Honestly I don't think the majority of those should count. Maleficent is definitely not a remake of Sleeping Beauty. Haven't seen Cinderella but that's the only one besides the two I listed that should count.

It shouldn't, and yet it should. It started as part of this "live action refresh" initiative Disney started, but grew into its own thing. I believe Alice was in a similar boat.

Remember there was a promising Snow White that got canned during production. Maleficent was referred to along with Cinderella and failed Snow White back in the early 2010's.

To be fair, we also got 2 Snow White adaptations in the same year recently (IIRC). They probably thought the market was saturated.

On the subject of Maleficent, it totally counts. It IS a remake of the original Disney Sleeping Beauty movie. Maleficent and the Good Fairies have the same designs, and they even went out of their way to remake Aurora's original reveal scene where Maleficent put a curse on her.

Also, I nearly forgot about this but check out this rocking, brand new song they wrote for Maleficent!

Now, the movie does have its own focus and direction that makes it more than a remake, but that doesn't mean it's not a remake. The plot still follows Aurora growing up, pricking her finger, and falling into her traditional Sleeping trance. There are huge divergences from the original story, but there's too much of the original story still in there to not call it a remake.

Regarding the Alice films, I'm inclined to count the 1st one considering that its success is what led to Disney greenlighting all these live action remakes of their animated properties in the 1st place.

I just found out that there is a movie missing from the Disney Billions Poll up top.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is being released in Oct 2019

I was unaware of a sequel this year....
time to update the poll I guess.

edit: Looks like Disney just moved up the release date from May 2020 to Oct 2019 just a week or so ago.

I wonder if it had to do with clearing the way for something big in 2020....
Honestly, I think Disney doing too much in 1 year. Not sure how they gonna space out Fox properties as well.

missing: Penguins and honorable mention Spidah Man

I wouldn't bank on Maleficent 2 being a huge success. Just look at what happened with Alice 2.

But the Alice series was.... Unappealing visually and otherwise. The first did good, but I think the second just looked like more of the things you didn't really like about the first.

Maleficent I don't think we'll have that issue.
Not that it will be minting a Disney $Bill, but I think it'll do as expected for a movie moved up 7 months ahead of schedule

I say it's less of a remake is it is a story that takes place at the same time and has some of the same events and characters.

I liked the first one and thought the visuals were actually pretty neat. The 3D was good in it too (iirc).

But the second one just wasn't as good of a movie.  More things you didn't like from the first and some new things you also wouldn't like.

Also, the second Alice was around the time Depp was beginning to experience falling out due to his financial issues and other problems. A lot of the movies he is attached to have been struggling or panning in some fashion (Pirates 5, Alice 2, NotAHarryPotterPreqel 2).

I poached a portion of this image above, but since the updated version of it is even more on topic, decided to just post the entire pic now.

Why is there a red X on Artemis Fowl? Is it already expected to pan similar to Wrinkle in Time?

Yes.... but that's why I originally cropped the original pic to exclude the prejudicial treatment.
it's likely to flop though, but we'll see.
