Upcoming Wii Games to Look Forward To

FlingSmash / The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

by Matthew Blundon - June 24, 2010, 2:25 pm EDT

With so many great Wii games coming in the next year, it will be hard to find time to play them all!

FlingSmash

Publisher: Nintendo

Developer: Artoon

Genre: Action Sidescroller

Release Date: Holiday 2010

When Suthon Island is attacked by evil monsters, it’s up to the ball-shaped Zip to set things right. By suing the Wii Remote and Wii MotionPlus, players will be flinging Zip all over the screen, aiming to reach high scores and defeat as many enemies as you can. By hitting Zip, you will watch him as he dashes across the screen, breaking thrown barriers and anything else that is in his way.

FlingSmash features eight side-scrolling words, each ending with their very own unique boss battle. Zip has plenty of his own abilities to make his way through these worlds, ranging from turning into a steel ball to being shrunk down into a compressed form.

FlingSmash obviously has a very vibrant look to it that obviously helps make the experience more enjoyable. The bright colored environments create an environment that particularly appeals to children, while also not looking too childish to discourage core gamers.

A second player can join in all the action, too. One player will control Zip as he smashes his way through levels, while another will take control of his friend Pip, who will also be breaking through everything in her path.

FlingSmash has been in development for quite some time and was originally supposed to launch this summer. The title has now been delayed to this holiday, so hopefully we will finally able to see what Artoon has been up to before the year closes. We previewed the game earlier this month, and you can check out our preview here. -Matthew Blundon

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Publisher: Nintendo

Developer: Nintendo

Genre: Action Adventure

Release Date: 2011

Let’s be honest: the last console Zelda game had problems. Though it was designed for the GameCube, it was retrofitted for the newest console’s motion control gimmick, requiring players to waggle their Wii Remote to swing Link’s sword and point at the screen to aim their bow. These actions worked fine, of course, but they weren’t exactly involving. We waited…and waited…for a real Wii Zelda game, one that would capitalize on the system’s motion control capabilities. That day is finally here. Or, to be more accurate, that day will arrive in 2011.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is basically Zelda meets Wii Sports Resort. Sword combat is right out of that party game’s Swordplay game. Using the Fairy Bow mimics the Archery game, using bombs reminds me of a combination of Baseball and Bowling. Link has some new tricks up his green sleeves, too: taking control of flying insects for reconnaissance and bomb-dropping, and whacking enemies with a whip. The game’s look, while still unfinished, seems to be the character models of Twilight Princess but with the colors and effects of Wind Waker. The game is bright, expressive, and gorgeous. The Wii Motion Plus will give players a lot of breathing room with Link’s sword, and Nintendo is capitalizing on that: most enemies will require you to swing the sword a certain direction, and you must stay on your toes if they change their stance!

Additionally, Link’s beam sword—forgotten since A Link to the Past—makes a triumphant return here. By holding their Wii Remote aloft, players will charge up Link’s sword before unleashing a beam of light (SOLARBEAM!). To use Link’s trademark spin attack, the player must move the Remote and Nunchuk together left or right. The Nunchuk, in addition to making Link walk around (and sprint), also allows him to use his shield. You can raise and lower the shield with the Nunchuk, and also knock back enemies and projectiles.

As with any Zelda game, we can’t wait to hear more information. It’s set to launch in 2011, so keep your ear to the ground and your eye to Nintendo World Report for the latest news on this long-awaited title.
