Show us your launch! Volume #1

Volume 2 - Page 4

Well, getting a GameCube was pretty easy for me. I had reserved my copy at

FuncoLand sometime in the summer, so I was all set when it came down to

picking one up. HOWEVER, what about getting an extra controller and Rouge

Squadron II. Well, let me tell you... it was nothing but hell! Funcoland was

about 20 minutes away from my house, so it took me about an hour to pick one

up and hed home. The thing is though, I did not want to get the controller

and the games from there, since I work at Walmart (parttime highschool job),

and that means i can get my 10% off (yes, im a cheapo). So, I drove back to

walmart, where my friend who was working, had put aside a memory card, extra

conrtoller, wave race, and rouge squadron. However, let just say that that

was what he was SUPPOSED to do. He actually had decided that there were

enough to begin with, and that they would not get sold out. So, when i got

there, I found a copy of Wave Race and a extra memory card. When i asked

where the controllers where, he said they where sold out. I was in an

outrage, however, I decided to try one of the generic ones, and return it if

it wasnt that great. Then, I asked him where Rouge Squadron was, the game I

had been most anticipating. His reply was: "We dont know where our copies of

Rouge Squadron are, they are somewhere in back, and it will take a couple

hours to find it". I was obviously vey ticked once again, so I got in the

car, and drove to a mall that was about 20 min away. When I got there I ran

to EB, where there was a gigantic line (yes, a gigantic line, and its only

11:00pm at this time). They did in fact have rouge squadron, however, at the

rate the line was going, I wasnt going to be getting any time soon. Thats

when I ran down to Kay Bee toys, where I was able to find my copy of the

game, and guess what? NO LINE!!!

Thinking that I was going to be to play my games when I got home, I happy

drove. That is when I got home, and my mom told me we had to leave for a

party in 2 hours, and that I had to study for my physics exam the next day.

I was plan *pissed*, i ran up stairs and began to study, though it was very

difficult considering pictures of GameCube kept popping into my head. I was

then able to convince my mom I had studied enough, and that I had enough

time to get ready for the party, and at the same time play some GC. I ran to

the bags, ripped them open, and pluged the system in. I joyously played the

first mission of SW:RS when my mom told me we were leaving. Annoyed I shut

the game and went with her. We then got home late, and she told me to go to

bed, since I had the test the next morning, which ment no GC playing time.

I am in school at the moment, and have just finished taking my physics test,

which I have probably failed. I dont care. I just wanna get home for some

GC!!!!

MORAL OF THE STORY: Nintendo owns all!!!!!

Hey Guys! First of all, I just wanted to say that PlanetGameCube rox! You

guys are honest and don't bullshyt! I have stuck with ya ever since E3! Ya

are really great and I thank you!

My name is Christopher Maldonado and I live in NYC, The Bronx! Im 16 years

old and I have been a hardcore Nintendo fan eversince I could talk! I have

always remained faithful to Nintendo, I have laughed and cried with it. I

was definetly getting a GameCube!

I started to call Toys R' Us (Which is 2 blocks away from my home.) They

said they weren't reserving it becuase they dont know the actual amount of

GC's they were going to get but that I could order online. My mom and myself

aren't to comfortable with online buying so I decided to wait till launch

day.

2 months later, I found out that my religion had a very important meeting

set for the 18th of November! My heart dropped! The meeting started at

8:00am and ended around 3:30PM IN NEW JERSEY! I had absolutely NO chance to

get a GameCube! There was only one way! To tell my father (who works nights)

to get it when he comes out of work at 8:00am. He works downtown Manhattan

and gets out at 8:00AM. He wold have to drive all the way to Toys R' Us and

wait on a line and hope he gets it. To make it worst, my father isn't all

that fast in videogames so I was afraid he might get me a Dreamcast or

something by mistake! I was screwed!

Now it was 6 days till GameCube Launch. I checked up on PGC and heard that

you guys have reason to believe that stored were selling GameCube eraly.

That same day I went to Manhattan and I ask all around. NO ONE was selling

it early. All the little cheap stores weren't sure if they were getting it

PERIOD! I wanted to die.

3 days Before GameCube launch. I started to pick up some sourness in my

throat. I eventually got sick later in the day.

1 more day left. It was Saturday. I some how gave my sickness to my mother

and she decided not to go to that Religious meeting! I was saved!

I set my alarm for 7:00AM becuase I live 2 blocks away from Toys R' Us. The

only problem was, will there be a long line and will there be enough

GameCubes!?

I couldn't sleep saturday night. I finally fell asleep. My Mom woke me up at

6:00AM and told me to go. I complied. I got dressed and left with 2 EGM's in

my pocket and a CD player. I had to wait 4 hours till Toys R' Us opened at

10.

I got there. There were already 13 people waiting. They were all talking

about GameCube. Eventually I joined in and we talked about Nintendo and the

good ol' memories. About a block away there was a K-Mart. There Line was

getting bigger than hours.... WAY BIGGER. It opens at 8 though. At 7:44am

MORE THAN HALF OF THAT DAMN LINE ran to ours becuase K-Mart just informed

that they only got 20 GAMECUBES and they handed out tickets to the first 20

people. I was shaking bacause I didn't know how many GameCubes this Toys R'

Us would get! And if I would get one cause everyone was going to stampede!

So I am pissin' in my pants (not really) and was wondering. Suddenly a staff

member (a young kid who has no LIFE) came out and mocked us. He wasy

chanting "Oh WE HAVE no GAMECUBES. We only got 15!". Then one of the people

on the line saud that he called and Toys R' Us said they had 150. So we all

agreed that Toys R' Us would at least get 50. I was still nervous.

8:27AM. A staff lady came out and yelled, "Don't Worry! We have enough

GameCubes for everyone! We have 500 GAMECUBES!"

THE WHOLE LINE JUST GASPED! I could not believe it! She also said that they

will open at 9:00AM ONLY FOR THE GAMECUBE PEOPLE! AND THAT THEY WOULD LET

ONLY 20 PEOPLE IN AT A TIME. You have no Idea how happy I was. I eventually

got my BLACK Cube with a memory card and Luigi's Mansion. I bought my

GameCube at exactly 9:37 & 42secs AM.! It was hell but I gotta Cube!

VIVA NINTENDO. Thanks for reading my adventure guys, I hope you post it.

Always a Fan,

Christopher "§age" Maldonado

I've never had to line up for a system but the cube was the exception because I missed the Funco pre-order and I didn't want to pay for a bundle. I didn't like that I was being told what I had to buy.

My friends and I were all set to play GBA all through the night but we went over to the Target, conveniently located across the street from my apartment, at 6pm, 8pm, 11pm, and 12:30am but, there was never a line.

I had been speaking with the manager there and he even showed me the entire stock that they had of the console, 60 systems and some memcards and games. Since I knew that there were at least 60 systems, we decided to call it a night.

I actually was a bit disappointed at the seeming lack of interest that people had in the system. No one was lining up. Damnit.

I drove to the TRU and Best Buy a mile a way and there was a line of about 20 people at TRU since 11pm but no one at BB. This TRU got 224 units! Nice. I like the no pre-order campaign.

So, I woke up at 7:10 and walked across the street and thankfully I saw a line. I was number 31 so I was going to get one for sure. The earliest guy was there from 5am. As it grew closer to 8am many, many more people came to line up. As I noticed the line go past 60, I suggested people check out TRU just in case.

I had already bought my games and memcard earlier in the week so at 8am, we all went in and picked up a jet-black GCN.

They sold out at 820am.

I walked back home, unpacked it in all the glory, and I still can't believe how small it is (even after seeing the import one and at E3 + cube clubs). It's smaller than my Sony Mini system (and the bottom inch of the GCN is mostly just empty shell from those exp.port covers)! I can't imagine how small the modem adapters are gonna be.

This is soo much fun! Bring on Pikmin and Dinosaur Planet! And when I need to, I'm very happy that the GCN is easy to modify for imports (...unlike that bastard PS2).

I'm hoping for the GCN to have a great generation like the SNES which is still my all-time favorite system.

Sincerely,

Dave Friedberg
