Pokemon MMORPG in development and online NOW!!?
« on: March 02, 2007, 05:12:22 PM »
but not made by Nintendo

Pokemon Online.org

Fanmade MMORPG using the GBA assets for pokemon? how legal is this? not to mention you could join in right now and play too. All you have to i sfollow the link above or just click >HERE<
It appears to be in its early stages but it could shape up should it be around long enough to do so.

Is this what you guys wanted? I hope Nintendo recognizes the want for something like this and get to developing it themselves.

That is pretty interesting, and I haven't heard anything about it until now. You would think if it was officially legal, that you would hear more about it? I would think Nintendo would go after this, since they went after the homebrew of Zelda: OoT 2D. I didn't really look that much into it though, and haven't downloaded it to try.. but it could be an interesting idea.

I just hope that Nintendo does learn something from this though and work with more titles that are based on gameplay like this. It really couldn't hurt for Nintendo that much to try and experiment with different online games and styles. Can't say I'm interested in this Pokemon Online, simply because it's kind of underground and not made/published by Nintendo. If I hear good things about it though, I think I might try download it to try.

I think they'll nuke it when it's done or they are very close to releasing their own MMO. No need to annoy people by C&Ding fan projects when 99% of those fall apart before being finished because their team gets bored of it.

I agree, I don't think they'll pull the plug till they are ready to produce their own.  At that point they'll pull it.

On the flipside if this sort of project gets popular or at lease a good amount of press.  Then Nintendo would be hard pressed to ignore that their is a desire for a Pokemon MMORPG.

I don't think making their own is a requirement for nuking, they'll kill it shortly before it is complete, kinda like how S-E killed the Chrono Trigger Resurrection project shortly before completion.

I'm surprised S_B hasn't invaded this thread yet. He doesn't shut up when it comes to a Pokemon MMO :p . J/K...

I agree that the idea is awesome, but maybe the reason it hasn't been put into motion is because it would be too grand and too ambitious for Nintendo to handle? I mean, handling an MMO takes A LOT of work, effort, time and money and Nintendo lacks on many of these areas.

In other words, Nintendo has been having problems with the basic Wi-fi service. What makes you think they can handle a 24/7, real time, never ending MMO?

Nintendo has plenty of resources and TONS of cash to throw at an MMO, so don't make excuses for Nintendo's greed & laziness. Besides, didn't they team up with GameSpy or something, and aren't they supposed to specialize in online?

Nah, S_B has given up on MMOs for a while.

As for everything else, I am not making excuses. We all know that Nintendo is having a lot of problems with Online gaming right now. Even though we have some online DS games most of them are just basic options or are very limited in terms of options, Hunters perhaps being one of the better online games.

If they took the system they used for Hunters I guess they could pull it off. But like you said, Nintendo tends to be lazy when it comes to online games.

Unless Reggie is Regginating Nintendo HARD about online games as we speak...

Not really. It'd be a completely different game. The gameplay in Pokemon is all about strategy, which is turn based.

Couldnt there be an MMO where the actual fighting is turn based though? When I think of it as an MMO, I thinking it would be more like everyone playing their own seperate game, only everyone is on the same map/world. Everyone starts off with a Pokemon and have to quest around this world finding & collecting pokemon in the wild to add to their arsenal. If you run into another "quester" on your travels, you can challenge them and then take one of their(non-starter) pokemon as a prize(or whatever is agreed to before battle begins). the world map would be broken into continents, and each continent will have countries, each countries will have states and all states will have counties. Certain pokemon can only be found in certain areas, and new areas will only be accessable once you've earned enough badges to move on. Each county will have an Arena which is where you would earn our badges in the form of competition. Each competition will play out like the console versions of Pokemon and each Arena would have a champion. The ability to form teams, and champion many Dojo's/arena's and take on all comers.

I guess the goal would be to collect all the pokemon, train all the pokemon, defeat each Pokemon Dojo for a badge and to become Champion of every Arena(which is challengeable by any other player).

*I was gonna get really indepth wit what I would like to see in a Pokemon MMO, but thats not really what this thread is about, so I cut it short.*

The point I'm trying to get at is I don't see why it would really have to be a different game, just one that you aren't playing alone, and one where things can change whether you were online playing or not.

Well, Pokemon already has a world Just like that. Replace "Continents" with regions such as Kanto, Johto and Hoen. Each region has it's own set of pokemon and environments that are varied and have different types of pokemon. For instance you found Geodudes and Onix in cave, Diglets in tunnels and Clefairies were exclusive to Mt. Moon. The latter game built on this and even added (for G/S/C) a day/night cycle in real time to add to this.
The way I see a Pokemon MMO is that you get to pick which region you start at and can travel from town to town collecting the badges (in that region) at the gyms until you can move to another region. The only real problem is that Kanto and Johto have the same Pokemon League and Elite Four. Oh, and the whole leveling thing, but Nintendo can work that out.

Solve the problem of 12-year old bullies ganking 8-year old newbies and I'll be happy.

Solve the problem of online curses, name-calling, and foul language in a kid-oriented title and I'll be happy.

Solve the problem that Pokemon is AT ITS CORE PvP gameplay if you bring it online, and that a mass market MMO requires PvE experiences, and I'll be hoping you haven't completely obliterated the essence of Pokemon.

PVP flag, possibly even level difference limits.

Forming sentences from predefined pieces. Nothing else would work for this game since you have to "think of the children".

I don't know about you but I did fight loads of wild monsters in the GB game, whether to capture them or just to level my main. You'd have loads of wild monsters as PvE (possibly even using an encounter rule like the GB ones).

But of course I think Pokemon should be a MMO. We had the idea that it should be a MMO back in the beginning of the GC's life. Mike even made a fake poster advertising for it (which was awesome, by the way).

If there is a MMO in existence capable of dethroning WoW, it's Pokemon Online. Even if you didn't let the players chat with each other unless they swapped friend codes, just trouncing random opponents would be a thrill.

You can harass people without entering combat. You can keep challenging them, you can call them names... the hardest thing for a kid to do is stay calm when insulted. Especially in a community/MMO setting.

What SELF-RESPECTING gamer above 12 would SUBMIT to such a thing??? I'd rather have NO CHAT than chat that was chopped off at the knees, dressed in a pink fluffy dress and had a LOBOTOMY. Pokemon is played by MORE PEOPLE than have BASIC READING SKILLS you know?!?!?!

You don't take Pokemon into the MMORPG world by dumbing it down and insulting its older fanbase. That COMPLETELY defeats the purpose.

That's what the handy dandy "report abuse" feature is for.  You can also /ignore them, and I remember from World of Warcraft that if someone kept challenging me to a duel, I could simply never answer the request.  The notification is easy enough to ignore in towns, where it's most likely to happen.  I just let it time out on its own, and they couldn't keep making it pop up over and over again if I never closed it.

Actually, considering that we're talking about a game on either DS or Wii, sentence construction from predefined phrases would probably speed things up considerably.  If I had the option, I'd use it over a hunt-and-click on screen keyboard in almost every case.  It's not like there's a difference in the level of reading comprehension required to use one over the other, anyway.  I don't know where you're getting that idea.

As an added benefit, such a system would break down language barriers, allowing everyone in the world to play together.

I just say voice chat with friend codes, no friend code = preformed sentences, which can't include "Where do you live?" and "My phone number is ________."

Kairon: Freeform chat would make everyone afraid of pedobear going 'round in the game. Harrassing through challenges would depend on how the PvP flag was implemented. There's more possible griefer behaviour but you can't make an MMO griefer-proof, you can only ban the griefers.

... I am REALLY against the Pokemon MMO idea. It would distort the game in MORE WAYS THAN ONE, in more directions than the ones I've listed... and besides, no one in Nintendo knows how to do MMOs TO BEGIN WITH.

You have a brand, sure, but you've got NO EXPERTISE, NO VISION, and are COMPLETELY DERIVATIVE OF OTHER GAMES!!! BLARGH! KAIRON SMASH~! SMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

At one time, no one at Nintendo knew how to make video games to begin with.  At one time, no one there knew how to make side-scrolling platformers.  At one time, no one there knew how to make 3D games.

But I'm sure that this time they'd fail terribly, and you'd get to gloat and SMASH and somehow feel good about it.

On the other hand, I'd be interested in seeing what Nintendo's unique expertise and vision would bring to the world of MMO games.
