Did you freak out when Mario learned how to throw a punch in Super Mario 64?

he 'learned' to punch in Mario RPG technically, in fact he had a mean uppercut in that game.

Good find, Airraid!

Although to be honest, I don't have the type of eye to notice the speed of the game, especially with a low res trailer like this one.

Watch the near-last fight scene on the Pit stage. Notice how slowly Snake seems to move through the air?

I, for one, will not be happy if Brawl's pushed back to next Christmas. Not only did they say it would be a launch title, but c'mon, where's the justification? Don't get me wrong, I love Smash Bros. But this series is the poster child of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" motto. Melee was basically Smash Bros. 64 with a slightly upgraded engine, and Brawl is looking to be Melee with a slightly upgraded engine and a few bells and whistles. They've been, pretty much, working with the same engine for the same game for the past three games. Quite frankly, they should have it down to a science by this point, because the game really hasn't changed much.

I could understand if there were some TOTALLY AWESOME series of new features so cool it made me jizz myself, but so far it's just looking to be more of the same. Now, that isn't a bad thing, because Smash Bros. is a damn good series, but it's no justification for pushing the game back more than a year.

Either make the delay worth it, or quite jerkin' me around and give me my damn Smash Bros. fix, Nintendo!!

Could it be just that some of the new characters aren't as quick as the old? Mario's combo at the start looks to be about on par with the speed in Melee, while Pit looks to be a very quick fighter as well. Pikachu looks like he might be a tad slower, for whatever reason, but it's hard to tell in the trailer. Link looks to be about the same speed, but then he never was all that quick.

Either way, doesn't look like anything major. I love the trailer though, not quite the hype machine that the first was, but I will be watching this one over and over again for sure (love Snake's rocket launcher).

It's a fighting game... these things don't balance and play test themselves. Any extra time they are given to make sure everything is perfect, and to add either more levels or characters, is more than fine with me.

Oh, I'm sure. But my point is since they're really not changing all that much about the series with this new installment, and they're basically working the same development tools and engine from Melee, I don't see them doing anything that could possibly push the game back THAT far. It's basically going to play like Melee, all they're doing is polishing the smudges from Melee and adding a smidget of updates.

I'm sure there's more involved than I know, but I just don't see anything added to this game that's making me go "Oh, THAT'S why they're pushing it back over a year." This game just looks like Melee pt. 2. So if they push it back any farther than March, I might be a little pissed.

I couldn't notice speed being slower or faster.

I do remember in one of the interviews, it was talked about slowing the game down some.

I think this would be a good idea.  The game looks fantastic...the best part is how alive all the backgrounds to the levels look.  I feel apart of something massive.  I also am curious about Yoshi's Island level...it hinted at a huge change occurring in the battle...I dunno what it will be but it seemed cool.

You could also  see a deeper combo system already being implemented.  Air Combos appeared to be easier and logical...and other combos seemed to be present as well.

I'm sure Nintendo wasn't thinking straight when they promised SSB Brawl for launch. I mean, they made the promise AND they hired the director on the same day. I wouldn't be surprised if Hal convinced them that they wouldn't be able to create SSB Brawl for the launch in under a year and they needed the time to polish the game.

Like I mentioned, online will play a role in the game. They already mentioned that they were having difficulty balancing the game and creating it for 4 players. These things take TIME to polish and balance.

Also, the Wii has more than one killer APP in the horizon, meaning that there isn't the urgency of SSB Brawl being released like there was when Melee was first announced. Which means that they have the time to polish this game.

Didn't you notice that Melee seemed rushed? Missing levels, awkward animation, balancing issues. Hal is aiming to make sure that Brawl feels like a complete game and then some.

Remember, Pittboi, a good game is eventually released but a bad game remains a bad game forever.

It's good to have someone like Pittbboi, who's so well-versed in the process of game development.  What would we do without him?

I understand that you'd like to have it sooner, but I'd rather have it better, and that takes more time.  Nintendo has already said that it won't be here till 2007 (I think they maybe said summer at the earliest), so just hunker down and wait.  Metroid and Zelda and Excitetruck and Mario Galaxy and Red Steel should maybe keep you busy for a little while.

I dunno.

On one hand – the more polished the game, the better. And polishing takes time. I can definitely agree with that.

But on the other hand – It’s not like they’re starting with a new engine and coding from the ground up. They’re basically re-using the Melee engine and making it shinier. I fail to see how that takes an extra year of work.  Sure, Melee had its issues, but those issues were VERY minor and didn’t stop SSBM from being one of the best—if not THE best—multiplayer games on the Cube. That engine, even with its flaws, got closer to perfect than most games did last gen. I don’t see them needing to do too much to make it better, especially since they’re not really adding much in the way of new features and mechanics.

But, eh, this is just a Nintendo fan whining. I’ll wait if I have to but, damnit, having to wait sucks.  Brawl is really the only game I’m excited about.  Yeah, I’ll be picking up Zelda come launch, but that’s not special--it’s about f’ing time and EVERYONE will be picking up Zelda at launch.  But nothing warms my blood like the promise of a good Smash Bros. game and years of multiplayer goodness.

Dude, they are doing MORE than just using the Melee engine and making it shinier...

1. They have to UPDATE the new characters in order to reflect the change done to the engine
2. They have to select new characters, create movesets and balance them for the gameplay
3. They need to decided which characters go in and which go out
4. They have to create and develop the fighting stages
5. They to work with the ONLINE MODE
6. They need to test it out and see if its balanced and polished
7. They need to record voices and music for the game
8. They need to program how the items are used in the game

Sakurai himself has said that they are working the bugs out of the engine and updating it.

Erase that idea of yours that just because an engine is created it means that the developing will go faster. True, there have been games that have been released rather quickly because the engine is already written, but just because some developers will take the easy way out it doesn't mean that ALL developers do the same.

Developing a game takes a long time. It isn't as easy as we think it is. This is the reality behind SSB Brawl. They want to make it the best SSB game possible and make it shine on the Wii. And we are not making it easier by rushing them. This won't be a Duke Nukem forever situation. The game will NOT disappear because it takes a while to release.

I know they're doing more than just making it shinier, I said that in my other post. I'm just skeptical. Like I said, I'll wait if I have to. I dunno, I guess part of me wants to see them include something in the game that's going to make me go, "SWEET! Alright, take 1, hell, 2 years if you have to!" but so far it just looks like Melee pt. 2. Which, again, is fine. I'm just not going to go nuts because there's online, because frankly, they're late.

Technically, 'selecting Zero Suit Samus from the menu' could count as a certain curcumstance.

I thought the trailer was alright. Honestly, I just wanted to see a one on one match go down with new items. I wanted to see two masters of the game play each other while we watch in awe. That would have built up hype.

I'm with requiem it was Ok but doesn't seem all that much different from Melee which wasn't all that much different from Smash Brothers on N64. Don't get me wrong, the series is alot of fun, but I think it is a tad bit overrated.

Just kidding, ssup vudu.

I'm wondering about the two different Greek/Roman stages shown. Clearly the Athena statue one with the crumbling platforms is Pit's. Whose is the other one with the Atlas statue though?

Zero Suit Samus is my new favorite fighter.

Right now I'm wondering if the cyborg from Project HAMMER will be a playable character. Would be a great way to introduce him; also, the Atlas stage makes me think of that game for some reason. Something about the mood and lighting.

I heard a rumor that the Prince of Persia will be a hidden character in Brawl; he's going to have lots of spoken dialog throughout the match and there won't be any subtitles.

I like how people complain when a game comes out too soon, then whine that the sequel "is just a prettier version, so why isn't it coming out sooner?"

You can't call SSBM rushed and then expect Brawl to be finished quickly.  I understand it was to be a launch title, but frankly, Zelda is a big enough game to hold me over for a while.  And I'm thinking the level of multiplayer capability inherent in some games will be distraction as well.  As much as I'd love to thrown down online on day one in my one of my favorite game series ever, I can afford to wait a while.

As for the trailer, the animation was pretty terrible.  I hope that's an after-effect of it being an online movie, since those hardly ever give a 100% indication of seeing something first hand.  Wario looks amazingly funny but there were whole animation sequences missing.

The only reason I bring this up is because the animation in SSBM was amazing.  Go put it in half speed practice mode.  All the characters have an insane amount of animation frames, including facial animations and different reactions to a lot of things.

This is the heart of what makes SSBM so great - virtually anything can happen in a battle, but it all makes sense.  It's not like other fighting games where when a specific move is done, certain frames HAVE to play out.  SSBM wrecks that by making it so volatile.  You'll be in an attack and something flies out of nowhere and knocks you out, but it all makes total sense.

I like Fox's stance as well.  Makes much more sense fighting wise - his old one looks strangle archaic as of 5 minutes ago (when I watched this).

As for the speed, don't slow it down too much.  Some of us liked the game that fast.  I don't want every last person wave dashing in the new one (assuming that will remain) because enough people complained about how they couldn't handle it.
I must find a way to use "burninate" more in my daily speech.

I think people point out Wario as being animated poorly.  But they are trying to achieve something odd with him.  He isn't supposed to be smoothly animated...they wanted him to look un-natural and odd, and I think they did a great job of that.

At it also helps his animations look more humourous...for some reason.
