Excellent review Bloodworth, very clever with the usage of the quotes. Almost made it look like it was an official Nintendo review, eheheh.

Sales of the game for the first week peg JSS around 220000....I thought pre-orders alone were over 300k?

Awesome system sales tho.

I dont think you'll be disappointed there....from what I read, the game's sheer number of unlockables will keep you quite busy. It truly is for multiplayer tho...

So no concrete details on Europe's strategy for the Play-Yan eh....I'm not even going to get into America. I have no idea what the hell they are doing on this matter. If they are serious about the Play-Yan they might as well give word about it now and let word of mouth build awareness of its existence and what it does. Makes me think the US is still deliberating on bringing it over.

Europe at least has confirmed their intentions for it...and the "Play-Yan 2" tag that KDR has pointed out certainly indicates some changes being made (likely to the device's OS)

The Play-Yan uses SD cards, theStonedRat. SD cards are relatively cheap...a 1 GB card can be had for around $50 with a decent deal...even 2 GB cards have been seen for less than $100.
You could also go the route of the GB Movie Player, an unofficial HK device that has some popularity and notoriety. It accepts CF cards, of similar price and capacity to SD.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Was Hunters Delayed?

Oh, Metroid thread, riiight:

It should be online....its been three months since E3, their engine is pretty much ready to go. They are either working on a)fleshing out the single player as far as they can, b)utilizing Nintendo WiFi Connection infrastructure or c)inventing myriad Metroid-themed minigames. The game will not be going gold until next month at the earliest as well....so four months since the healthy demo they showed at E3 (and ComicCon, where I played it.)

If expanding a game's multiplayer aspect to go online is as relatively simple as was commented...at least 4 months...I really hope so.

Perhaps the man wants new colors...

Wonder when Nintendo will deliver on that promise (the blue is nice, but their are other nice ones that are ready to make it over here).
Europe is getting blue and pink...that pink color (or at least the white) would be a nice little partner for the likely onslaught that will be Nintendogs.

I agree with couchmonkey that they really need to make some big improvements for the sequel. FTM is a good game in its own right, but WW: Touched blows it away. I already own two "mini-game games" for the DS, and I'm not sure if I'm willing to buy yet another.

But it didn't bomb...which is why they are making this sequel. It sure as heck didn't go gangbusters at retail or anything but apparently it was a modest success.

The first game was noticeably rushed, and as cool as it was, I thought it definitely felt short. Having beaten just normal mode, I also have to say that I havent gone back to the game since. I really think however, that this sequel is going to see an ass-ton of extra content integrated and I wouldn't put it past Sega to include some sort of weird online functionality. Say, trading bras or bunny ears or some such. The first game was hell-bent on utilizing every DS feature possible, and now a new one in Nintendo WiFi is available...

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Mario Kart DS: ONLINE

Played this game at SDComic-Con.

Very smooth, although I have never played the SNES original and am less intuitive with the dpad. Nevertheless, I was pulling off slides off tiny jumps and initiating red sparks.
Saw the options for "Nitro Cup" and "Retro Cup", BTW...didnt count the available number and I doubt all the tracks were in there anyway.

So far, I thought the game didnt seem anything special or out of the ordinary...just another Mario Kart game...
Yep, just another Mario Kart, which means I will be buying it immediately come release =p

Hmm...odd. And kinda sad. Apparently the GBA games were not even released there until the compilation pak Famicom Wars 1+2 last November.

How very odd...it used to be fairly popular back in the days of the SuperFami.
Now I put a frowny face

The rights issue can be worked around...after all, either everyone here is recieving license off of Jump themselves or they are specifically in a deal for the animation and not the manga. I think Jump would have some leverage there...I was also told a very important point, that the context of the original licensing agreement could make it a non-issue anyway.
Either way, I don't think a company such as Atari with DBZ would seek to block this game...it is sufficiently different from their own offerings and does not provide the background story from the actual license.

I think the big issue really comes down to the fact that the vast majority of those 150+ characters are not familiar with most Americans. Some of them certainly have their followings tho...and I wonder that even if Nintendo ultimate decides to not bring it themselves, could another company, say an Atlus or Majesco, obtain an agreement with Nintendo to localize.

I think this game will be money in the US as well...to kids getting it just for Dragonballz and Shaman King to anime fans and word of mouth among hardcore players if it ends up being a fun game...

Interesting observation...perhaps it is because they get so many more new titles (many of which are culture specific and never make it here.)
Or perhaps all the folks who want the game just basically get it in that first month.

Some games do have legs tho...and of course we have recent examples in the Brain Training Game, but titles like Pokemon as well I'm sure.

Yea, I'm not quite understanding where folks are getting the "Famicom Wars is not popular in Japan" idea...if anything, the fact that the game series has survived and continued to spawn since the days of the famicom would seem to indicate it does well enough for itself over there...

It certainly has garnered an excited following in America tho.

Geomon got something like 27/40.

Naw man, thats just how Goemon does in Famitsu. They ain't too hot on Goemon generally.
If anything, thats ENCOURAGING, coming from Famitsu...apparently the game is a bit short as well, unfortuneately.

I don't know if this is all peaches n cream...glad the sales are good, yet I'm like BlacknMild I'm a bit bitter that the non-games have seen such scintillating success yet the cool "regular" games have not.

Famicom Wars...Trauma Center...Goemon...where art thou? According to Famitsu you were all excellent to good games. And the system is selling like hotcakes. Where are the sales?

Apparently, having this game ready to go by September is a key part of Nintendo's late summer to early fall push. I'm guessing this results from A) wanting another game to assume the face of the DS library instead of having it fall strictly on Nintendogs, and B) not wanting the game to take attention away from the games that will debut with Nintendo Wifi service, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing.

Is this gonna be a mistake? Who is to say...we will know once we see Hunter's sales in the first couple months. I do know Reggie and co. must have discussed the matter pretty thoroughly and decided they needed this game ASAP as a killer app for an older crowd with a thirst for more visceral, realistic-looking fare.

The real time action mode is extra.

Rest assured, the Advance Wars gameplay is intact, just now over two screens.
The game, despite high famitsu scores, just didnt have a knockout first week. Hopefully it will have good legs and will ultimately sell well over there...otherwise it seems quite a travesty that the good games are being ignored in favor of "non-games".

Perfect Dark might actually have a steady framerate on the DS, that plus touchpad "mouselook" == potential megaseller. They might decide to make a new FPS instead but the DS is clearly the best platform for console FPSs.

You forgot the key ingredient that would really make it explode: Wifi Network support. Whoever can get out a good solid FPS that can be played over Nintendo's forthcoming network will be richly rewarded.
Such a game is a good number of months off however, now that we know Hunters will not have the support.

It certainly could be Rare tho....still, seeing how the ad depicts Banjo, perhaps that is their hint. Rare does so love to be clever sometimes...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Battle Stylus

Ahh, the battle stylus...

I've read several reviews on this and all have been unanimous in saying: its an awesome upgrade from the stock stylus.
Whether or not its worth $15 (for some pretty pricey for a little stick, metal or no) depends on you. For example, are you really hating the current stylus for its lack of heft? Because the battle stylus will definitely help in that department...supposedly its tip helps with accuracy a bit as well.

Personally, I'm very tempted to try one out and may do so in the near future now that I have DS games that are really compelling.

10 MB?

Hard to beleive...the smallest DS cards are 32 MB...and it doesnt make sense for a publisher to pay the money for those cards and not use more than 10.

I would hope the music alone would provide for this...

DS cards are currently offered to publishers in capacities as large as 128 MB. In the future, as it becomes more cost-effective, larger cards are possible. I don't see why in a year or two 256 MB cards wouldn't be feasible...course, a game like that would basically be packing larger music and movies files...i.e. a Square-Enix game.

How credible is the source magazine, NGC?

Because this announcement, while nice for the DS, just doesnt seem to make sense as a game. Survival horror on a handheld? Fully 3D on the DS, as opposed to the PSP? Touch screen puzzles...of course.

I'll beleive this once a source we can all readily trust confirms by going directly to Capcom...

Conversely, I've read very positive reviews for this game...very fun and unique platformer. It was released in Europe a while ago I believe...

GBA still has some legs...in the way of platformers we still have Gunstar SuperHeroes, Screw Breaker and this on the way...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Meteos!
« on: July 01, 2005, 10:27:15 PM »
For those with a Fry's Electronics in their area there is a good chance they are selling Meteos for $22.99 this Fourth of July weekend.
In fact, you could even then bring it to a Circuit City (if one is in your area) and price match for another 10% off.

Of course, failing all that, just pay full price for one of the DS' most outstanding games ^___^

I bought my DS at launch in the States, had it pre-ordered and everything at EB. I currently own Feel the Magic (amusing and often clever, but definitely not lasting) and Mario 64 (fun minigames)...and thats it.

Yet, I do not regret the purchase even for a second.

I love GBA games, you see, and the DS has been fantastic for my GBA experience.
Of course, I'm utterly entranced with the coming DS lineup, and many of those titles are vying to attack my wallet. It will start this week actually, because I will be purchasing Meteos....

In short, the GBA library coupled with the promise of the DS lineup has me more hooked on handhelds than I have ever been....they take more of my gaming focus than consoles these days.

I can deal with the creation of games I don't like.  But a shift into an entirely different product is worth getting upset about.  There's never been a situation before where Nintendo has dedicated focus to people who don't play or want to play games.

I dont feel that worry.
What I'm getting from you is a feeling that Nintendo sees "non-games" perform very well and thus re-dedicates additional resources to their development.
The thing is, I can certainly see added resources being poured into such a direction, but I DON'T see those resources taking away from their existing regular game development. Rather, it is supplemental. Nintendo has the funds to spend on new programmers and liceneses for such endeavours, and I figure they would elect to make the constituent parts of a "non-game" development team seperate from the talent exisiting in their Mario, Zelda, Wario Ware etc etc teams...

Altho actually, wouldn't be susprised if the brains behind Wario Ware would be interested in coming up with new game concepts to appeal to the new market.
