Unless someone can provide a link stating that one player can drive while another can shoot, I wouldn't believe it.  I wouldn't even speculate it, as it would be a really weird setup.  As it stands now, 1 player controls 2 characters in 1 kart.

That would be pretty dumb on Nintendo's part.  Not giving us co-op when this feature beckons for co-op is just plain idiotic.

I have had more fun with Mario kart 64 then any of the others. Countless nights with friends over smack talking each other.

The other day I broke out the SNES version and after 5 minutes had replaced it with the 64 version.

I am looking forward to  the cube version  and if it is different  as can be and I decide  I do not prefer it then I will play the version I prefer, simple as that.

So far it look to be fun, reminds me of that old wacky racers cartoon for some reason.

Just thought I would mention to the guy who said that Mario Kart 64 was a dissapointment...

I rather liked Mario Kart 64, and the Japanese seemed to agree with me.  Mario Kart 64 outsold Zelda: Ocarina of Time in Japan.

I have played and owned all of the MK games, and of them all so far, I have found MK64 to be the best.  At one point I thought the SNES game couldn't be topped, but I have just had way to much fun with MK 64, the levels and weapons and of course, the battle.  It just held too much enjoyment to be called a dissapointment, even with so few battle courses.  I hope that Nintendo keeps the magic that was inherant in those classic games in the newest iteration of Mario Kart.

A game which is clearly based on the N64 version. Big wide tracks, including those city based ones, and they've even gone as far as to remove the go-karts. What made the original title so much fun was that you raced on pretty tight and twisty go-kart tracks. In 150cc mode it was a challenge to get around the track at full speed and required much hopping and sliding to stay on the track. Battle modes too were an art, with well timed red shell "boomeraning back down the adjacent passage into your opponents path. It was a beautiful balanced game. This was lost in the N64 version, where many tracks lost the sense of speed, tracks were too wide so it took less skill to navigate them, and the battle mode maps were pretty poor in comparison to the playability of the SNES version. Along comes GBA version and is universally acclaimed. It redeems the license. Mario Kart is once again great. All Nintendo needed to do was take the exact same levels and gameplay mechanics, and stretch them up vertically on the z-axis to make them 3d, whilst keeping the dimensions the same. The slap on some nice pretty textures, and bingo.. perfect Mario Kart in a real 3d world instead of pseudo 3D mode 7. Do they? No. They give us a sequel to MK64, and its back to dire arcade racing targetted at kids. All I wanted was full screen 4 player MK from the GBA brought upto date on the GC. That would sell in droves, whereas this, I fear, will not. MK64 was a disappointment, and I'd bet this will be too. Depressing.

first of all how is it generally accepted that the snes and gba mario karts are better when they sold millions of copies less than the N64 version?
second- the big wide tracks were made that way so you could use the new powersliding technique properly, and it was a huge step up in gameplay....Seesh did you ever use the powersliding?
third- they did not remove the go karts, they just made different style ones that correspond to the characters.

the new innovation in gameplay is that you control 2 characters...one drives and one uses powerups...
while changing them on the fly, you can get the difference in handling of the cart with the 2nd character and you can switch back and forth to use each of the characters 8 exclusive powerups... the strategy of this new gameplay innovation will make the game amazing...and tons more fun...AND it will require lots of thinking....making it far far far from being a game for kids.... i rest my case...MKGC will be so Amazing i am ready to fly to japan to buy their version... yes fly, not import...this game will be far and away the best GC period!

currently playing waverace blue storm, metroid prime, zeldaWW, nhl 2003, GTA vice city

Praising BigN for their innovation in a game you've never played is entirely different than saying a game sucks that you've never played. Geesh, BigN is taking a risk and doing something new with a series they could more easily have just completely rehashed. That deserves some recognition, whether its successful or not. Especially considering that in two weeks there will be threads up on this board about how Nintendo never does anything new or different.

Well, not knowing how the attacking system works, it'd be pretty lame if you NEED co-op or it's an option.  One person races and does no attacking -- that's not very kart-ish, and not nearly as much fun, while the other person only attacks, but is entirely dependent on how good the driver is.  And they need to talk constantly in order to coordinate attacks, so the driver doesn't suddenly turn.  And who would control switching?  The attacker?  The driver?

Regarding MK64, I thought it was a huge step up if only because it was more FUN.  Sure, the first one felt more like go-kart racing, but the second one was a lot more hectic and varied.  In the first one, the CPU karts always stayed in a line, followed the same course, and the order of characters was pretty much the exact same based on which character you selected.  Not to mention that battle mode BEGGED for more players and 3D.

And yay, analog stick steering!

People need to remember that "innovative" and "good" are not the same thing... yeah, maybe it's new and innovative, but is it good? We don't know. And the graphics look terrible.

People these days are really starting to bother me.

The graphics may not be the best on the GameCube, but they are not "terrible".  Terrible is Spy Hunter.  Go check it out.  The whole thing about graphics is really starting to grate on my nerves though.  Since when did it matter if the game had an almost indiscernably lower polygon count than another?  If the game is fun, just play it.

I really wish people would just stop bitching and go play some games for once.

In fact, I am going to go do that right now.

I wouldn't say the graphics are terrible but they're not great either.  They're like the bare minimum of graphics accepted in a first party Gamecube game.  Super Mario Sunshine had that as well.  It's like the artists asked themselves "now what's the least amount of effort I can put into these graphics?"  Look at something like Super Smash Bros Melee which shares several characters with the Mario games and compare the graphic quality.  SSB:M just blows Mario Sunshine and Mario Party 4 away.  There was more attention to detail put into SSB:M.  You could see stitches in Mario's pants and scales on Bowser's skin and although it was more detailed it didn't look out of place.  Nobody looked at Mario in SSB:M and complained that he didn't look right.

The best way to describe the graphics in Mario Kart is sufficient.  Everything is good enough for you to tell what everything is and nothing looks ugly but that's it.  It's the bare minimum.

Personally I think it's ridiculous that SSB:M which was practically a launch title still looks better than most of Nintendo's first party efforts.

Eggytoast, do not ask me how Nintendo will implement this attacker-driver system.  Just think about this:  Would you have a CPU control your attacker or driver or would have another person do so?  And remember, the reason they are doing this is not to make another rehash of perhaps their best multiplayer series.
Another thing, do not judge how fun something is until you have tried it out.

About the original Mario Kart being more accepted generally compared to Mario Kart 64...Mario Kart 64 is one of the top ten best-selling games in America since the 3-D generation began (N64 and PSX).  That says a whole lot.

They'd never let the system control either driving or attacking for a player's kart.

You control both characters.  Control stick for driving, C-stick for attacking.

It makes sense for them to add another character if they're going to do more with attacking.  It didnt' make much sense for a huge shell to just suddenly appear from in front of your kart.  And if they want to expand on the attacking idea by letting you attack in any direction, it only makes sense for them to include another character on the kart.

But they're certainly not going to let the CPU control attacking OR driving.  They gave you full control of it before; 2 characters doesn't mean they'll act separately.

And I think it'll be a blast that way.  I think it'd be awfully boring if I was stuck behind some lame-ass driver who couldn't even run over a powerup.

okay so alot of you are upset because they're not go karts anymore...
all i have to say is two things:

1: everyone doomed zelda WW when it was revealed it was cel shaded, and now look at it...

2: Miyamato is in his prime right now... every new idea he has recently is just amazing, so
I think once you get to play the game you might have a complete reversal in opinion...

Yep- Mario Kart has been the topselling Nintendo game on every console since it's release (well, at least the SNES and N64- not sure about the GBA), and I don't see any reason why it won't follow this trend on the Gamecube. Expect to see huge Gamecube sales spikes when it's released in both Japan and the US.

I'm really not sure how people are claiming they've gotten rid of karts.  Those are karts.  They may have customized shells and wheels, but underneath it all, they're still just go-karts.

actually mario kart was released in December of 1996, while the N64 released on Sept 1996

(goto Gamefaqs.com, goto systems, goto 64dd, goto the faq, the writer lists every game released on the N64 and provides the release date)

i just happened to see that earlier this evening so i thought I'd set things straight...
although I'm not positive he's correct, I remember the days of N64 and I clearly remember it not being a launch title.  in fact the N64 had two launch titles...hehehehehe!!! mario 64 and Pilot Wings 64

I can't help it but I have to complain about the graphics. Its just that they are quite bland and quite muddy looking, well in the texture department (nothing speaks hi-res in thos pics). I know what you guys are going to say, "Its not about graphics its all about the gameplay blah blah blah and such in such...". I don't care.

There is no doubt the gameplay is going to be there, cause if you think that Nintendo will all of a sudden forget about gameplay when graphics are put first...you should be shot where you stand.

Now with that being said; the problem that I have, Ninetendo should be able to combine the two rather than try to use this "we are focusing on gameplay rather graphics attitude". Like someone pointed out, look a SSB:M that game still impresses me to this very day...

Hey, look at F-Zero that game looks amazing...while moving at 60 fps with 30 cars on screen.

Why can't Nintendo just combine the two together...gameplay (its guaranteed, no complaints here) and graphics (something Nintendo needs to work on, everyone else seems to have a grasp on this)...

Wasn't this the reason the GC was built to do...bring gameplay and great graphics into one home.
