Finger" Dawson

Best - Metroid (Chicks in power armors work so well in anime, just look at Bubblegum Crisis.)

Worst - Style Savvy (I shouldn't have to explain this one.)

Tom "Spirit Detective" Malina

Best - Custom Robo - sounds exactly like the sort of idea animes love to run with.

Worst - Kuru Kuru Kururin - uh... I don't really know how this would work; maybe it would actually be the best idea.

James "Time to Duel" Jones

Best - Fire Emblem - it basically is already.

Worst - Kid Icarus - we already saw this. I wanted to strangle Pit.

Danny "Section 9" Bivens

Best - The Mysterious Murasame Castle (Nazo no Murasame Jō) - It's a game about aliens, samurai, ninjas. Boom. Perfect for anime.

Worst - Brain Age - though a show starring a floating Kawashima animated head could be awesome (?)

Kim "Equivalent Exchange" Keller

Best: Professor Layton - it has a movie already, but I love the twists and turns of the games so much, I'm totally down for a new weekly obsession

Worst: Cooking Mama - her demonic angry eyes and passive aggressive caption "Don't worry, Mama will fix it" make me believe she has some issues that are best left buried.

Michael "Bebop Cola" Cole

Best: - Smash Bros. Why not? The series' premise is action figures that fight each other via a kid's imagination. Seems like that could be extended a la Toy Story or Muppet Babies to imaginary misadventures of odd Nintendo character team-ups, Brave and the Bold style.... Or maybe we would just get Captain N out of it :/

Worst - Star Tropics. I love the series, but I wouldn't want to see its corny bananas-in-ears humor extended into a full TV show.

These games will never collect dust over at the NWR offices.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/36392

This week a snowstorm hit the northeast US, Rick and Morty switched roles and Josh asked a brand new question to the NWR staff! The question was "What's the one game you could play over and over and never tire of?" Everyone's answers are below!

What is your one game that you never tire of? Let us know in the comments below!

Andrew Brown

Donkey Kong Country 2. I replay that almost annually.

Mike Sklens

Rock Band 3. I could play it forever if allowed.

Neal Ronaghan

It used to be Super Mario RPG. Now it's probably the latest version of Madden and I'm not super proud to admit that.

Andy Goergen

Geometry War 2.  RIP Bizarre Creations.

Justin Baker

Tetris! It truly never gets old.

Alex Culafi

Grand Theft Auto IV. Haven't fully stopped playing since 2008.

James Dawson

Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. It's multiplayer is incredible.

J.P. Corban

There are several for me, but the big one would be Sid Meier's Civilization V. A ton of depth and different ways to play, and every new game is unlike any you've played before.

Zack Miller

Honestly, probably MGS3. I discover new things every time I play because you can play it so many ways.

Justin Berube

Super Smash Bros. Melee. Back when I was still in my prime I know I put thousands of hours into it. I maxed out the play counter on multiple copies.

James Jones

Ogre Battle 64. It's a pretty well-documented addiction.

So many games and so little time!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/36370

Now that the holidays have come and gone it's time we got back to what's really important - video games. With all the new games that have come out, we've all got quite the helping on our proverbial plates.

This week I asked the NWR Staff "What's the top game on your backlog list right now?" Here's what they said!

What's the top game on your backlog list? Tell us in the comments!

Neal "The Kingpin" Ronaghan

Persona 4 Golden and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask

Alex "Carnage" Culafi

Been trying to beat Pushmo for a while now and I'm near the end. By the time you get to the final chapters, Pushmo pushes back.

Scott "Scorpion" Thompson

Finally putting the finishing touches on Persona 4 Golden, so it's nearly time to start A Link Between Worlds.

J.P. "Venom" Corbran

It's been a while, but I'm getting the urge to play through the second-best game of the 2000s, Metroid Prime.

Justin "Doctor Octopus" Berube

I started both, but need to finish The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.

Zach "The Green Goblin" Miller

Metal Gear Rising is slowly being completed.

Tom "Electro" Malina

SteamWorld Dig. Should have believed the people who sung its praises when it was first released.

Becky "Doctor Doom" Hollada

Etrian Odyssey. Never played it because of how long it took me to scrounge up money for my DS Lite way back when, and I got it for Christmas this year.

Danny "Sandman" Bivens

Too many games...but I'm going to try to tackle Link Between Worlds next.

James "Rhino" Dawson

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, I'm playing it in anticipation for Bravely Default.

Justin "Lizard" Baker

I still need to complete Pokémon Y! Every time I sit down to play it I just end up breeding Bulbasaurs and running around.

Goodbye 2013! Hello brand spankin' new games of 2014!

A new year has dawned and it's time to look towards the future! 2013 gave us a lot of good, some bad, and a bunch of weird games. But what will 2014 have in store for us?

The NWR staff was asked the question "What game do you hope will make your 2014 complete?" Take a look at their answers!

What games are you looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below!

J.P. "Popping the Champagne" Corban

FIFA 15

Zachary "5...4...3...2...1" Miller

A good, new Metroid game.

Justin "Times Square" Berube

N64 and GBA Virtual Console games. Remember when that was supposed to be a thing?

Alex "Baby New Year" Culafi

Persona Q, Persona 5, Persona: Dancing All Night, EDF 2025, Hotline Miami 2, Yoshi's New Island, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Screw it, I'm putting it all down!

Neal "Year of the Horse" Ronaghan

Something I haven't even heard of yet.

Andy "Aw, 2013 is Already Over?" Goergen

Zelda II: Zero Mission

J.P. “Dreamin’ of a White Christmas” Corbran

For the Sounders to sign a top tier right midfielder.

The Packers to make the playoffs to make up for Neal's shitty month.

Alex “Krampus” Culafi

Zack “Hermey- the Elf who wanted to be a dentist” Kaplan

A good Family Guy game, on the Wii U, that pays you to play it.

James “Yukon Cornelious” Dawson

A **** with Mazinger Z and Gypsy Danger being bros on it.

Justin “Ghost of Christmas” Baker

A DS player for my Wii U already! Come on, Nintendo, I know you have one!

Andrew “Rudolph” Brown

GBA and N64 Virtual Console. How about cross-platform already?

Zach “Abominable Snowman” Miller

For Monoclonius crassus to be confirmed as a valid taxon.

TalkBack / My Legend of Zelda Experience at NYCC 2013
« on: November 26, 2013, 07:11:43 AM »

The Legend of Zelda ahs the best fans. And that's a fact!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/36074

At New York Comic Con 2013 I had the pleasure of going to The Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds panel. It was a fantastic experience to say the least.

During the whole con I was pretty under the weather and was popping pills to keep me awake and alive. Luckily, I had two pills left when I first got in line. As the line progressed, and I made my way closer to the room, I felt the cold hand of death on my shoulder. As I reached into my bag I realized I was out of water, leaving me with nothing to down the pills with.  But then some nice girl saw my plight, put down her 3DS, and offered me some of her water. Already this panel was showing me the good in Zelda fans.

As we made our way in I saw fans of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Young kids dressed as Link, hoping to get a glimpse of the new game they would be getting for Christmas. There were the “hardcore” Zelda fans that I overheard talking about the overwhelming evidence scattered through previous Zelda games that suggested that Majora’s Mask 3D was in the future. There were even some people playing Pokémon X and Y a day early (lucky!) and were there to absorb any and all Nintendo information they could. And then there was me. Stuffy, tired, and holding on to dear life all to hear about the brand new Legend of Zelda adventure.

As I sat down I could feel the unbridled joy and anticipation that filled the room. As the noise started to swell a figure emerged from behind the projector screen. He was majestic. He controlled the feelings of the entire room with every gesture he made. He was Eiji Aonuma. The sight of him incited cheers. The man responsible for the new wave of The Legend of Zelda titles had appeared before us and he was just as excited as we were.

After the presentations and breaking news, Aonuma welcomed a few questions. In the 15-minute slot he only answered three people. I was number four, but some butt-head decided to ask needlessly complicated questions that everyone knew Aonuma couldn’t answer. Oh well. Live and let live, right? Aside from that one guy, everyone in the room was nice, almost to a fault. People allowed entire rows to exit the room before them. Aonuma and the rest of the panel took pictures with fans dressed as their favorite characters. Aonuma even played with a little Toon Link doll during the presentation. (It was adorable. Don’t ask me how, it just was.) The whole experience was phenomenal. One thing fact that will ever be solidified in my mind is Zelda fans are some of the nicest fans out there. Except for that one guy. What a butt-head.

TalkBack / Pokémon X and Y is Good For You (According to the Internet)
« on: November 12, 2013, 02:16:43 PM »

It's time to talk about some serious stuff.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/35950

As I looked through my Google Alerts for Pokémon over the past couple of weeks, I’ve stumbled upon quite a few interesting articles. Some of them discussed how the games were bringing together religious groups. Others discussed what it could teach players both young and old. Some articles even suggested the game’s characters gave solid life advice. I just don’t see how the new generation of Pokémon games have brought all these people to the same conclusion. It’s absurd.

I will admit that the games force people into using a bit more strategy than they would in real life. Determining what types of Pokémon your party will consist of and figuring out how to go about collecting them all can give your brain muscles a solid exercise. Hell, I’ll even admit that the games make you style conscious. Maybe this can translate into players’ real lives by forcing them to look at themselves in the mirror and thinking twice before leaving the house in pajama bottoms and a hoodie. Maybe some players went out and bought some pants that actually fit them. Maybe they even picked up a few collared shirts. But Pokémon X and Y changing lives? That’s just silly.

Some articles are claiming it’s bringing people together in a major way. These articles are saying that since Pokémon X and Y were released worldwide simultaneously that it brought players together as a whole. Now I understand the sentiment, but I think that’s just insane. Have I contributed to a few websites that didn’t know if Scizor could participate in air battles? Maybe. Have I talked to people all over the world in the first few weeks the game was released in an attempt to gain more information? Sure, who didn’t? But this whole “changing the world” thing is just bananas.

Scizors can't participate in air battles. Just so you know.

Friends, I’m not sure if you’ll believe me when I say I’ve read an article that claims that Pokémon X and Y is responsible for them losing weight, but I hope you do. Some writers claim that the game forces them to look at their character and realize how little exercise they’re getting while they watch their avatar battle the elements as they run across the Kalos region. This has got to be the most farfetched thing I’ve ever heard. Nobody loses weight because of video games. I’ve lost a few pounds recently, but that’s no one’s accomplishment but my own. Sure, I’ve been playing Pokémon on the treadmill. And yeah, I’ve only been going to the gym to find time to play Pokémon for extended periods of time. So what? It’s just a game.

This whole “Pokémon changed my life” thing is going to fade soon, mark my words! Then everyone who wrote one of those articles is going to look quite silly. Just you wait, Internet! I bet they’ll feel pretty silly once they realize how preposterous their articles sound.

TalkBack / Re: How I Learned to Accept My Inevitable Death by Pokemon
« on: November 01, 2013, 10:04:19 AM »
Dusknoir is described as an antenna to the other world. While that is creepy, it's just not as creepy as some of the others on the list.
Shedinja is a floating reanimated husk. It's pretty creepy in that sense. And yeah it has that soul stealing stuff... but is stealing a soul creepier than displaying your prey after the hunt?
Darkrai causes nightmares. While the definition of nightmares involves fear, I don't feel like giving people a bad night's sleep is worse than condemning them to death.
Cressalia... I actually don't understand how you could find it creepy. It's associated with giving people good dreams.

TalkBack / How I Learned to Accept My Inevitable Death by Pokemon
« on: October 31, 2013, 04:36:00 AM »

Something to help you sleep at night.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/35853/how-i-learned-to-accept-my-inevitable-death-by-pokemon

It’s Halloween, the time of year when everyone’s brains turn to creepy crawlies and the kinds of things your nightlight kept away as a kid. People usually turn to haunted houses and horror movies for a good fright, but, honestly, you don't have to look any further than Pokémon to get a good chill down your spine.

These games were meant for kids… right?

Absol - “Disaster Pokémon”

“It senses coming disasters and appears before people only to warn them of impending danger.”

Showing up right before huge natural disasters strike has lead Absol to being mistaken as a bringer of doom, which makes it downright creepy. Because it senses disaster and comes to warn people, you know every time you see an Absol something’s coming and it’s probably going to kill people. Despite the fact that Absol itself doesn’t bring disaster, it still portends doom and as we’ve seen in films like The Ring, knowing something bad is coming is almost just as bad as the thing itself.

Lampent – “Lamp Pokémon”

“It arrives near the moment of death and steals spirit from the body. The spirits it absorbs fuel its baleful fire. It hangs around hospitals waiting for people to pass on.”

Lampent is the evolved form of cute little Litwick, a candle Ghost Pokémon with emo bangs, and it is pretty much just as cute. Not exactly the most frightening Pokémon wandering around in a world that gave us Cofagrigus, the floating sarcophagus.

Except a sarcophagus that tricks unsuspecting grave robbers isn’t nearly as creepy as something that steals souls. Lampent lurks around hospitals to snap up the spirits of dying people and looks adorable while doing it.

So if this thing stalks people who are soon to die just so it can eat their souls…why is it hanging out with you?

Honedge – “Sword Pokémon”

“Apparently this Pokémon is born when a departed spirit inhabits a sword. It attaches itself to people and drinks their life force. If anyone dares to grab its hilt, it wraps a blue cloth around that person's arm and drains that person's life energy completely.”

Nothing looks outwardly creepy about a sword Pokémon right? Of course not. It’s a Pokémon that brings all the badassery of sword play into the Pokémon world! Just don’t touch it. Honedge is actually a possessed sword that is out to kill you. It lies in wait until it can attach itself to an unsuspecting person and suck away their life energy completely, and once it drains its trainer to a lifeless husk, it just floats along until some other poor fool decides to catch it.

Haunter – “Gas Pokémon”

“In total darkness, where nothing is visible, Haunter lurks, silently stalking its next victim. By licking, it saps the victim’s life. It causes shaking that won’t stop until the victim’s demise.”

The Pokémon anime has given us a grievously inaccurate image of Haunter. Ash’s Haunter is a fun loving little prankster that manages to even get the dour Sabrina to smile. Awesome, right?

Except Sabrina probably died. Haunter lurk in the pitch black darkness where no one can see. It stalks its prey in the darkness, giving them that feeling of being watched, until the playful little scamp pounces and licks them. To death. Haunter’s tongue causes uncontrollable shaking that lasts until the victim dies. Alone, in the darkness. And running? Even if you could see, Haunter can also pass through objects. Bring a lantern if you hope to survive; just make sure it’s not a Lampent.

Banette – “Marionette Pokémon”

“A doll that became a Pokémon over its grudge from being junked. It seeks the child that disowned it. If it opens its mouth, its cursed energy escapes.”

Banette is probably the most overtly scary of this set, with its creepy smile that you only realize is a zipped up mouth after you’ve looked at it a couple times. But nothing is ever really that terrifying until there are children involved, right?

All Banette are former plush dolls that were abandoned by their owners. A strong grudge turned the doll into a Pokémon that now wants to hunt down the child who threw it out. Presumably to kill them and smile that creepy smile while Lampent shows up to steal their spirit. And you thought Lotso from Toy Story was bitter.

Now, think of every toy you’ve ever thrown out…they’re coming for you.

Froslass – “Snow Land Pokémon”

“Legends in snowy regions say that a woman who was lost on an icy mountain was reborn as Froslass. It freezes prey by blowing its -58 degree F breath. It is said to then secretly display its prey.”

Okay, let’s break this ice queen down. There was this woman who, once upon a time, went off towards an icy mountain and was never seen again. Instead this new Pokémon came back. Due to it being a woman of the ice, it was dubbed Froslass. When Froslass came back, she started freezing and (I assume) taking the lives of others in order to feed. Then when she finishes her meal she displays her victims’ corpses like some sort of serial killer. What’s that? Not creepy enough for you? Okay, let’s continue down the Buneary hole, then…

Gothitelle – “Astral Body Pokémon”

“They can predict the future from the placement and movement of the stars. They can see Trainers’ life spans. When it learns its Trainer’s life span, it cries in sadness.”

First and foremost, I would like to point out this is some Death Note level stuff. This Pokémon can see the exact day you’re going to die! Granted, it does show signs of remorse upon learning it. However, that doesn’t excuse the fact that this is a Pokémon that can see the day you’re going to die. You better hope you have a great relationship with your Gothitelle. Maybe it will have mercy on your soul and choose not to tell you.

Yamask – “Spirit Pokémon”

“Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry. These Pokémon arose from the spirits of people interred in graves. Each retains memories of its former life.”

I’m not going to sit here and pretend you’ve never read this before. But I think it requires some reiteration. After Froslass freezes you, sending you to the great beyond on the day Gothitelle foresaw, you will return to this world as a Pokémon. And you will carry around a mask of your former face with you forever. Not only that, you will not be able to help yourself from looking at your former face and breaking down on a daily basis. Why the breakdown? Aside from the fact that you’re a shadow of your former self, I’m betting you’re also being yelled at by a 10 year old to fight the thing in front of you. I’m so sorry.

Duskull – “Requiem Pokémon”

“Duskull can pass through any wall no matter how thick it may be. Once this Pokémon chooses a target, it will doggedly pursue the intended victim until the break of dawn. It loves the crying of children. It startles bad kids by passing through walls and making them cry. If it finds bad children who won’t listen to their parents, it will spirit them away--or so it’s said.”

Duskull lives to scare children, that’s what it does. Not only that, but once it finds a child it wants to scare it will hunt that child for hours. Not until that child has given up all hope and surrendered itself to the fright that Duskull dishes out will they be left alone. That is, unless the child can run until morning. I only say run because it’s impossible to hide from Duskulls because they can pass through pretty much anything. But hey, at least you’re still alive. For now.

Drifloon – “Balloon Pokémon”

“A Pokémon formed by the spirits of people and Pokémon. It loves damp, humid seasons. It is whispered that any child who mistakes Drifloon for a balloon and holds on to it could wind up missing.”

Oh goody, another Pokémon who lives off the misery of children. It not only is a visible ghost of someone you may have known, but they are now a kidnapper. Think about it this way: your best friend died, turned into a balloon and now steals children for fun. Yeah, that is messed up. Happy Halloween.

TalkBack / Star Wars Pinball 3D Review
« on: October 22, 2013, 07:18:02 PM »

That's no moon! It's a pinball!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/35785

Star Wars Pinball is exactly what it claims to be; it’s Star Wars and pinball. Granted, the game does attempt to make pinball a little more fun than usual. The game offers missions, an overarching Force system and multiple levels to play. For any Star Wars fan, the game does a great job of capturing the feel of the Star Wars franchise. The only problem is that you have to be ridiculously good at pinball to see it all.

The three tables to play pinball on are The Empire Strikes Back, The Clone Wars, and Boba Fett. Each offers its own special features, events and awards. For instance, you can win a medal in the Boba Fett table by activating and then escaping the Sarlacc pit, in the Clone Wars you must defeat two Sith lords and in Empire you must defeat an AT-AT walker. There are a handful of other events to play through as well. It’s always fun to activate each level’s features, but it’s often hard to figure out how to do so. Additionally, there’s a system in place that allows you to choose either the light or dark side the first time the game is booted up. With each game played, the force fluctuates according to the chosen side.

The voice-overs, sound effects, music, and voice acting really capture the feeling of Star Wars in the best possible way. Even the Clone Wars announcer is the right amount of campy, reminiscent of the early episodes. The lightsaber and blaster sounds are a nice touch, although accompanied with the constantly flashing lights they come off as a little overwhelming at times. Other wise the animation is smooth and the physics are done well.

Star Wars Pinball attempts to create a community with the ability to post scores online and compete against friends with local high score and multiplayer mode. While this may increase replayability a bit, there is not a lot of lasting value in Star Wars pinball. Unless you really love pinball, this game is a flash in the pan.

The game really feels like you’re playing pinball. But that’s just it: it’s pinball. It can be overwhelming to try to keep up with the scenes happening on the score screen while watching the ball bounce around on the top screen. Additionally, aside from the scenes that take place on the table, it’s not all that exciting.  The game feels like more Star Wars than pinball, and at its core it’s just a dressed up pinball game with some nice extras. If you’re a pinball lover and a fan of the Star Wars franchise, you’ll be in heaven with this game. If you’re not, then it might not be for you.

TalkBack / My Problem with Pokémon X and Y
« on: October 16, 2013, 05:21:18 PM »

I actually like the game a lot. Calm down, guys.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/35723

Alright, so I have this slight problem with Pokémon X and Y (as the title clearly suggests). When I first started the game I thought I would have to fine-tune my team each time a new Pokémon I loved appeared. This assumption came with another assumption that this would happen in between every gym leader, but I was not expecting so many different choices to smack me in the face the minute I booted up the game.

The amount of Pokémon readily available makes it hard to choose who I put on my team and continue my journey through Kalos with. Do I structure my team based on the next gym, do I use my favorites, or do I keep two Pokémon on board solely to evolve and expand my Pokédex? What’s a young (okay, I’m twenty four) future Pokémaster to do?

Put simply, I don’t know, and it’s frustrating as hell. I want to have my starters with me as I always have and yet I see Abra, Ralts, Zubat and Cubone just begging to be put on my team. Their cries wake me up at night. I try to keep three consistent Pokémon around and mix up the other three and I’m miserable. This is what we (I) have always wanted: Pokémon across generations dancing together through the fields just waiting to help me kick butts of both children and the elderly alike (woah, wait, I do that?!) on my journey. How do I break this melancholy and break into a world of sheer delight?

Help me, Internet. NWR readers, please, I’m begging you. In this region where the amount of Pokémon in each area is equal to or greater than the weight of a Snorlax in pounds, how do I choose whom to put on my team? Help! Where are the Elite Beat Agents when you need them? Cue the music!

I played it solo, but I know you can play solely on the gamepad if you want to.

TalkBack / LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Impressions
« on: October 10, 2013, 11:39:15 AM »

When LEGO meets Marvel it's an incredible and amazing experience.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/35668

The people at Warner Bros. Interactive, specifically game designer Arthur Parsons, allowed me the pleasure of seeing the new Lego Marvel game in action on the Wii U.

Parsons said, “Lego Marvel is our opportunity to bring the Marvel Universe into a Lego game…We wanted to write an original story so we could bring in as many characters as possible.” The game is packed with more Marvel Characters than I previously thought possible. All of the heroes and villains are used throughout the story and can be used interchangeably in free play.

In the story, Doctor Doom blows up the Silver Surfer’s surfboard into gray bricks, called Cosmic Bricks, and it’s a race against time as heroes and villains battle for these Cosmic Bricks. Doctor Doom calls on Loki, Magneto and the Abomination (among others) while Nick Fury calls on the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and many others to help him. The story lends itself to many incredible team-ups, like Wolverine and Hulk or the Human Torch, Thor and Captain America.

Unlike previous Lego games, Lego Marvel Super Heroes allows players to explore Free Play mode from the beginning. In Free Play mode there are various missions and quests that range from fighting to exploring to finding a man’s lost monkey. The entire island of Manhattan is available to explore in all of its brick-like glory. You can even fly up to the S.H.E.I.L.D. Helicarrier and jump off, landing anywhere on the island.

The game handles beautifully, and it looks great on both the TV and the Gamepad In addition to the character switching in Free Play mode, it’s also easy to switch between members of your team in Story Mode depending on how you want to make your way through the levels.

Another one of the wonderful things about Lego games is their ageless sense of humor. Whether it’s a character’s limbs popping off or some joke about bricks, the humor sticks. This game is no exception, as some characters, like Wolverine, will become hurt or lose some of their skin to reveal a LEGO skeleton.

When I asked about the cast of voices used in the game Parson told me that the cast was brilliant and that they went above and beyond with the voices. With Clark Gregg as Coulson, Troy Baker as Loki, Steve Blum as Wolverine, Nolan North as Deadpool and John DiMaggio as Galactus, the game is a real delight for both fans and newcomers. Fans of Marvel TV shows will recognize more than a few voices, as will anyone who has played previous Marvel games.

All in all, the game looks promising, and it feels like a great game for both kids and parents. It’s a treat for Lego fans and an even bigger treat for Marvel fans.

Marvel Lego Super Heroes will be available for Wii U on October 18, 2013.

TalkBack / Wakedas Review
« on: September 24, 2013, 05:39:29 PM »

Relax, pull up a chair and play some Wakedas.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/35514

Wakedas, pronounced wa-ke-da-su, is an easy pick-up-and-play game from Circle Entertainment, the guys who have brought us such games as The 18th Gate and Witch and Hero. In Wakedas, the objective is to group all the colored blocks together. Sounds simple, right? Just because the concept is simple doesn’t mean this game will be a complete cakewalk.  Although the game comes with no instructions, it’s fairly easy to figure everything out in the first minute or two. And once that’s out of the way, it’s quite an enjoyable title.

The process starts with a grid of multicolored squares. You clear the grid by moving the squares either horizontally or vertically, along with its entire row or column, with your stylus until all of the similarly colored blocks are touching. Think of it like a Rubik’s cube, but with only one side.  This simple concept is executed wonderfully. It’s a relaxing time and a good way to flex those brain muscles.

The first handful of puzzles are a breeze and shouldn’t pose too much of a challenge, but things get a bit trickier when more colors and pieces are added. As the game progresses, locked boxes, multicolored pieces, and more elaborate puzzles are introduced. The great thing about the game is that it doesn’t require a tutorial. Each new challenge is presented by itself, and the game does a great job of pacing between new concepts. There are three tiers of puzzles, each tier having a bigger grid than the last. This makes the game increasingly more challenging and fun. Of course, the later challenges can only be unlocked by completing the first ones.

The game is a nice way to relax. Wakedas has an excellent mix of challenge and fun. The delightful colors, soothing music, and calming visuals come together to create an enchanting experience on their own. The challenging puzzles are just frosting on the already appetizing cake.  For anyone who enjoys a good puzzle game, this game is hard to beat.

TalkBack / No More 8-Bit Cries in Pokémon X & Y
« on: September 19, 2013, 08:30:15 AM »

Time to grow up.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35462

Pokémon will no longer have the cries they had in the past generations. All Pokémon, including Pokémon from the first couple generations, will have cries similar to the Pokémon in X and Y. Older Pokémon will have updated cries, especially Pikachu.

In X and Y Pikachu's updated cry will be from the anime. It is the only known Pokémon whose cry is like this.

This information comes directly from a Nintendo representative who was giving us a hands on demo of Pokémon X and Y last Tuesday.

Sweet blades, bro.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35461

Players will be able to ride bikes, ride pokémon and skate around on rollerblades in Pokémon X and Y. After receiving rollerblades in one of the first towns, players will able to equip them and skate around the world.

Additionally, when players battle other rollerskaters and defeat them the skaters will teach them new tricks they can perform while rollerskating.

This information comes directly from a Nintendo representative who was giving us a hands on demo of Pokémon X and Y last Tuesday.

TalkBack / The Smurfs 2 Review
« on: August 16, 2013, 08:32:27 AM »

I smurf to smurf if I smurf smurf one more smurf I'll smurf a smurf.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/35208

With a new Smurf movie upon us, Ubisoft has determined to release a new Smurf game upon the world. The game has two parts: a picture book mode and a mini-game mode. You can either go through the picture book and play games along the way or just play mini-games in any order you want. It doesn’t really matter what you choose to do. Either way it’ll take you about an hour to play everything in the game.

The picture book takes you through the story of the movie. I will say this: the narrator is the only reason I made it through the book. The game is obviously meant for children, but the story was hard to get through, and I doubt even children would want to read the story more than once.

Through the picture book, players can access mini-games by tapping on highlighted Smurfs. Sadly, the mini-games are nothing more than glorified flash games. The catapult game, two memory based games, racing game, matching game and collection game all have two things in common—they last a little over thirty seconds and they’re not very fun. Playing through each of these games twice takes a little over 20 minutes. The game offers a Smurf figurine every time you finish a game, hoping you will come back for more. Spoiler alert: You won’t. The figurines don’t offer you anything. Things might be different if I could learn about each of the Smurfs, but the figurines just stand there and look OK.

I can’t see a reason why anyone above the age of 6 would buy this game. The game gets boring quickly and offers very little reason to play past the first couple of minutes. But hey, if you’re a Smurf fanatic you may enjoy little blue people dancing across the screen for 30 seconds at a time.
