Extra Life #2: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Post-Game

The second Extra Life looks at Climax Studios' acclaimed Silent Hill Wii game.

I'm definitely liking this game, which is a little humorous because I didn't do too much in my hour of play. From a gameplay perspective, all I did was wander around a town, solve entry-level puzzles, and run from humping enemies.

But the atmosphere. Oh man, the atmosphere. The particle effects in this game are outstanding, way better than Cursed Mountain, another Wii game known for its particle effects. I've heard before that when you're not in nightmare scenes, there is no danger, but I still found myself uneasy because of the killer atmosphere. Everything is well lit by your flashlight when it has to be, but the surronding dark areas are never too confusing to maneuver through. This was something I had a huge issue with in Cursed Mountain, where I would get lost all the time because of the darkness.

In my opinion, the particle effects in Cursed Mountain don't match up to Silent Hill's.

The phone is a great addition as well. It's an extremely organic in-game menu where you can save your game, look at a helpful map, take pictures, and more. It's nice because it doesn't stop gameplay. Harry brings it up and holds it in one hand on the side of the screen.

The psychological profile scenes are brief, but they also set the mood very well. It made the early section that I played feel episodic, and I imagine the game might continue that way.

The Fourth Kind
Silent Hill's psychiatrist scenes are way better than the ones in The Fourth Kind.

Nothing in this game turned me away, and I can't wait to work my way through it. I completely understand why this received so much praise. It looks like it deserved it.

Did you enjoy the feature? Any advice? Criticism? Do you think Shattered Memories was a dumb choice for this? If you played it, are you glad to see that I'm bringing it back up months after it came out? Let us know in Talkback
